4 H O S E S A N D A C C E S S O R I E S Explanation of the symbols used in this publication FDA - FOOD & DRUG Administration The FDA sets the minimum requirements for the rubber compounds that are used in our hoses in order to ensure that foodstuffs, human and veterinary medicines, biological and medical products can be handled in a safe and efficient manner. The FDA also ensures that the user can be addressed in an honest, accurate and very informative manner about these basic products in these compounds. CFR specifies the relevant requirements for rubber articles that are intended for repeated use. These requirements contain a list of the ingredients that may be used for FDA approved rubber compounds. This list contains the types of rubber, accelerators, plastifiers and fillers,... which may be used in the various compounds. Certain ingredients also have quantitive limits on how much may appear in compounds. The FDA does not actually certify products according to CFR It is always the task of the product supplier to guarantee that the goods supplied comply with the FDA requirements. USP - United States Pharmacopoeia USP class VI standards are controlled by the USP, a non-governmental organisation in the USA that strives to improve public health by disseminating clear specifications to the medical and pharmaceutical bodies and their subsidiaries. USP class VI rubber compounds must be subjected to various test phases; if they fail just one of the tests, the compound does not qualify for USP class VI approval. These approvals contain tests for: Cytotoxicity Hemolysis Pyrogenicity sensitisation ADI Mad cow disease can lead to fatalities caused by Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) where the consumption of BSE infected animals (mad cow disease) is the cause. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy literally turns the brains into a sponge full of holes: behavioural and motor disorders, nervousness and aggression are the result of the misfolding of a normal protein into an abnormal protein or prion, that eats away the brain cells. BSE can have an incubation period from 2 to 18 years. The disease will over the course of a few weeks lead to death. These prions are very resistant and steam at 133 C, 3 bar for 20 minutes is necessary in order to destroy them. This treatment is necessary to prevent the introduction of BSE prions at sites for the food, drink and pharmaceutical industry. Stearates, fatty acids or similar products can originate from agriculture or animal processing production. ERIKS has inspected its rubber hoses for the use of ingredients originating from animals in order to avoid the risk of BSE prion contamination. These qualities are certified with the ADI-free logo (Animal Derived Ingredients free). Approved for the transport of flammable powders How does static electricity occur? Static electricity occurs by friction of two elements. These elements can be liquids, gasses, vapours or solid elements. At least one of the elements needs good conductive capabilities. Friction can occur through: 1. The rubbing of two surfaces together. 2. Falling of drops or fixed particles. 3. Spraying. 4

5 R U B B E R H O S E S The level of electrostatic charging depends on three factors: 1. The speed of the friction of the elements. 2. The humidity of the environment or if in a dry environment a discharge will occur faster if the environment has high moisture content. 3. The conductivity & electrical resistance of the elements. How dangerous is static discharge? The energy required that increases the risk of some products combusting can be very low. If sparks occur due to static electricity, these sparks can ignite flammable products. These sparks are not always visible to the naked eye! Static charging of materials is often very difficult to avoid. The risk can be reduced or prevented by keeping the electrical charge as low as possible by simply discharging the static electricity through the hose in a controlled method. For example: - a suction and discharge hose used on trucks always needs a connection with an earth cable and an approved earthing point. This is of the utmost importance because static electricity occurs in several places on the vehicle and must be discharged immediately. Therefore the suction and discharge hoses have to be conductive or antistatic at all times. It is also important to reduce the suction speed. The level of static build up created through a hose highly depends on the velocity of the medium that rubs against the hose or the tank liner. Accidents caused by static electricity Static Electricity is extremely dangerous and one of the main causes of industrial fires and explosions. Some of the most common factors linked to static related industrial accidents are: The increase in process or production speed The increased usage of more finer powders and granulates The trend to use more purified fuels The increased concentration of potentially explosive and flammable solvents, gasses and fine powders in the atmosphere. The internal diameters of RX chemical hoses are suitable for the common commercially available connections. ERIKS supplies a complete range of hose connections. A complete range of hose clamps, bushes and compression sleeves are included in our catalogue. This enables us to assemble your hose with connections in the way you require. A modern workshop with pressure equipment is available for carrying out this work expertly. Once the hose is assembled it can be tested if required. This pressure testing is performed in accordance with the procedure described in EN You will receive a test report from us with all the relevant data including a unique number that is also marked on the hose assembly. If, for example, you want the hose supplied under the supervision of Lloyds or AIB-Vincotte this is possible. Note The life of a hose is heavily dependent on the chemical properties and the temperature of the medium that flows through it. Above all, the flow speed and the duration of exposure play a role. For special applications or extreme cleaning methods it is necessary to know the specific working conditions in order to be able to determine what type of hose must be used. Chemical standard according to EN In 1989 a new operating standard for rubber and thermoplastic hoses was drafted by a number of users in cooperation with a few manufacturers. The goal was to draw up a truly usable standard for the first time and to give these hoses an easily identifiable and standardised marking. This standard specifies, among other things, the quality of the internal rubber, but also the working pressure and the of curvature. This standard can be obtained from the standards institute. 7

Connections specifically suited for the food industry require a hygienic, bacteria-free passage from the interior hose wall to the connection. The internal diameters of ERIKS RX hoses are suitable for the common commercially available connections. ERIKS supplies the complete range. You can obtain the hose connections handbook on request. Construction ERIKS RX feed hoses are manufactured on a smooth spindle and therefore have a very regular internal and outside diameter. Characteristic of this method are the very fine tolerances and a greater adhesion between the various components of the hose. The interior wall is extruded and is smooth, regular and homogeneous. This guarantees its optimal flow characteristics. All hoses are reinforced with solid inlays inserted at a special angle. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy literally turns the brains into a sponge full of holes: behavioural and motor disorders, nervousness and aggression are the result of the misfolding of a normal protein into an abnormal protein or prion that eats away the brain cells. BSE can have an incubation period from 2 to 18 years. The disease leads to death in the course of a few weeks. These prions are very resistant and steam is needed at 133 C, 3 bar for 20 minutes to destroy them. This treatment is necessary to prevent the introduction of BSE prions at sites for the food, drink and pharmaceutical industry. Stearates, fatty acids or similar products can originate from agriculture or animal processing production. ERIKS has inspected its rubber hoses for the use of ingredients originating from animals in order to avoid the risk of BSE prion contamination. These qualities are certified with the ADI free logo (Animal Derived Ingredients free). Cleaning The smooth internal wall of all ERIKS RX hoses prevents the adhesion of media. Characteristic of this method are the very fine tolerances and a greater adhesion between the various components of the hose. The interior wall is extruded and is smooth, regular and homogeneous. This guarantees its optimal flow characteristics. All hoses are reinforced with solid inlays inserted at a special angle. This guarantees a high degree of flexibility, rigidity and pressure resistance. The outside wall is durable, age resistant and has a high level of resistance to the media found in various areas of application. Markings Characteristic of the Contitech hoses are the various coloured identification and relief stripes for identification of the various types. This simplifies identification and prevents incorrect use. Cleaning The smooth internal wall of all Contitech hoses prevents the adhesion of media. This simplifies the cleaning process and reduces costs. The internal wall is resistant to cleaning with hot water and common cleaning agents (see the list on the next page). Bend Each hose has a specific minimum bend that must not be exceeded. Bending too tightly can lead to a break or leak. Such damage can be prevented by supporting or guiding the hose. The details for bends vary: they depend on, among other things, the internal diameter, the wall thickness, the construction of the inlays and the materials used. The bends specified in this documentation are for a filled hose at working pressure. Hose connection and assembly Aggressive and environmentally hazardous media demand careful assembly of the hose connections. The internal diameters of Contitech hoses are suitable for the common commercially available connections. We can also expertly assemble your hoses if you wish, in our own workshops, with a pressure test report. We can also carry out annual hose re-testing at your location. Note The life of a hose is heavily dependent on the chemical properties and the temperature of the medium that flows through it. Above all, the flow speed and the duration of exposure play a role. For special applications or extreme cleaning methods it is necessary to know the specific operating conditions in order to be able to determine what type of hose must be used. The gaseous state called steam can also be subdivided into three different forms, which are determined by the pressure and temperature. These three forms are: Wet saturated steam or wet steam Dry saturated steam Superheated steam or dry steam The following steam diagram is given for clarification. The thick black line shows the boiling point of water at the different pressures. Each point on this line represents saturated steam. Saturated steam can be released as un-evaporated water particles. Saturated steam can therefore be dry or wet. Each point below the line (zone A) represents warm water, each point above the line (zone B) represents superheated steam. If a hose is pressurised to 10.5 bar at a temperature of 186 C, saturated steam is present. When the pressure is reduced (e.g. as a result of a volume expansion) or when there is a temperature increase, superheated steam is created. The steam therefore follows the dotted line to point X. Rubber steam hoses are suitable for saturated steam. Using rubber hoses for superheated steam is not desirable. This will significantly reduce the life because the rubber of the hose ages quickly. After use, the hose must be drained so that any remaining water particles are removed. If not, the water particles will be absorbed through the internal wall and when the hose is used again these water particles will be converted back into steam. Because of the increase in volume, blisters will appear in the internal wall and the hose will no longer be fit for use. This is called the popcorn effect. How do you choose the right steam hose? Determine the required internal diameter. The diameter is normally determined by the dimensions of the pipe connection to which the hose assembly must be connected. It is important not to choose an internal diameter larger than the diameter of the feed pipe. This would cause the pressure in the hose always to be greater than in the pipeline. Determine the working pressure and temperature. Determine the state of the steam. The steam diagram indicates, from the combination of the working pressure and temperature, whether the steam is saturated or superheated. Choose the right hose and connections? Choose a hose and connections that meet the required parameters. Make allowance for the form of the steam as well as the pressure and temperature. Determine the required. The is determined by the application. We recommend you take the bend into account. In case of a permanent installation we recommend you install the hose so that it is easy to drain. Determine whether the hose must be tested. We can test hoses for you in accordance with the current standards. 42
