1 P.O. Box 112 Orangevale, CA Official Newsletter of the Dolphin Divers of Sacramento NOVEMBER 2017 President s Message In This Issue Hello fellow Dolphin Divers! What a great presenter that our Activities Chair, Ilkan was able to arrange for our last meeting. Anna Neumann, the Northern California Regional Manager for Reef Check, drove all the way to Sacramento from Fort Bragg to share the great work that Reef Check is doing to protect the natural resources of California coast. Reef Check trains recreational divers like us to help volunteer to survey the health of coral reef and rocky reef eco systems. Message from the President On Deck: Holidays with Dolphin Divers Upcoming Events A Little Something Extra Events These results help insure the long-term sustainability and health of the nearshore rocky reefs and kelp forest. If you were not able to attend the meeting, you can learn more about this presentation at If there is enough interest in becoming a volunteer, Anna would be willing to come back to Sacramento and provide the training. Make sure to join us at the November 15th meeting and bring your best photos to submit in the Photo Contest!! Also, make sure you vote for Member of the Year! I personally can t wait to see this year s selection. The photos taken by our members tell a story of how much fun this club has and about the relationships formed by its members. 2 DOLPHIN DIVERS GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS CHEERS! As the year comes to a close, Dolphin Divers of Sacramento spends a night honoring our successes, celebrating the memories we make together, and collectively sharing in the joy that our dolphin family brings to one another. This page is dedicated to the years past, with much hope for the 2017 party to be just as memorable. Sidebar Subtitle DON T FORGET CONTESTS! 3 A NOTE FROM YOUR SAFETY OFFICER: November Safety Officer's Message by Dana Carlson Ok, so I'd like to discuss something non-sexy this month. Tank maintenance. Seriously overlooked and underrated in the regular maintenance department, your tank is (duh), pretty important. Regardless what KIND of tank you use (Aluminum, Steel, High Pressure or Low, Oxygen, Tri-mix or AIR), your tank requires an ANNUAL VISUAL INSPECTION. Every five years it requires a Hydrostatic Test. Your tank is exposed to more than we give it credit. Endless hours in the sun, or cold, in your garage or banging around in the back of your car. These are just the surface considerations. Your scuba cylinder was designed to withstand the atmospheric pressure changes when you're diving underwater. Lets face it, tanks get man-handled. Our gear is designed to be hearty, but we rarely give the kind of maintenance attention to our tanks that we do our regulators or masks, or wetsuits or camera gear. But think about it, that tank is at the center of what makes us able to utilize all those other pieces of gear. I bet you wouldn't even use any of your other gear if you didn't have a well-maintained, reliable tank to attach it to (ab divers excluded). So, in closing, I recommend you rinse your tank just as you would any other piece of equipment after diving. I usually let mine soak for a while in the water tank after my normal scuba cleansing rinse. For goodness sake, please have your tank(s) visually inspected annually (shops won't fill em unless they're within vis/ hydro certification dates), and be sure to laugh to yourself when you come across that tank that needs to be Hydro'd AGAIN, cause time really does fly. Give your tank the respect it deserves. Maintaining your equipment is maintaining your life! **As a bonus, for the month of NOVEMBER, DDS members, will receive ONE STORM MESH NET (tank net), per person when they have a visual inspection or hydrostatic check performed at Dolphin Scuba Center. Also, if you haven't already seen it, go check out the new POOL REMODEL at Dolphin Scuba, it looks awesome, and is a major improvement to the Dolphin Center. Hey buddy, nice tank!

4 SOMETHING EXTRA Who s Got Photog Skills? This gal here Local dive-guru and fellow Dolphin Diver, Britannia Junes, can be seen teaching classes, working her tail off, and globetrotting this little planet we ve got. Now, she can add the title of Published Artist to her repertoire. See the November 2017 California Diving News Magazine to sneak a peek at her work, where she used an Olympus tg-5 and Gobe 700 spot light to catch the incredible images. I know this may be hard to believe, but I used to hate holiday parties. * I know, me. hating a party (insert look of shock and horror here)*. When I came to my first Dolphin Divers Holiday party in 2010, I was nervous and skeptical. But that party, and the ones that followed, gifted me with memories and warmth of what this season means. I am a Dolphin Diver because I choose to be: I choose this family and all of the wild, beautiful, sometimes difficult things we experience together. I want to encourage all of you to come to this year s holiday party, where we remember who we are, and why we are here. We are rugged, adventure seeking, GOOD people, who join together in mutual love of all of those things. Come out with us to celebrate this spirit and to be with each other this season. With love and gratitude. - Jamie Sepulveda Who knows, maybe Rex will be at the party, too!
