The breather valves, reservoir bag and headstrap are all installed on a rigid plastic plate that is attached to the facepiece. The pax mask is a continuous flow system. Oxygen is supplied to the reservoir bag from a metered flow orifice usually in a location on the deployment container check valve. Some pax masks have flow indicators in the reservoir bag or delivery tube Page 5 of 19
2.0 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (Continued) The deployment container automatically opens and releases the masks when oxygen pressure is applied to the manifold inlet fitting. When the passenger pulls the mask to his or her face, the lanyard pin is removed from the check valve which starts oxygen flow from the metered orifice through the delivery tube to the reservoir bag. During inhalation, the passenger breathes oxygen from the reservoir bag. When oxygen in the bag is depleted, a valve opens on the pax mask permitting ambient air to enter the facepiece. A typical two-pax-mask oxygen deployment container is shown in Figure 1. AVOX Systems manufactures deployment containers in one, two, three and four mask configurations. Typical Two-Mask Deployment Container with Pax Masks Figure Page 6 of 19
3.0 SERVICE PROCEDURES 3.1 Annual Deployment Container Inspection Follow the applicable aircraft maintenance manual for procedures and instructions that apply to the mask deployment container. AVOX Systems recommends that you deploy the pax masks at least one time each year and do an inspection for the following. - The container opens correctly and the pax masks are released correctly. - The lanyard pin can be removed with the correct force. - The donning instructions label (usually found on the container lid) is attached and can be read. - The tubing is correctly connected to the orifice fitting. - The lanyard pins are correctly installed in the valve actuator. 3.2 Annual Deployment Container Cleaning and Disinfecting a. 10 3.3.1 Pax Mask Visual Inspection Do a visual inspection of the pax mask every three years, or less. Do a visual inspection before a new pax mask is installed into a deployment container. A visual inspection must include all of these steps. - Do a check for mechanical damage such as components that are torn, broken, frayed, or missing. - Do a check for material condition: Examine all parts for changes in material properties, such as loss of flexibility, permanent deformation, or kinks. All flapper valves must be in place, round and not distorted. The bag and tube cannot be discolored. The headstrap must stretch when you pull it and go back to the initial size. - By looking through the bag and tube, do a visual check for liquid (droplets) or solid (dirt) contamination on the internal surface of the bag and tube. - Do a visual check for solid (dirt) or liquid (tacky) contamination of the complete pax mask including the external surface of the bag and tube. - Make sure all the necessary parts are assembled onto the pax mask. Refer to the applicable component maintenance manual if necessary. - Make sure that all the applicable service bulletins have been applied to the pax mask Pax Mask Cleaning and Disinfecting WARNING: DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE BAG AND TUBE. IF YOU DISASSEMBLE THE BAG AND TUBE YOU MAY WEAKEN THE PAX MASK WHICH MAY CAUSE THE PAX MASK TO COME APART WHEN THE PAX MASK IS PULLED DURING DEPLOYMENT. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH TO THE USER OF THE PAX MASK. CAUTION: DO NOT CLEAN THE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL SURFACE OF THE BAG AND TUBE. IF YOU CLEAN THE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL SURFACE OF THE BAG AND TUBE YOU MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BAG AND TUBE MATERIALS OVER TIME. THIS DAMAGE WILL DECREASE THE SERVICE LIFE OF THE PAX MASK Page 8 of 19
3.3.2 Pax Mask Cleaning and Disinfecting (Continued) Clean and disinfect the pax mask when necessary. The bag and tube cannot be cleaned or disinfected. Do not clean or disinfect the internal or external surface of the bag and tube. Replace the bag and tube or the next higher assembly if necessary. Clean and disinfect the pax masks as follows. a. Clean all surfaces of the pax mask, except the bag and tube, using a mild soap and water solution. b. Flush all surfaces of the pax mask, except the bag and tube, using clean water to remove the soap and water solution. c. Shake the drops of water from the pax mask. WARNING: REFER TO THE APPLICABLE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) FOR PRECAUTIONARY DATA, APPROVED SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL AID OR PERSONAL INJURY MAY OCCUR. d. Disinfect the pax mask, except the bag and tube, using a solution of Zephiran Chloride (also known as Benzalkonium Chloride; available from AVOX Systems as part number ) in water applied to a lint-free cloth. NOTE: The recommended solution is 3 parts Zephiran Chloride to 1 part distilled water. e. Flush all surfaces of the pax mask, except the bag and tube, using clean water to remove the disinfectant solution. f. Shake the drops of water from the pax mask and dry the pax mask using air that is clean, dry and oil-free. WARNING: REFER TO THE APPLICABLE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) FOR PRECAUTIONARY DATA, APPROVED SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL AID OR PERSONAL INJURY MAY OCCUR. g. After the pax mask is all dry, lightly dust only the outside of the pax mask facepiece using Neo-Novacite powder (AVOX P/N ). NOTE: The powder helps the pax masks release properly Page 9 of 19
3.3.3 Pax Mask Recommended Service Life The total service life of a pax mask is six years from the date of manufacture. This includes shelf life and on-aircraft service life. After six years, replace the pax mask or do an overhaul. An overhaul returns the pax mask to a zero time condition Pax Mask Overhaul Do an overhaul on the pax mask or replace the pax mask at six years from the date of manufacture. Use the applicable component maintenance manual to do an overhaul of the pax mask or send the pax mask to a AVOX Systems Authorized Repair and Overhaul Facility. An overhaul repairs the pax mask to a zero time condition. An overhaul must include at least all of these steps: - Do a visual inspection and do any repairs that are necessary. - Replace the bag and tube. - Replace the headstrap. - Do a functional test. - Clean the facepiece. 4.0 REPACKING INSTRUCTIONS 4.1 Common Repacking steps for all Deployment Containers a. Inspect and disinfect the pax mask and the deployment container as necessary per paragraph 3.0. NOTE: The pax mask can be inspected, disinfected and repacked while still attached to the deployment container. b. Fold the headstrap into the facepiece. Pull the lanyard cord (if applicable) or the stringer (if applicable) out to the side of the facepiece so that they do not interfere with repacking. NOTE: The stringer cord is attached to the mask valve plate or to a lanyard. The stringer has yellow webbing with the word PULL or a figure of a hand pulling the stringer printed on it. c. Lay the reservoir bag on a clean, flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles. See Figure 2. d. Carefully fold the reservoir bag lengthwise into thirds (outer edges folded inward over the center of the bag). Do not crease the bag. See Figure Page 10 of 19
Figure 2 Figure Page 11 of 19
4.2 Repacking Masks into Containers with less than 1.25 Inch (3.2 cm) Clearance a. Fold the two sides of the facepiece in over the elastic strap. See Figure 4. Figure 4 b. Fold the reservoir bag into three layers of equal length over the folded facepiece. See Figure 5. Figure Page 12 of 19
4.2 Repacking Masks into Containers with Less... (Continued) c. Fold the two open sides of the facepiece over the reservoir bag. See Figure 6. Figure 6 WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE TUBING DOES NOT HAVE A KINK. A KINK IN THE TUBING CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TUBING AND INJURY OR DEATH. d. Wind the oxygen tubing into coils under the mask. NOTE: Some deployment containers have keepers for the tubing. In these deployment containers, start nearest the manifold and put the tubing into the first space in the keeper. Then wind the tubing and put into consecutive spaces until all of the tubing is in the keeper (see Figure 7). Make sure to leave at least 6 in (18 cm) of tubing free between the keeper and the bag Page 13 of 19
Figure Repacking Masks into Containers with more than 1.25 Inch (3.2 cm) Clearance a. Fold the reservoir bag away from the breathing valves and into the facepiece. Make sure the bag does not go over the breathing valves. See Figure 8. Figure Page 14 of 19
4.3 Repacking Masks into Containers with more than 1.25 Inch...(Continued) b. Wind the oxygen tubing into coils inside the facepiece over the reservoir bag. See Figure Installation of Masks in Containers. Figure 9 a. Connect the oxygen tubing to the manifold oxygen fitting. NOTE: A maximum of 1.0 inch (2.5 cm) may be removed one time only from the end of the tube of the pax mask if necessary. This allows a pax mask to be installed in a deployment container one more time. WARNING: MAKE SURE THE LANYARD PIN IS INSERTED INTO THE CORRECT CHECK VALVE FOR THE MASK BEING INSTALLED. CROSS CONNECTED PINS WILL RESULT IN PASSENGERS PULLING LANYARD CORDS ONLY TO INITIATE OXYGEN FLOW TO ANOTHER MASK CAUSING POSSIBLE INJURY OR DEATH TO THE PAX MASK USER. b. Insert the lanyard pin into the correct check valve Page 15 of 19
4.4 Installation of Masks in Containers (Continued) c. Place the pax mask into the deployment container with the facepiece in first. This will show the pax mask valve plate when the deployment container is open. Note: The masks must be aligned with the bags away from the actuation pins and the lid release mechanism (see Figure 10). The bags can be located anywhere from Point A to Point B (see Figure 10). Do not place bags in the shaded area of Figure 10. Figure Page 16 of 19
4.4 Installation of Masks in Containers (Continued) d. If applicable, prepare and install the stringer as follows. (1) Start at the weighted end of the stringer and fold the stringer toward the cord. Arrange the cord loosely on top of the stringer (see Figure 11). Carefully place the folded stringer in the box on the same side of the supply tube as the attached mask away from the release plunger (see Figure 10). (2) Repeat Step (1) for the other cord and stringer (see Figures 10 & 11). (3) Carefully place the lid on the container. Note: Make sure the oxygen tubing, the lanyard cord and the stringer are free to deploy and are not caught between the body and the lid of the deployment container. Figure Page 17 of 19
4.4 Installation of Masks in Containers (Continued) e. Close and latch the deployment container lid. (1) Some deployment containers have balls that latch under a retainer to hold the lid (see Figure 12). To close and latch these deployment containers, use a pin and press inward against the valve piston far enough to retract the balls into the latch detent. Close the lid and remove the pin. (2) Other deployment containers have a friction-spring latch that holds the lid secure to the body of the deployment container as shown in Figure 13. To close and latch these deployment containers, push the lid into the body of the deployment container until the lid latches. If the box has a floating lid, slide the lid tool (AVOX Part Number S52-1) between the outer lid and inner lid and push at each of the two latches until latched as shown in Figure 14.
