4 Introduction P a g e 4 GAR Training Services offer training in the operation of a large range of plant machinery, including diggers, dump trucks, excavators, elevated working platforms, telehandlers and cranes. Our training can be run on-site at your location, for your flexibility and convenience, and with the advantage of providing training within your working environment. We maintain excellent pass rates with a friendly and professional approach. Most of our work comes via personal recommendation. All courses are taught in line with the following: Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L117 Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 98 Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 98 Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations Why Train? The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998, states: That every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken. This quote is fundamental to understanding the importance of quality training for employees within an organization. It is essential that your workforce is skilled and fully qualified; as the market becomes tougher and more competitive a case of survival of the fittest develops. Those who have invested well in training will stand out from those who have failed to. If in the unfortunate event of an incident the Health & Safety Executive may bring a prosecution to court if there is reason to believe inadequate training [in line with any of the appropriate ACOPS i.e. PUWER and LOLER] was not provided, this could invalidate your company insurance, with the directors ultimately found personally liable. The potential for adverse publicity, should a company be convicted, and the subsequent loss of goodwill and business should be encouragement enough to ensure that good standards of training are maintained. 5 P a g e 5 National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) Since NPORS was formed in 1992 it has worked hard to ensure that appropriate training and assessments are being delivered to employers in the construction, utilities, distribution and warehousing, ports and marine, rail and agricultural sectors. The main objective of the NPORS is to allow a flexible approach to meet the needs of the employer and to help and assist in providing an adequately trained workforce. The NPORS operator registration card is produced for an individual who has successfully completed practical and knowledge assessments on the categories shown on the reverse of the card. This shows that they have achieved a level of competence to operate the item on the card. The new NPORS card displays a QR code which when scanned directs the person wishing to verify the authenticity of the card to a secure area of the NPORS data base which holds details of categories and qualifications held by the operator. The NPORS is now a UKCG accepted record scheme. The move ends what has effectively been a monopoly for the Construction Plant Competency Scheme (CPCS) for the most general types of construction machinery. Until now, a CPCS card has been a requirement to operate a digger, dump truck or crane on a major UK construction site. With this new agreement, an NPORS card will also be equally acceptable.

Course Aims and Objectives: To provide the candidate with a thorough grounding of the law and standards relating to lifting equipment. The course will demonstrate the statutory requirements for the inspection, rejection and the reporting of lifting equipment in service. The course will also provide practical advice to enable those carrying out inspections to do so confidently and correctly. 47 P a g e 47 Training Types Explained G A R Training Services can offer a range of training. These are explained below together with course duration details, certification can be provided with applicable accreditation: Basic (Novice) Training Basic training is available to novices or operators with some experience but no proof of previous formal training or testing. The training program will run between 3 5 days depending on previous experience Refresher Training Refresher training is available to operators with some past experience of training and testing but requiring a course to update their skills. The training program for refresher training normally runs for 1 day Experienced Worker Test/Assessment If your operators are experienced, then Experienced Worker testing is available. Operators are expected to undertake a theory test to demonstrate their knowledge on the particular piece of plant. If successful the operator will then demonstrate their experience and knowledge of the machine practically. Assessments normally run for 2.5 hours per operator It is recommended that delegates have at least 2 years prior experience although, as with anything, experience and ability are subjective Conversion Training Conversion training is available to operators with experience of training skills on similar machine, e.g. moving to a larger machine or machine that carries out similar tasks. The training program for conversion training is nominally 1 4 days depending on experience and type of machine.
