1 Health and safety policy This is the statement of general policy and arrangements for: Overall and final responsibility for health and safety is that of: Day-to-day responsibility for ensuring this policy is put into practice is delegated to: STATEMENT OF GENERAL POLICY To prevent accidents and cases of club-related ill health and provide adequate control of health and safety risks arising from club activities. To provide adequate training to ensure volunteers are competent to carry out their duties. To engage and consult with volunteers on day-to-day health and safety conditions and provide advice and supervision on occupational health. To implement emergency procedures evacuation in case of fire or other significant incident. To maintain safe and healthy volunteering conditions, provide and maintain club facilities, trailers and equipment, and ensure safe storage/use of substances. RESPONSIBILITY OF: Name/Title Club Coaches Club Coaches All club officers and coaches Portreath Surf Life Saving Club ACTION/ARRANGEMENTS Relevant risk assessments completed and actions arising out of those assessments implemented. All club officers and coaches are to work within the RA, NOP and EAP for the activities being provided and the location being used. Risk assessments reviewed every year, or earlier if working habits or conditions change. All club officers and coaches will be given necessary health and safety induction and provided with/or have appropriate training in surf life saving, lifeguarding and will have personal protective equipment. Club officers and routinely consulted on health and safety matters as they arise but also formally consulted at regular health and safety performance review meetings or correspondences if required. All club officers and coaches will have access to the health and safety policy, risk assessments, NOP and EAP. As part of the daily safety briefing before activities, coaches and participants will be made aware of the emergency procedure should someone become ill or injured or if an incident occurs. At the safety briefing the designated meeting point and the location of the emergency mobile phone or VHF Radio, nearest land emergency phone and the first aid kit will be identified. All club officers, coaches and participants will be made aware of the nearest public conveniences and drinking water. All club officers and coaches will wear adequate PPE fit for purpose for when both in the sea and on land. System in place for routine inspection of all club facilities, trailers and equipment and for ensuring that action is promptly taken to address any defects. Health and safety law poster is displayed: First-aid box and accident book are located: Accidents and ill health at work reported under RIDDOR: (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) Signed: (Chairperson) In the first aid room First aid kit and accident book is located in the main hall and the downstairs hallway. When operating at a new location or area, a designated person to assess access or ground for potential slips and trips before proceeding with participants to monitor areas of operation for good housekeeping. Good facilities and welfare procedures help prevent illness in Club officers, coaches and participants. When possible and dependent on activities club officers, coaches and participants are encouraged to wear footwear or wetsuit boots. Club officers and coaches to be vigilant for sharps when operating on beaches in particular. Club officers, coaches and participants to work in pairs (buddy system) when moving heavy or awkward objects i.e. surf skis or paddleboards. Club officers, coaches and participants shown correct and safe technique in carrying surf skis and paddleboards i.e. close to body. 3 Weather extremes Fire/explosion Tents Load securing Coupling/uncoupling Transporting equipment to location Coaches and participants risk discomfort and possible ill health from exposure to weather extremes, including hypothermia, heat exhaustion/stroke, sunburn and dehydration. All club officers, coaches and participants in the vicinity could suffer from smoke inhalation or burns. All coaches, participants and public could suffer injury in the case of a tent falling during strong winds. Drivers and others may suffer serious injury if a load moves or falls in transit. Driver and other road users may suffer injury when coupling and uncoupling trailers. Coaches, participants and members of the public could suffer injury when clients are carrying equipment to the location. Coaches and participants to wear suitable PPE including warm, waterproof clothing for cold, wet weather. Coaches and participants advised on the risks of heat from the sun and sunburn and advised to wear waterproof sunscreen in exposed areas. Ensure coaches and participants have had adequate fluid consumption before start of activity and to bring a supply for during the activity. Coaches and participants to undergo a suitable warm up. Wetsuits and PPE suitable for time of year. Activity length is suitable for time of year. Coaches to monitor participants conditions during activity. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED FIRE RISK AUDIT & ASSESMENT. During strong winds signage and tents are not used. Driver to ensure load is secure before departing. Drivers follow safe systems of work for coupling and uncoupling trailers, eg always ensuring that both trailer and Vehicle brakes are on and when possible use a second person for guidance. Driver to ensure safety chain is attached from trailer to vehicle. It is recommended that the driver use heavy duty gloves. Spray Oil to be used to ensure parts of trailer is moving freely. All equipment is carried in pairs (buddy system) one person at each end of the craft.

4 Existing conditions medical Losing sight of participant All club officers, coaches and participants Participants, especially young children may become lost causing them to become stressed or upset. Members with medical conditions club officers and coaches made aware of any medical history or conditions via the membership application. Ensure any required medication is taken in the dry bag or on participant in the case of self-medicating. Emphasis on group to stay together, Buddy system. Regular headcounts. Defined meeting place for lost clients. All Nipper (12 years and below) participants wearing club caps. Coaches keep line of site with all participants at all times when in the water. Medical ailments Club officers, coaches and participants. All club coaches are trained in first aid. Coaches to ensure that during every activity there is a: First aid kit Rescue device Methods of Communication Emergency Action Plan for both coaches & participants. Sea Conditions Dangerous sea conditions including surf, swell, wind, cold and pollution can cause illness, injury or drowning to both coaches and participants. All coaches to be aware of weekly and daily weather and swell forecast. Daily liaison with lifeguard service. Follow any advice from lifeguard service, HM Coastguard, Harbour Master and Environmental Health Officers. Coaches to monitor sea conditions prior to and during activity and if assessed as too dangerous cancel, change or abandon activity as appropriate. Coaches will verbally warn participants of incoming waves during activity. All coaches to hold a current first aid/beach lifeguard/surf lifesaving qualification and to be checked for validation yearly. surf life saving/surf coach lifesaving award and coached to be checked for validation yearly.

5 Tides Marine Stings Drowning Coaches and participants becoming cut of by the tide or entering water that is too deep or shallow due to the change in the shape of the beaches, coves and caves and also the change in the depth of the water as the tides change. Coaches and participants could be stung by a marine stinger (Weaver fish or jellyfish) Coaches and participants have a risk of drowning because of the nature of all the waterbased activities including falling, swept, entrapment, submersion and immersion in the water. Coaches to be aware of stage of tide and its affect at a particular location for the duration of the activity they are intending to be there and for time afterwards in case of delay in getting of the water. Prior planning and awareness from coaches. All participants will be training towards a competence award for the activity or a beach lifeguard/surf life saving award. Coaches and participants advised to wear wetsuits and wetsuit boots for all activities. All Coaches are trained in first aid. Medical history of coaches and participants reordered on membership application. In the case of a participant becoming stung, coaches to follow trained procedure for marine sting and enquire about allergies. All coaches and participants advised to wear a wetsuit. All participants will be training towards a competence award for the activity or a beach lifeguard/surf life saving award. surf life saving award/surf coach lifesaving award and hold the competence award for the activity being coached to be checked for validation yearly. All coaches to hold a current first aid/beach lifeguard qualification/surf life saving award and to be checked for validation yearly. surf life saving award/surf life saving coach award and hold the competence award for the activity being coached to be checked for validation yearly.

6 Impact Coaches and participants becoming injured from collision with other water users and equipment. All coaches and participants advised to wear a wetsuit. All participants will be aware of the designated flags area on the beach, all activities will take place outside of the red and yellow flags (swimming area) unless swimming and will take place in the black and white flags (surfing and surf craft) or a safe area outside of the black and white flags or as directed by the beach lifeguard service. Staff will verbally warn participants of incoming waves during activity. All participants will be training towards a competence award for the activity or a beach lifeguard/surf life saving award. surf life saving award/surf coach lifesaving award and hold the competence award for the activity being coached to be checked for validation yearly.
