1 SOC NEWS February Website: P: Paul Horner ph S: Sally Duston ph T: Sarah Kennedy ph All Things Mapping/Planning: Svend Pedersen ph Hi Everyone! Well, here we are post-waitangi Weekend and what a brilliant event it was with a new map at 12 Mile Delta, produced by Chris Forne, for the first day. We kicked off with superb blue skies and temperatures of which Southlanders were not accustomed and a good Chris Forne type challenge! Excellent to be navigating around new territory in Queen s Park you get to know where everything is
2 12 Mile Delta Sprint Medium Red Course Waikaia Long Distance Event Red Short Course Waikaia Medium Distance Event Red Short Course All gear packed and off to Waikaia for the next 2 days. It was excellent to be back on the Waikaia map after 10 years sentiments echoed by many - and special thanks go to Nick Smith and Matt Bixley for planning days 2 and 3. Just in case you are wondering what all the hype is about, here s an offering of maps one of about 8 courses on offer each day. You can see the intricate detail of the maps and just why so many people get bemused/pull out/opt for an easier course, sprain their ankles! Hats off to Nick Smith, the initiator of the Return to Waikaia and planner of Monday s Middle Distance courses which offered a slight respite for weary bodies. Really good to see the Checketts family from SOC take the plunge and enjoy orienteering at its best. From the SOC perspective, brilliant work by Svend with the computing side of things, plus trailer duties; Paul for porting the portaloos; Sarah for dealing with money issues and all those from SOC (22) who were there and helping out where needed thanks everybody for an inspiring event and if you want to see a few more photos, check out the SOC Facebook page
3 TODAY S EVENT AND OUR NEXT EVENT (besides the AGM) Great turnout today at Kew Bush for the first of our Summer Series events. Fifty-two people on 23 maps enjoying a good challenge (even for the old hands) in glorious weather. Check out the SOC Facebook page for a few photos and thanks for supporting the planners Our next event is at Goodwin Farm, Waitane, in the foothills of the Hokonuis. We are so lucky to be able to orienteer on this stunning property rolling farmland; bush; specimen native trees; great views. This is more real orienteering give it a go on SUNDAY 12 MARCH see you there. Don t forget, if you have problems getting there, give me a ring and I can help with transport Note: entry fees will be normal for this event reduced rates just for the Summer Series SOME THINGS COMING UP BLACK = SOC events RED = SOC Summer Series (short, sharp, fun events, $5 per map and estick for all) BLUE = Events outside Southland Date Event/Place Planner Comments Wed 8 March AGM Sport Southland 7pm Committee Bring dessert! There s a fun little site with a timed quiz see how you go! 6 This Summer Series I m going to try something different for SOC Scrabble Orienteering. So while I sort it out, brush up on your Scrabble techniques and obscure words! MATERIAL FROM OLD O SUITS AND O TOP SURVEY Out with the old in with the new! Shortly we will be sending out a short survey to see who is interested in an up dated O top for SOC; how much you want to pay and what design appeals there will be a choice of about 5. Meanwhile, we need a home for the remains of the old material there s even one suit already cut out, ready to sew. Let me know if you re interested in taking it away I have enough junk in my house already!
7 Sample of old O suit material And that s it for February! - Sally
