1 November 2006 October 2006 Rally Sunday the 15th. of October wasn't promising to be a very fine day. The day was down as a mow/fly day and come hell or high water that was what was going to happen. Mowing was the order of the day and plenty was done with both the ride on and the push along getting quite a work out. Even the occaisional spell of rain didn't stop some from completing the assigned task. Flemming and Henry were early arrivals with Flemming's new baby the Fruit Tingle and A BBQ was the reason worked was out quite stopped for a spell. Then it was soon getting back to the grind. his hours up. Through the afternoon when the Col was on hand with Arcady as Blowfly had some pulley and belt problems stemming from the ripper effort at Lake Cargelligo. Reece was solo for a change, the boys being either training for the Great Victorian Bike Ride or getting some sleep after working night shift. Tony M. also attended with his foster craft. Rachel made a visit with her beau in tow. He was given the hovercraft test, which he passed. task was looking pretty well knocked over we decided to do a round of the lake. Flemming took to this with quite some enthuesiasm and lead much of the way heading east. Things became a little confused when we got to the river but it all worked out in the end.

4 Hovercraft saved by hovercraft Nov By Liam Murphy Daily Post Staff NEW Brighton's lifeboat crew performed one of their most unusual rescues to date when they used a hovercraft to bring another hovercraft to shore yesterday. Two surveyors raised the alarm using a mobile phone after their private hovercraft broke down on the Mersey and drifted across to Eastham, at around 10.30am. The Royal National Lifeboat Institute launched a rescue hovercraft from the New Brighton station, just as the tide was beginning to go out. The crew took several minutes searching for the stranded craft, which had drifted with the tide since the distress call, made near Liverpool airport. It was rumoured the surveyors were examining the river as part of research into a possible second Runcorn bridge. Tony Clare, RNLI operations manager at New Brighton, said: "We received the call to say a hovercraft had broken down and drifted across to Eastham. "We launched the RNLI hovercraft as the tide was going out and it was going to be a difficult task to rescue the casualties using our inshore lifeboat." Hovercraft commander Graham Lowe of New Brighton RNLI, said it had been an unusual rescue but they and the pilot of the broken vessel had learned from the incident. He said: "Their hovercraft had been drifting for some time and the people on board were in quite significant danger because of their location. "They were taken to safety and the RNLI hovercraft and inshore lifeboat re launched later in the day to recover the vessel in a joint operation." Commander Lowe, who led the rescue team, said the pilot of the broken down craft had only a mobile phone to call for help and had taken some time to find after drifting from his initial position. He said: "We took the surveyors back ashore and brought out a mechanic but he was unable to repair it so we managed to tow it with our hovercraft and anchor it on a sandbank and then took the owner and the mechanic ashore.we returned later with the inshore lifeboat to tow it back to Liverpool for repairs." The 135,000 rescue hovercraft has been stationed at New Brighton's RNLI lifeboat station since late One of only five in the UK's RNLI fleet, it has helped crews respond quickly to emergencies throughout the North West. liammurphy@dailypost.co.uk
5 What is a Hovercraft? A Hovercraft (also known as an air cushion vehicle) is a machine that rides on a cushion of air. A fan provides lift air whilst propulsion is via a fan or propeller. They are fully amphibious and range in size from the 300 tonne giants that cross the English Channel to small single seat recreational craft. In the light Hovercraft category there is a variety of designs from family cruisers to high powered racing craft. Craft can be purchased ready to fly, constructed from kits or completely home built from plans. The Hovercraft's unique ability to skim over all types of surface provides the ingredients for a most exhilarating experience. The Hovercraft Club The Club consists of a group of hovering enthusiasts and represents a wide range of Hovercraft designs. The aim of the Club is to develop and promote the safe and friendly use of light Hovercraft for recreation and sport. Through its members, the Club has many years experience in the design and construction of small Hovercraft and so can provide advice on what to do (and what not to do!). The Club holds meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 8 pm, at the Community Arts Centre, 470 Station St, Box Hill. Meetings consist of; business, reports, organisation of Hoverin rallies, and regularly include videos and guest speakers. Contact Tony Westwood President on (03) for more information....
