7 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS To prevent physical injury, all personnel directly or indirectly involved with the maintenance of the car have to follow the safety rules listed below when servicing the equipment: (1) Observe all NJ Transit safety rules and regulations. (2) Make sure the area is well ventilated when working with materials that produce dangerous fumes. Wear protective gear when handling materials that are injurious to the skin or eyes. (3) To avoid flying debris, take the appropriate precautions when using compressed air for cleaning purposes. (4) Where fasteners removed from the car equipment are not satisfactory for reuse, care must be taken to select replacements that match the originals. Mismatched or incorrect fasteners can result in equipment damage or malfunction, or, possibly, personal injury. (5) Follow all S, CAUTIONS, and NOTES found throughout this manual. If you must use a work procedure or tool that is not covered in this manual, you must first satisfy yourself that neither your safety nor that of the equipment is jeopardized by the method selected. (6) Shut off car power whenever continuity is to be checked or when handling equipment connections. (7) Make sure that the equipment cannot be started automatically or accidentally. If valves are closed and/or circuits interrupted during service procedures, the control switches should be suitably tagged. (8) Dangerous voltages are present throughout the car. Always exercise extreme care when working in close proximity to electrically energized apparatus or when making current measurements. Observe the proper polarities (positive to positive and negative to negative) when connections are made to avoid risk of personal injury or damage that may result from improper current flow. (9) Personal protective equipment is to be used in accordance with railroad regulations. As required by the maintenance or operational situation, take particular note of the following: PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN THE MAINTENANCE OF THE CAR MUST OBSERVE ALL NJ TRANSIT OPERATING RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS APPLICABLE TO THE OPERATION OF HIGH-VOLTAGE EQUIPMENT. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, LOSS OF LIFE, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. BEFORE MAKING ANY POWER JUMPER CONNECTION, VERIFY THAT POWER HAS BEEN CUT OFF IN THE CARS OR AT THE SHOP/WAYSIDE SUPPLY. HANDLE ALL JUMPERS WITH CARE AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH NJ TRANSIT OPERATING RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, LOSS OF LIFE, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. HIGH VOLTAGES ARE PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE CONSIST. ALWAYS EXERCISE EXTREME CARE WHEN WORKING NEAR ELECTRICALLY CHARGED APPARATUS. 8 FOR THE PROTECTION OF ALL PERSONNEL AROUND OR UNDER CONSIST, ENSURE THE PARKING BRAKES ARE APPLIED OR THAT THE WHEELS ARE CHOCKED. IN THE CASE OF MADE-UP TRAINS, ENSURE THE CAR CREW IS AWARE OF PERSONNEL MOVEMENT. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, LOSS OF LIFE, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. WHEN MAKING UP CONSISTS, MAKE SURE ALL PERSONNEL ARE CLEAR OF CARS PRIOR TO MOVEMENT. ALL BLUE SIGNAL PROTECTION AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, LOSS OF LIFE, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. CLEANING SOLVENTS ARE FLAMMABLE AND PRODUCE HARMFUL FUMES. USE SOLVENT ONLY IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. AVOID PROLONGED BREATHING OF SOLVENT VAPORS. KEEP SOLVENT AWAY FROM FLAME. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, OR LOSS OF LIFE. LUBRICANTS MAY BE FLAMMABLE AND PRODUCE HARMFUL FUMES. AVOID PROLONGED BREATHING OF LUBRICANT VAPORS. KEEP LUBRICANT AWAY FROM FLAME. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN INJURY, OR LOSS OF LIFE. RESIDUAL AIR PRESSURE MAY BE PRESENT IN PNEUMATIC SYSTEMS AFTER AIR SUPPLY IS CUTOUT. EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN DISCONNECTING OR REMOVING COMPONENTS.
