3 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Research and Development Training Research and development using computer aided design is an ongoing process integrating our expertise in engineering, ergonomics and manufacturing. New models are developed, manufactured and tested in our laboratories, as well as being consumer tested for fit, style and comfort. As a world-class manufacturer of PPE, North offers a wide variety of comprehensive in house and onsite training programs on all product lines. Manufacturing North uses modern, computerized injection molding presses in the manufacture of its respiratory products, to meet exacting standards and ensure consistent quality and performance. Quality and Standards Testing North s experienced work force tests its respiratory protection products in its own ISO 9001 facilities and institutes 100% testing on all critical product attributes. North s test equipment is calibrated to the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST). Unless stated, all respirators in this catalogue have been approved by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). 3

4 WHY RESPIRATORY PROTECTION? During a normal day, many people are exposed to hazardous chemical (dusts, fumes, gases and vapours), biological and physical agents. A respirator is a device which can reduce this exposure. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO TWO GROUPS: FILTERING DEVICES The air is purified when drawn through the filter.used only if the oxygen content of the air is normal. BREATHING APPARATUS Compressed air line equipment. Self contained breathing apparatus. PROTECTION FACTOR/ FILTRATION EFFICIENCY The protection factor is a measure of the respirator efficiency, i.e. its ability to collect pollutants. If the protection factor is 50, for instance, this means that the air inhaled through the respirator is 50 times cleaner than the surrounding air. The protection factor is calculated as follows: Example: 100 particles/cm 3 = Protection factor of 50 2 particles/cm 3 Filtering devices should never be used in situations immediately dangerous to life and health. 4

Check national recommendations. Gas filters are distinguished by a letter symbol, such as A, and the colour code such as brown. A gasfilter contains activated carbon which adsorbs a certain amount of gas or vapour. After saturation, leakage through the filter takes place at an accelerating rate. Use only filters from unopened packages. Only to be used against gases/vapours with clear warning e.g. smell or taste, properties. Check national recommendations. GAS FILTERS FOR HALF MASKS AND FULL FACE MASKS ARE CLASSIFIED INTO THREE CLASSES ACCORDING TO THE ADSORPTION CAPACITY Filter class Tested according EN 141 standard in concentrations to percent by volume = 1,000 ppm percent by volume = 5,000 ppm percent by volume = 10,000 ppm COMBINED FILTERS FOR HALF MASK AND FULL FACE MASK Combined filters are used if gas/vapour and particles occur simultaneously, e.g. during high pressure washing, spray painting, heating of substances or condensation of gases. The particle filter should be combined with a gas filter suitable for the working conditions. 5

The headstraps are latex free. The A810 provides protection from solids and particulate aerosols free of oil, and is ideal for dusty environments such as grinding, sanding and sweeping. 17 POWERED AIR SYSTEMS AIRBELT This turbo fan incorporates new technology, compact styling and functionality, draws contaminated air through a special P3 filter and supplies a continious flow of clean air to the wearer s headpiece. The integral electronic control unit continuously monitors the operation of the system and provides a clear audible warning of any restriction in the air flow if below the permitted safety level. When using full face mask or airhood the air flow is adjusted automatically as required, resulting in improved comfort and increased battery life. Airbelt units are supplied with belt, airhose, rechargeable battery pack, battery charger, user instructions and P3-filter. Available with Quick-release connector for North airhoods or Din connector for full face masks. COMPACT AIR Positive pressure, lightweight, battery powered breathing system offers the ultimate in protection against toxic dust and gases. The Turbo Unit is lightweight and compact and is equipped with 3 Din-threaded filter entrances. A wide range of North standard filter canisters are available. Compact Air units are supplied with belt, airhose, rechargeable battery pack, airflow indicator, battery charger and user instructions. Canisters must be ordered separately. 19 WARNINGS RELATED TO NORTH RESPIRATOR SELECTION AND USE 1. Failure to properly select the appropriate respirator for all the contaminants and concentrations against which protection is required, or failure to follow North s instructions and warnings, will expose the respirator user to hazardous materials, and the risk of serious illness, disability or death. 2. None of the respirators described in this catalogue may be used for sandblasting (abrasive blasting) 3. None of the respirators described in this catalogue may be used for fire fighting. 4. None of the respirators described in this catalogue may be used: In any atmosphere having less than the equivalent of 19.5% oxygen by volume at sea level. In atmospheres having concentrations of any substances greater than the maximum use concentrations for the specific type of respirator as shown in applicable OSHA or EPA regulations, in any applicable NIOSH publication, the contaminant Material Safety Date Sheet (MSDS) a pesticide label, or in the North respirator selection guide. For example, OSHA prohibits the use of disposable respirators in asbestos environments. In poorly ventilated areas, or in confined spaces such as tanks, small rooms, tunnels, sewers or vessels, unless the confined space is well ventilated and the concentration of toxic contaminants is known to be, and will continue to be, below the maximum use concentration recommended for the respirator. In atmospheres where the concentration of toxic contaminants are unknown, or are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) An IDLH atmosphere is an atmospheric concentration of any toxic, corrosive or asphyxiant substance that poses immediate threat to life, would cause irreversible debilitating effects on health,or would interfere with the ability to escape from a dangerous atmosphere. 5. Do not use an air-purifying respirator in any atmosphere having less than the equivalent of 19.5% oxygen by volume at sea level. 6. Do not use any air-purifying respirator for protection against: Air contaminants other than those listed on the air-purifying elements and on the NIOSH approval label which is supplied with each respirator and replacement air-purifying element; Particulate contaminants in an atmosphere containing oil unless a P class filter is used; Gases or vapors which generate high heats of reaction with the sorbent material in the cartridge. 7. Do not use a tight fitting respirator that has not been fit tested on the wearer. Fit testing of a potential wearer must be conducted before he/she is allowed to wear any tight fitting respirator. Fit testing instructions are given in Appendix A of OSHA regulation 29 CFR Carefully follow instructions for conducting periodic user seal checks contained in the Instructions for Use which accompanies each respirator to make certain that the respirator facepiece-to-face seal has not been compromised and that the respirator operates properly. 8. Do not use a tight fitting respirator when conditions prevent a good facepiece-to-face seal. Examples of such conditions are: a) the growth of beards, mustaches or sideburns which will pass between the facepiece sealing area and the face b) the use of spectacles, goggles or other devices which interfere with the respirator c) the use of head or face coverings which pass between the facepiece sealing area and the face; d) and missing teeth or dentures, facial deformities or deep scars 9. Do not use an air purifying element having End-of Service- Life-Indicators if you cannot see the End-of-Service-Life- Indicators while wearing the respirator. 10. Do not alter or modify a North respirator in any way 11. Do not use any supplied air respirator without it being supplied with an adequate volume of breathing air. 12. Immediately leave the area and remove the respirator if: a) breathing becomes difficult b) dizziness or other distress occurs c) the wearer senses irritation, smells or tastes the contaminants d) the respirator becomes damaged or e) the air supply fails 13. Any air-purifying respirator, when properly selected and fitted, will significantly reduce, but will not completely eliminate, the breathing of contaminant(s) by the respirator wearer. When working in atmospheres containing substances which are reported to cause cancer in amounts below the permissible exposure limit, the wearer will obtain better protection from a continuous flow or positive pressure air supplied respirator. 14. A respirator does not provide protection to exposed areas of the body. If the contaminated atmosphere contains vapors, gases or airborne particulate matter which may either irritate or burn the eyes or the skin, or can be absorbed by the body through penetration of the skin, the use of a full facepiece or specialized eye protection, hand and/or body coverings may be required for protection.
