After a long road, all his perseverance finally resulted in two solo flights. As if one were not enough, he made two letter perfect landings in 89TA. Way to go, Chris! 2 And from the new solo pilot himself: Paul did a stupendous job of preparing me for the flights; I felt ready and the entire flights (I did two). I was very pleased to demonstrate two good, low-drama flights for Glenn, Willy, Paul and Dave. Buddy Denham, tow pilot, was rock solid on tows and helped get my two flights off to a great start. He gave me a really cool bit of feedback (paraphrased): You gave me a flying first: I was going to take you to a thermal; then you started boxing the wake! I ve not towed a solo student who did that on his first day of flying alone. Best quote came from Glenn during the preflight for Solo (again paraphrased): Just keep doing what you re doing Oh, and you should have no problems hearing the vario Paul s not going to be in the back seat talking your ear off!!! News Mandatory Glider Transponder Proposal From the SSA: The FAA will consider new safety requirements for certain aircraft known as gliders that do not have engines or motors. Gliders would be required to use transponders to identify their position in the air under the advance notice of proposed rulemaking from the FAA. Proponents of the rule say it would increase airspace safety. The rules come at the request of members of Congress following a collision between an airplane and a glider. 6 Upcoming Events Region 4 South Contest New Castle, VA September In September the Blue Ridge Soaring society will host its 33rd Annual Regional Contest. Due to the size of our facility we must limit our field to 42 entrants. The Classes will be: Standard, 15M and 18M. Contest dates are September 21 thru 26, with official practice day of Sept. 20. Please be sure to submit your application prior to the July 23 preferential deadline. 7 Club Racing News Rick Fuller The rain gods loosened their grip on the summer weather twice in July to allow at least some mediocre cross-country soaring. On July 19 th 9X and 5E showed us how to make the best of weak lift during the 2.5-hour Modified Assigned Task (MAT) by team flying up and down the Fairfield valley for 141 miles at a speed of just over 39 mph. The day saw two other pilots, BL and CL team land out at the Bowtie airport just southeast of Biglerville and just outside the start circle. Hot and steamy was the only way to describe the day. 9X leads the way into a thermal. Photo Erik Nelson. On July 25 th, the lift was incrementally better but died early in the afternoon during the MAT and caused four pilots to select widely scattered airports to end their competition day; DW landed at Five Lakes, CL at Keymar, 1I at Hanover and VV at York. Six landouts among eight flights in July is an accurate metric for the soaring conditions so far this year. Task Day scores are listed at 7 P a g e
