2 AUT I. CATALOG DESCRIPTION A. Prerequisite: Auto Collision: Paint I B. 3 semester hours credit C. Students will learn refinishing safety and environmental regulations, automotive paints, and paint application equipment. II. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES/ASSESSMENT MEASURE Students will use and maintain air preparation and breathing air systems. Students will utilize product sheets to determine compatible surfaces and surface preparation, mixing ratios, and dry time. Students will utilize personal safety equipment for mixing paint, hardeners, and reducers according to manufacturers product sheets. Students will utilize Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and interpret MSDS codes. Students will identify types of hazardous wastes in a collision repair facility, follow regulations for storage and disposal of hazardous waste, and practice response to a hazardous materials emergency. Students will examine differences in gravity and siphon feed spray guns and the type of compressed air required for refinishing, Students will describe the difference between drying and curing, the types of refinishing materials, mixing ratios, and equipment for mixing. Identify Dynamic and Positive Displacement compressors. B. Identify Reciprocating, Rotary Screw, and Centrifugal compressors. C. Identify oil lubricated and oil free compressors. D. Know the advantages and disadvantages of each type of compressor. E. Describe basic maintenance for each type of compressor.
3 F. Describe the safety precautions when working with compressed air systems. G. Know the terms CFM, SCFM, ACFM, and ICFM. H. Describe the five steps for proper sizing of an air compressor to a shop. B. Air Preparation Systems A. Describe the five important steps to and air system layout. B. Describe the operation of a refrigerated air drier system. C. Describe the importance of automatic and manual water drains in the system. D. Describe how a coalescing filter functions. E. Identify the different types of filters in the air supply system. F. Describe the proper use of desiccant in the air supply system. G. Describe the proper operation and maintenance of pressure regulators. H. Describe where a lubricator can be used in an air preparation system C. Breathing Air Systems A. Identify the 3 basic types of breathing air systems. B. Describe the types of air compressors used in each system. C. Know the proper types of air hoses and fittings used for each system. D. Develop a filter change schedule for each system. Basic Mixing A. Product Sheets (P Sheets) A. Using the P sheet determine the compatible surfaces and surface preparation. B. Using the P sheet determine the appropriate reducer according to air temperature. C. Determine proper mixing ratios. D. Determine dry times. E. Using a P sheet for a top coat determine polish information, repair information. B. Body Fillers A. Identify the equipment needed to perform body filler mixing. B. Properly mix non-flexible and flexible polyester base body fillers. C. Understand how different mix ratios affect cure times. D. Identify the personal safety equipment needed to mix body fillers. E. Understand proper clean-up and disposal of waste adhesives. C. Adhesives A. Epoxy Adhesives 1. Identify the equipment needed to mix Epoxy adhesives. 2. According to manufacturer s directions mix Epoxy adhesives. 3. Monitor cure times according to ambient temperature.
4 4. Identify the personal safety equipment needed to mix epoxy. B. Two Part Adhesives 1. Identify the equipment needed to properly mix two part adhesives containing isocynates. 2. Identify the proper safety equipment needed to mix two part adhesives containing isocynates. 3. Understand proper clean-up and disposal of waste adhesives. Paint A. Identify the proper equipment needed to prepare paint for use in the paint gun. B. Identify the personal safety equipment for mixing paint, hardeners and reducers. C. Using the manufacturer s product sheet (P sheet) add hardener and reducer to primer and sealer paint at the proper ratios. D. Using the manufacturer s product sheet add reducers to base coat paint at the proper ratios. E. Using the manufacturer s P sheet add hardener and reducer to clear coat paint at the proper ratios. Hazardous Materials, Personal Safety and Refinish Safety A. Material Safety Data Sheets A. Explain why hazardous material regulations were developed. B. Explain information contained in a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). C. Interpret MSDS code information. D. Explain the different sections of a product MSDS. B. Labels A. Identify different characters and methods of label warnings. B. Know the difference between supplier, workplace, and other means of identification labels. C. Know the requirements for a workplace label. C. Hazardous Materials A. Identify acute and chronic chemical exposure. B. Know the different routes of hazardous chemical entry into the body. C. List the different hazardous chemical categories and where the hazards are located in the collision repair facility. D. Locate and define OSHA maximum permissible chemical exposure limits.
5 D. Personal Protective Equipment A. Define and use the different personal protective equipment recommended for different tasks in a collision repair facility. B. Know and properly use the three types of supplied air respirator systems. C. Inspect and properly maintain supplied air systems. D. Define United States and Canadian respirator requirements. E. Test-Fit and properly maintain respirators. E. Repair Facility Safety A. Use the different repair facility safety practices when working with glass, engines, batteries, fuel, and welding equipment. B. Know proper response to a hazardous materials emergency. C. Identify supplier, employer, and employee responsibilities in a hazardous material training program. F. Hazardous Wastes A. Understand the different types of hazardous wastes in a collision repair facility. B. Understand the different regulations for how to handle hazardous waste. C. Know the storage and disposal requirements for hazardous waste. Refinishing A. Spray Guns A. Describe the difference between gravity and siphon feed spray guns. B. Describe what the fan adjustment controls. C. Describe the reason for using coated or plastic material cups. D. Describe how to correct improper spray patterns. B. Compressed Air A. Describe the type of compressed air that is required for refinishing. B. Describe the grade of breathing air required for fresh air breathing. C. Explain the importance of using different air hose connectors for tools versus a breathing apparatus. C. Spray Environment A. Describe the tree types of spray booths currently in use. B. Describe negative and positive pressure within a spray booth. C. Describe the difference between drying and curing. D. VOC Rules and Regulations A.
