I feel lucky to be born in the Swiss Alps, I have so far one of the most beautiful and wild playgrounds at my disposal where I have trained myself. 7 Kilian Jornet I grew up in a mountain lodge, located at 2,000 meters above sea level, in the Catalan Pyrenees where mountains were always my playground. I was introduced to outdoor activities at a young age, and I quickly developed a passion for mountain sports along with a natural aptitude for adventure and physical challenges, which has increased with experience. My love for mountains and passion for overcoming challenges has led me to sponsor the Summits of My Life project, a series of mountain challenges all over the world. 8 SEAL PROJECT POMOCA and the seals Kaarina Tiainen inspires peace and determination. She intelligently juggles her family life and her passion for seals. Kaarina is now engaged in an active struggle against old fishermen and politicians for the protection of the Saimaa ringed seal, the world s seal species most threatened with extinction. One of her missions is to go into schools, kindergartens, and cultural events to speak about the Saimaa ringed seal and the inhabitants of Lake Saimaa so that the next generation will be informed about protecting seals. The Saimaa ringed seal is a subspecies of the ringed seal, and it was isolated from the Baltic Sea in Lake Saimaa (Finland) some 8, 000 years ago. It has been estimated that right after the ice age, the population of Saimaa ringed seals was several thousand. During the 20th century, the population of Saimaas fell drastically from 1,000 to 150, mainly as a result of hunting. In 1955, seal hunting was banned. Currently their greatest predators are non-approved nets and traps (made of nylon) and environmental toxins. Work on protecting the species began in 1980; since then the population of Saimaas has climbed to 300 individuals, but this still is not enough to preserve the species. Nowadays their greatest predators are illegal fishermen (non-approved nets and traps are responsible for the death of 50% of baby seals), an increase in the number of tourist cabins on the shore of the lake, and climate change (very poor weather conditions in mid-winter). Our sport is directly connected to the seals, since as recently as the 1930s, climbing skins were made from real seal skin. Even today the skins are called seal skins in several languages. To highlight the seals, POMOCA has decided to establish a long-term relationship with Kaarina and the Finnish Association of Nature Conservation in support of their actions. So the seal once again takes its place in the soul of POMOCA and our sport, but this time we are protecting it! 10 TECHNOLOGIES What is a skin? 1. A PLUSH WITH ANGELED FIBERS... The plush offers GRIP and GLIDE to the skin. These characteristics vary depending on the material used (nylon, mixed or mohair) and the way the fibers are woven (thicker or thinner, longer or shorter, more or less angled). Normally, a skin that GLIDEs more, GRIPs less SUBJECT TO VARIOUS TECHNICAL TREATMENTS... These treatments provide waterproofing for fibers, which is key to preventing snow clumps from forming. Wet fibers can freeze with a change in temperature. When the fibers freeze they attract snow which sticks to the skin, forming clumps. They also give the colour to the skins and help with fixing the fibers to the angle/backing, which is why it is important for durability and GLIDE/GRIP WITH A LINING... The lining prevents water transfer from the plush to the adhesive. A lining that is not waterproof causes damp on the adhesive and reduces its tack (stickiness). The adhesive could come away from the skin and stick to the ski. A quality lining guarantees the correct functioning of the adhesive and also increases resistance to the skin tearing AND AN ADHESIVE The adhesive attaches the skin to the ski. In cold and wet conditions, adhesion may be difficult: in general, the adhesives do not perform well in water or cold, as it is harder for them to stick in a wet environment (mist or heat in spring/damp snow) or in the cold.

11 Technologies The technologies of POMOCA are based on a deep understanding of snow, enhanced by research and development. Textile engineers and chemists work hand-in-hand with mountain guides and athletes. Together they modify the materials contact surfaces and thus push the effectiveness of climbing skins to unimaginable heights Exclusive to POMOCA, SAFER SKIN is a 100% waterproof membrane that completely blocks the absorption of moisture and guarantees good glue performance on a dry base. What s more, SAFER SKIN offers excellent tear resistance and ease of handling. It is very easy to trim the skin, and it remains 100% waterproof after cutting. POMOCA has succeeded in making its classical SAFER SKIN membrane lighter. Thanks to finer layers in the membrane, SAFER SKIN LIGHT is 12% lighter (150g/m2 less). While remaining 100% waterproof, and with slightly less wear resistance, SAFER SKIN LIGHT makes the pair of skins about 60-75g lighter. SAFER SKIN VERTICAL is the lightest membrane on the market. The membrane is reduced to its minimal form for the best possible weight optimization. Certainly more fragile, but still 100% waterproof, it offers a light weight that previously was unavailable. MEMBRANE The new TIPON membrane technology takes advantage of the most recent generation of polysiloxanes. The juxtaposition of two types of induction (a membrane and an adhesive) directly into the fabric guarantees better performance. Skins with TIPON are more compact (40% less volume), light (15% less weight) and easy to use thanks to the new characteristics that surpass existing technologies. Completely waterproof, washable, UV-resistant, and effective even in extreme temperatures, TIPON represents an advance in terms of both safety and comfort. GLIDE Thanks to the exclusive GLIDE process, ski tourers get extra glide with less effort. This treatment, which is applied at the end of the production process and to the entire length of the fiber, makes the skin glide and resist moisture more effectively. Skins with GLIDE offer, an effective process for the entire life of the skin, and unique anti-glopping performance. POMOCA has developed a new GLIDE process. With the same application technology, but a new, very high-quality GLIDE PRO product, skins with GLIDE PRO offer exceptional extra glide, which is essential for high-level competitors. HIDROFOBIC TREATMENT For a number of years, EVER DRY has been the most widely known and the best loved anti-glopping procedure for longdistance ski tourers. This treatment over the entire length of the fiber makes the fiber hydrophobic and prevents the buildup of snow clumps. An effective procedure for the entire life of the skin. In the interest of continual improvement, POMOCA s chemists have developed a new generation of EVER DRY that is gentler on the environment. The EVER DRY 2.0 treatment contains no PFOA, a chemical component that is harmful to the environment. Since April 2015, EVER DRY 2.0 technology has replaced the old EVER DRY in the entire collection of skins from POMOCA and its OEM clients. GRIP Good climbing grip is very important. So POMOCA has developed a combination of materials and weaving techniques to combine glide and durability with gripping power. Proper alignment and the fiber attachment systems make POMOCA skins very stable under all conditions and for the entire life of the skin.

18 CLIMB CLIMB Climb and Glide Improvement of the glide factor is paramount to all high quality skins. Recent studies by the TSA in Innsbruck have demonstrated that between a poor gliding and well-gliding skin, an energy saving of up to 150kcal/ hr is possible, which is 50% of the gliding energy. Considering that standard energy consumption during physical exercise is 700kcal/hr, using a well-gliding skin can thus enable energy savings of 20%! In other words, after four hours of physical effort with a well-gliding skin, you will have saved the equivalent of 100g of chocolate cream! Preparing a self-adhesive skin for skis can take a long time and requires specific knowledge. POMOCA has developped the new universal, light, and easy-to-apply ready2climb set. The ready2climb skin can be cut to a specific ski in just two minutes without any special tools. Choosing the correct skin has never been so simple: On the web site enter the name of your ski brand and model to find the correct skin size. Select your preferred skin quality. The adjustable loop can be fixed to any type of ski. For this system, POMOCA offers a complete list of skins on the market, so you can find the self-adhesive skin best suited to your needs. The skin has a strap already sewn to the back although the front can be cut to adjust to the ski length. Therefore the Back Fix skin adapts perfectly to all ski lengths. 42 HISTORY Louis & Olga Dufour Advertising published in 1946 The Dufour family s history has been linked to tourism and winter sports since as early as Louis Dufour, a hotelier in Avants, Switzerland, was the first to use skis in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The family also organized skiing and bobsledding competitions for the prestigious hosts of Montreux, Switzerland. In the 1930s Louis son, Éric, an engineer and avid ski touring fan, developed and marketed a canvas rescue sled. Thanks to its skis and poles, the Gaillard-Dufour sled was able to transport injured people. Alongside his father, Éric developed the production of non-slip skins, and later adhesive skins, as well as many other mountain accessories. Around 1941, the Dufour company successfully launched rubber sole production for city and mountain shoes. Assisted by his wife, Antoinette, Éric managed the company until In 1996 their son, Guy, took up the torch. His expert knowledge of rubber gives POMOCA skins their unparalleled waterproofing. In 2011, POMOCA joined the SALEWA group, turning a new page in its history and facing new challenges.
