1 MSHS/SSC Nordic Ski Team Registration, Training and Racing Schedule for : I. Program Descriptions and Registration Fees: Welcome to the MSHS/SSC Nordic Ski Team 2012 Michigan State Champions! Last year was our largest team ever with 12 boys and 8 girls competing. Nordic Skiing does not receive direct financial support from MSHS and is a self-funded sport at MSHS in affiliation with the Superiorland Ski Club. Multiple child discounts ($10) apply for other family members enrolled in SSC team programs (Prep, Adventure, or Ski Cats). Please contact the MSHS Athletic office to request a Scholarship or refund. Please return all fees and paperwork to the MSHS Athletic office before the first day of practice (November 5). Junior Varsity-. The junior varsity team is designed for people who are new to cross country skiing and/ or ski racing. It is also an excellent for athletes using skiing as cross training for another sport. Although basic ski fundamentals will be taught its emphasis is on competitive skiing. 3 days a week dryland training (Nov 5 Dec 1, or first snow) 5 days a week on snow training (Dec1 Feb 16) Coaching support at all team races Waxing at team races Elite level waxing at State championships Cost $150+club membership Varsity- The Varsity team is designed for the intermediate advance ski racer whose goals are to be competitive at the state level. 5 days a week dryland and on snow training (Nov 5 - Feb 16) Use of club roller skis Coaching support at all team races Waxing at team races Elite level waxing at all Mesabi Invite, Jr. Noque and State championships Cost $225+club membership Junior National (JN) Team- The JN team is designed for the advanced ski racer who's goals are to be competitive at the regional and national level. 5 days a week dryland and on snow training ( Nov 5- March 16) Use of club roller skis Coaching support at all team races Elite level waxing at all team races and JN Qualifiers Cost $300+club membership
2 II. Additional Expenses for Training and Racing NTN trail passes required separately (family or student individual) to support trail grooming at practice venues. Equipment: You will need both classic and skating gear to fully participate in training and racing. There are discount purchasing options through local shops (Downwind and Sports Rack) and at the SSC ski swap (members receive a preferred selection start time). SSC also has limited rental gear for the season please contact Debby Muskovitch at or debby@northjacksonco.com for SSC rental information SSC provides racing suits for all athletes with generous financial sponsorship from River Valley Bank. Warm-ups are available for purchase, and SSC has some extras for use for scholarship athletes. Travel. Out of town travel to races and associated expenses will be necessary for athletes. III. Training and Racing Schedules Participation and Varsity Letter and Schedule: To qualify for a varsity letter you will be required to participate regularly in team training from November 5 February 16, have no more then three unexcused absences (no call no show), and you will need to participate in races at the Michigan High School Championships as well as three other qualifying races from the attached Schedule. JN Qualifying Race Schedule: To qualify for JNs you must meet qualifying criteria specified by the Great Lakes Division or Midwest Division of USSA which is available for review at The list of qualifying races is shown on the attached schedule. You will need to register with CXC to receive qualifying points and purchase a USSA competition license to compete at JNs. More information will be provided at the mandatory parents meeting on November 28. Training Schedule: November 5 until snow (assuming December 6): Dryland and Roller skiing Monday: Bounding Intervals at NTN south trailhead (on M553) or Blueberry ski trails 4:00 5:30 (All teams) Tuesday: Roller skiing at south trailhead* 4:00 5:30 (Varsity and JN) Wednesday: Running Intervals at fit strip 4:00 5:30 (All teams) Thursday: Roller skiing at south trailhead* 4:00-5:30 (Varsity and JN) Friday: Circuit training at Fit Strip 4:00-5:30 (All teams) *BIKE HELMET MANDATORY HIGH VISIBILITY OUTER WEAR STRONGLY ENCOURAGED Snow schedule 3:30-5:30 Location to be determined by snow and weather conditions on a weekly

5 Program Descriptions Ski Cats Coordinator: Pam Fjeldheim or Ages: 5 10 Ability: Beginner to intermediate When: Sundays (2:00 3:30pm), January 13, 20, February 3, 10, 17, and March 3rd. Where: Noquemanon Forestville Trailhead, Blueberry Ridge, and the Fit Strip. Participants receive instruction in classical technique (some freestyle offered). Instruction in fundamental skills and maneuvers through ski games and activities with peers. Adventure Club Contact: Jim Argeropoulos or Ages: Ability: Beginning to Advanced Recreational When: Sundays (2:00-3:30pm) January 6, 13, 20, February 3, 10, and 17th Where: Multiple trail venues Learn to ski, hang out with friends on snow, get more fit, explore adventure skiing. Geared towards racing and high school athletic competition. The team meets 3 to 6 days per week to train for and race at competitions Program Benefits Rental Equipment Our goal is to make participation in skiing programs possible for all. We have limited rental equipment and will try to make available both classical and skating equipment to those in need. We may not be able to honor all requests. First come, first served. Ski Cats Rental $50 for no wax classic skis and boots. There is a $75 charge for the use of each complete set of equipment for the season ($150 for both classic and skate gear) for older youth. Racing Teams The Ski Club provides limited training equipment, wax and waxing equipment and assistance available to all team members at no additional cost. Discounted Equipment Purchase Opportunities There are opportunities to purchase equipment at discount prices for all Superiorland Ski Club members including: Club Ski Swap: Saturday, Nov. 10th Holiday Inn, Highway 41 in Marquette. See Club Nights: Downwind Sports, Oct. 23rd (6-9pm), Sports Rack, Nov. 13th(4-8pm) Member discounts at local ski shops. Call shops for details. Special Events and Programs All youth registrants will receive a commemorative 20th Anniversary SSC T-shirt. 6 Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement for Youth Programs In consideration of myself OR my child participating in the snow ski related activities, and/or other activities, offered by Superiorland Ski Club I represent that I OR my child understand the nature of this activity and that I OR my child are qualified, in good health, and in proper physical condition to participate in such activity. I acknowledge on behalf of myself OR my child that if I OR my child believe event/activity conditions are unsafe, we will immediately discontinue participation in the ski club youth program. It is fully understood that this activity involves risks of serious bodily injury, including permanent disability, paralysis and/or death, which may be caused by my OR my child s own actions or inactions, those of others participating in the youth programs, the conditions in which the youth program takes place, or the negligence of the releasees named below, that there may be other risks either not known to me OR my child, or not readily foreseeable at this time: and I OR my child fully accept and assume all such risks and all responsibility for losses, costs, and damages I OR my child might incur as a result of my OR my child s participation in the Superiorland Ski Club youth programs. I hereby release, discharge and covenant not to sue Superiorland Ski Club, Marquette MI, its respective administrators, directors, agents, officers, volunteers, and employees, any sponsors, advertisers, and, if applicable, owners and lessors of the premises on which the youth program takes place (each considered one of the Releasees herein), and release and discharge them from all liability, claims, demands, losses, or damages on my account caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the releasees or otherwise, including negligent rescue operations; and I further agree that if, despite this release, waiver of liability, and assumption of risk, that I, or anyone on my behalf OR on behalf of my child, makes a claim against any of the Releasees, I will indemnify, save, and hold harmless each of the Releasees from any loss, liability, damage or cost which may incur as the result of such claim. I have read this RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, and understand that I have given up substantial rights by signing it freely and without any inducement or assurance of any nature, and intend it to be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law, and agree that if any portion of this agreement/release agreement is held to be invalid the balance, notwithstanding, shall continue in full force and effect. 8 Superiorland X-C Ski Club Rental Equipment Agreement Equipment rental is only available for youth that are participating and have paid and signed the waiver form for the Ski Cat, Prep Team or Race Team programs. Season rental fees are per person and per set (classic or skate): $50 for Ski Cats and Adventure Club, $75 for Prep Team, $100 for Race Team. Poles or boots only full season any team: $20. 9 MSHS Nordic Ski Jackets and Pants Downwind Sports is again offering our club and MSHS high school skiers a chance to order Black CRAFT jackets and pants at cost. These jackets and pants are great for skiing. We will get the Superiorland Ski Club logo embroidered on the upper chest of the jacket and on the back center MSHS Nordic. The cost of the jacket will be $110; pants without embroidery are $75. To ensure correct sizing, please see Jeff and Down Wind Sports for a fitting.
