INTRODUCTION RNAS Culdrose is the largest helicopter station in Europe operating in excess of one hundred fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The support required to maintain this level of activity is extensive and consequently Culdrose may also claim to be the largest employer in Cornwall. Throughout the year a number of work experience placements are available for the students from the local schools and colleges who have a genuine interest in a service career. There is a wide range of departments in which students may be placed for periods of up to five days, during which our staff aim to give a broad overview of the work involved and the standards required in that particular role. A list of these departments is on page 4. Due to the limited number of places that will be available during the next year schools and colleges should ensure that only students with a genuine interest (i.e. those wishing to pursue a career in the Royal Navy) apply for these places. CORRESPONDENCE All correspondence regarding this scheme should be addressed to: Work Experience Co-ordinator Education Centre RNAS Culdrose Helston Cornwall TR12 7RH Tel No: Fax No: navycu-airedctrasra@mod.uk 3

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Students should themselves complete an Application Form (Annex A) in full. If it is evident that a parent/teacher has completed this for the student, the application will be returned. Alternative dates/departments should be given where possible in order to maximise the chance of being placed. Incomplete, scruffy applications (torn, those that contain tippex or crossed out words) are not acceptable. Any forms that have not been signed by the school/college will be rejected. Applications must be received by the Work Experience (WEX) Co-ordinator at least 2 months in advance of the intended placement dates. The applications window will open on Mon 15 Sep 14 The Work Experience Co-ordinator will not accept any applications after 03 Apr 15. Once the application form has been received and a placement agreed you will be sent a confirmation letter, Consent Form and a Programme Outline. On the reverse of the programme outline will be information regarding Health and Safety, Insurance and a list of any Risks involved in the placement. These forms should be read carefully and a copy should be signed by those concerned and returned to the Work Experience Co-ordinator, RNAS Culdrose. Please note Placements will not be honoured unless these forms are signed and returned to Culdrose WEX Co-ordinator. It is imperative that all requests for work experience placements at Culdrose are processed through the Work Experience Co-ordinator to ensure all Health, Safety, Insurance and Child Protection Issues are adhered to. Schools must ensure that students, who may well have been rejected by the Work Experience Co-ordinator, do not go on to arrange unofficial placements through friends/relatives they know at Culdrose, this could have a detrimental effect on the WEX Scheme. These types of placements would not have been risk assessed, the students would not be insured, and Child Protection Issues will not have been considered. 5
SELECTION OF STUDENTS FOR PLACEMENTS Typically, the number of applications far exceeds the number of available places. It is clearly in everyone s interest that only the most deserving candidates are placed. It is initially the responsibility of the school or college to ensure that candidates for places are seriously considering a career in the Royal Navy and have an interest in the particular departments for which they apply. It is strongly recommended that the student contact their local Royal Navy/Royal Marines Careers Office. Some departments are not able to take two students a week so if there is more than one student applying for the same department, on the same dates, then the most deserving applicant should be pointed out, this will help us decide which student would benefit the most from the placement. Placements are on a first come first served basis. Being related to or knowing personnel at Culdrose will not guarantee a placement. Students will usually stay in their chosen area for the week, unless, depending on work commitments the department is able to show students other areas of Culdrose. It should be noted that there are no opportunities for students to be taken flying and we would stress that this is not what the scheme is offering. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation is not available to students attending work experience placements. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS Students must make their own travel arrangements to and from the Air Station. No responsibility is accepted for students travelling to and from the establishment. LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS A packed lunch should be brought on the first day unless otherwise instructed by the department. Each department will have different facilities, which will be stated on the programme. 6
SCHOOL STAFF VISITS Teachers wanting to visit their students whilst on Work Experience should arrange this well in advance by completing the Visit Request Form at Annex C. This should be returned at least 2 weeks prior to the visit. As there are a number of schools wanting to visit this will be on a first come first served basis. Generally visitors will be accompanied by the Work Experience Co-ordinator or the Education Officer, unless other duties preclude them from doing so, in which case it may be possible for personnel from the relevant department to act as host. Although arranged in advance, it is not guaranteed that a student will be at the department being visited on the day due to last minute changes in their programme. EVALUATION OF WORK EXPERIENCE RNAS Culdrose would like to provide the best Work Experience programme possible. Students will be asked to complete an evaluation form at the end of their placement. (Annex D) MINISTRY OF DEFENCE PUBLIC LIABILITY STATEMENT The Ministry of Defence (MOD) will deal with any common law claim on the basis of legal liability, which is to say any claim that arises due to the negligence of the MOD, its servants or agents. Any such claim should be forwarded in the first instance to: Common Law Claims & Policy (CLC&P) 1st Floor, Zone I MOD Main Building Whitehall London SW1A 2HB OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AT RNAS CULDROSE The MOD does not purchase public liability insurance, but accepts its own risks and acts as its own insurer; consequently our cover is without financial limit. 7
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AT RNAS CULDROSE AIRCREW SURVIVAL TRAINING (POOL DRILLS) During the Work Experience week there may be an opportunity for your students to conduct aircrew survival training in RNAS Culdrose s Swimming Pool. Please note: students will be issued with the parental consent form to take home to their parents for signature if they are fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to take part in Pool Drills. More details and a copy of the Risk Assessment for this activity are at Annex F. POTENTIAL OFFICERS ACQUAINT COURSES RNAS Culdrose provides short residential acquaint courses for candidates interested in learning about the Fleet Air Arm with a view to joining the Royal Navy as officers. The courses give candidates a detailed insight into the workings of an air station, the training of aircrew officers, and an overview of the role of the Fleet Air Arm worldwide. There is some limited opportunity for flying. Courses run approximately monthly, starting on Mondays and completing on Thursdays. Bids to attend these courses are co-ordinated by regional offices of the Directorate of Naval Recruiting, either directly or in conjunction with Schools Careers Officers. For more information please contact your local careers office. 8
