2 NNSY Digital Drydocks Problem: Shipyards have asked for help in tracking scaffolding/temporary services, establishing optimum docking block set up, Connex box locations, material lay down, scaffolding, and vehicle circulation lanes in the drydock. Shipyards have also requested scans of caissons, caisson tanks, and pumpwells to aid with training of apprentices. Solution: NSWCPD performed a pilot project at NNSY in FY15 to demonstrate the technology application of laser scanning the drydock and pier areas. Estimated savings of $100k are achieved by eliminating the man hours required to traditionally survey each dock. An additional cost avoidance of $200k per availability is estimated through improved planning for the location of the temporary services. Scanning of caissons, tanks, and pumpwells will allow for preplanning of repairs and replacements of machinery. The data will help familiarize the apprentices more quickly with their environment and accelerate training. 3 Equipment Routing Problem: Identifying an installation path for equipment to be installed without colliding with another object Work Completed: Large volume scanning of two areas where equipment will be installed Scans has been aligned and post processed to remove excess data and noise A model of the motor being installed has been created for provided dimensions Virtual equipment path has been created and determined to be successful using unconfirmed dimensions Transport model for motor has been modified using updated dimensions Models of future installation path obstacles have been created Solution: Test and analyze the installation path virtually using models and data captured from 3D scanners. Using these tools it is possible to detect all possible collisions and determine the most optimal path to install the equipment.

6 Obsolescence Mitigation Problem: Water closets on various ships were failing and with the manufacturer no longer in business, drawings were needed to create a technical data package. Solution: To create a drawing, the water closet was molded, scanned, and then modelled. Drawings were then created from the modelled data.
