2 Ft. Worden Kitemakers Conference 2016 Class Offerings **see our web site classes page for large color photos & additional photos of all projects** Robert Brasington Powers Train kite St. Helens, Tasmania, Australia #1, all day Friday Robert is returning this year with yet another wonderful kite project. The Powers Train gets favorable comments wherever it is flown and we are privileged to be the first kite workshop to offer the Powers kite as a class. Your kit will have everything prepared so it will be a relatively straight forward assembly project plus Robert will help demystify the handling and use of organza. The end result will be an elegant kite with flowing tails which has the potential of being a train of 3. Individual kites are 130 cm wide by 80 cm high with a 3 meter long tail, made from ripstop nylon, organza, carbon and fiberglass. Students may choose one to three kites in their kit and their desired colors. Red, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, white, black and gray will be the available options. Robert will contact students. Choices need to be made by 12/31. (Limited choices past that date.) Enjoy watching the tails dance in gentle winds while you fly an original design by Robert in this simple and stylish butterfly kite. Level: Intermediate and Experienced Class Size: 20 Fee: AUD$ for a single kite, AUD$ for 3 kites Conversion to US dollars in March, (Approximately US$65.00 and US$ in 10/2015. Note this may change!) Bring: Sewing machine and supplies* including black thread. Note: Extra kits will be available for purchase. Please see Robert outside of class if you do not enroll for the Powers Train kite class. Robert Brasington Electric Slim kite St. Helens, Tasmania, Australia #2, all day Saturday and Sunday morning Robert has been building and flying kites for 25 years, teaching many kitebuilding workshops including multiple classes for Ft. Worden Kitemakers Conference. Join Robert for a day and a half class in which you will make one of Robert's signature kites, the Electric Slim. Taught originally in Stuttgart, Germany in 2015, you will use appliqué techniques, hem, fold, sew and then assemble your very own Brasington-designed Electric Slim. The kite is a very pleasing and popular design; it flies in light winds and is reliable in upper medium winds as well due to the 3 dihedrals and long, long streamer tails. The kite has a wing span of 2.1 meters and is 1.45 meters tall. Robert will contact students for choice of color combinations. He needs this before 12/31. Options will be limited past that date. Level: Intermediate and Experienced Class Size: 20 Fee: AUD$ Conversion to US dollars in March, (Approximately US$95.00 in 10/2015. Note this may change!) Bring: Sewing machine and supplies* including black thread Note: Extra kits will be available for purchase. Please see Robert outside of class if you do not enroll for the Electric Slim kite class. * See page 10 for supply suggestions.

3 Carsten Domann Trigon Box kite Berlin, Germany #3, all day Friday Carsten also has 25 years of kitebuilding experience and we welcome him as one of several new teachers at our Conference this year. He brings a cellular kite, an original design called the Trigon Box. He published the plan in December 2013 as an online workshop. About 30 kites were built as a result. Carsten also presented the Trigon Box in a German workshop in Your kit will be custom made for you with your choice of color to contrast the black center design of each panel. All the choices are on our web page under the classes tab (Carsten will contact students). Utilize appliqué and edgebinding techniques plus a very clean and simple reinforcement method to end up with a spectacular box kite with a single tow point. This kite will garner you many comments on the kite field as you fly it in moderate winds. It stands about 4 feet (122 cm) tall. You can combine several (or many!) of the boxes into various configurations. Level: Intermediate and Experienced Class Size: 15 Fee: $70.00 Bring: Sewing machine and supplies* including black thread. A double fold bias tape binder will be helpful but is optional. Carsten will bring several Suisei A9S for students to purchase if desired. Note: Extra kits will be available for purchase. Please see Carsten outside of class if you do not enroll for the Trigon Box kite class. Mark Engbaum Westport, Washington Bridles and beyond alias Kitemakers' Round Table #15, Sunday morning Our ever popular Sunday morning Round Table is your opportunity to join in an open discussion focused on specific kitebuilding topics. In 2016, master kitebuilder Mark Engbaum will lead us through the intricacies of bridles to demystify this vital part of every kite. Learn the function, types and styles, how to adjust them, lots of tips you will use each time you put a kite into the air. Detangle that pile of line into functioning bridles! This will be a two-way conversation, not just a lecture, so if you have ideas or questions, we want you to speak up. As always, if you have another kite building conundrum, bring it along; chances are good that Mark and your companion attendees will have an idea or two to help solve your problem. Bringing samples and examples of your problem is definitely encouraged. Level: All Class Size: unlimited Fee: $0.00 Bring: Paper and pen for notes, samples, examples, problems, ideas. * See page 10 for supply suggestions.

4 Cat Gabrel Stillwater, Oklahoma Giant Train of kites #4, Saturday all day Cat is yet another long time kite builder with many classes taught worldwide, including Ft. Worden. She is a no-sew kite expert and this time brings us her plastic diamond kite train. A small kite made huge by sheer numbers! You have two design options: 1) all white, left plain or decorated at home prior to class with Sharpies and 2) a rainbow colored train decorated with the word dragon in Kanji. The rainbow train can be a set of either 60 or 70 diamonds. Cat will contact students. Materials are plastic skins, bamboo spars and tape. Saturday morning will be spent building your kites. Working with a friend is a great idea as you are building kites. There is an old adage many hands make for light work! Saturday afternoon is reserved for the assembly of your individual diamond kites into the train. Again, 2 or 3 people working together make the train assembly process smoother and quicker. On your own? That will work, too! Having a really long train in your kite bag is wonderful on light wind days. Become a train engineer! Trains are show stoppers and loved the world over. Join Cat for a day and leave the sewing to someone else! Level: All Class Size: 20 Fee: $66.00 for the white 60 kite train kit $58.00 for the Kanji Rainbow 60 kite train kit $62.00 for the Kanji Rainbow 70 kite train kit Bring: Bring your favorite tool for pressing down Scotch tape plus a good tape dispenser, if available, although tape will be provided in the kits. Also a smooth flat surface for taping (small cutting mat) would be nice to have. Dan Kurahashi Burnaby, BC, Canada Japanese Rokkaku kite #5, all day Friday and all day Saturday Do you need a really impressive wall hanging or an authentic Japanese seven foot tall paper kite to fly? Then we have the perfect class! Dan is our resident Japanese kitebuilder with over 50 years of kitemaking experience and he has been one of our teachers for 29 of 34 conferences plus he's taught at many other workshops. This year Dan is offering 3 sizes of traditional Japanese kite-paper Rokkaku skins made and painted in Shirone by a Japanese kite artist. Each kite skin is unique and you will be given your choice of design from those Dan has available in each size. Dan has a finite number of skins in each size. He will contact students for their size and design choice. The two days of class will be spent turning the kite skin into an actual kite. This includes using the proper techniques for finishing the skin and learning how to bridle the Shirone Rokkaku. Whether it be a kite to fly high in the sky or to adorn a wall, this is an opportunity to finish a true work of art with Dan as your expert instructor. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Either choice should be ready to fly by day's end and students will be contacted in advance for their choice. The telephone box will have 4 pre-marked panels; these need hot cutting to form all the windows. Only simple sewing and appliqué of preprinted panels will be needed. The Tardis/police box will have 4 pre-marked panels as well. More appliqué is required on this kite but no hot cutting. 10 Bob and Charmayne Umbowers Gig Harbor, Washington Jolly Roger kite #14, all day Saturday Last in our line-up of classes is our Logo kite. The Jolly Roger is a Top Flite design many of us remember flying during our childhood days. Small, made from paper with wood sticks, the Hi-Flier, Alox, and Top Flite kites were basically disposable due to their fragile nature and all those kite-eating trees we could not seem to avoid. Running with the kite and usually too much wind did not help either. Not the one Bob and Charmayne will be presenting! You will build a ripstop nylon and carbon spar diamond kite five feet wide and nearly 6 feet tall. The Jolly Roger will be edge bound and have 3.9 ounce Dacron reinforcements for durability and a dihedral to join the spreaders. After completing the kite, you will add the skull and crossbones design using reverse appliqué. As always Bob will be showing you methods you can use on future kites and Charmayne will show good edgebinding and appliqué techniques. Bob and Charmayne also stand with many of our other teachers with their quarter century of kite building experience and many years of teaching classes. Spend the day to make your classic but updated and modern Jolly Roger kite. This kite is always a wonderful kite in the sky whether you are flying kites by yourself or at a festival. Level: All Class Size: 15 Fee: $70.00 for kite and bag Bring: sewing machine and supplies* including black thread and small, pointed-tip scissors for appliqué *See page 10 for supply suggestions.

11 Attention, please! Aufmerksamkeit, bitte! Attenzione, per favore! Attention, S'il Vous Plaît! Important information which can help you! A few important notes: Look for actual photographs of the projects and updates on the web at Illustrations in this brochure are not to scale to each other. We want everyone to have a great experience. If you have questions about your ability to handle a class, please read our skill level ratings on the Skill Level Information Sheet. Our registrar will be happy to help you with class suggestions appropriate to your level. Just ask! Once you secure a place on a class list, you've committed to taking that class. In fairness to the instructor, it is expected that you will reimburse him or her for materials purchased and prepared for you, even if you don't participate in the class. Class materials fees must be paid for with cash (exact amount appreciated) at the start of class. Please, no checks. Are you wondering what "sewing machine and supplies" refers to? Here is some help... "Sewing machine" means a working, well-tuned sewing machine complete with foot control, power cord, needles and bobbins and bobbin case. It is, of course, best to be familiar with your machine. Spending a few evenings of learning and practice if you are a beginning sewer or have a new machine will be of great benefit to you come class time. Be sure to tuck your instruction book in with the machine. The 'don't leave home without it' rule is always a good one for instruction books! "Supplies" refers to the sewing related supplies we normally use at home when making a kite. Sewing your kite skin? Then these supplies can include extra machine needles, extra bobbins, a seam ripper, Scotch tape, double sided tape, needle threader, seam gauge, scissors for trimming threads, scissors for appliqué, beeswax, assorted colors of good thread plus black & white, etc. Before and after sewing, you may be happy to have brought a straight edge, cutting tools for fabric and rods and appropriate cutting surfaces, hot knife or hot pen, Super Glue and accelerant. Nearly every teacher has suggested we ask their students to bring high quality thread and a freestanding light. A pencil and notebook plus a camera are always good to have with you, too. So are an extension cord & multiple outlet strip. Does the description indicate a possibility of making copies of the instructor's templates? If so, bring a roll of wide paper to trace those templates. It is a wonderful opportunity to build another kite at home and not have to draft your own pattern. Is this the whole list; is this everything? NO! Do you have to bring absolutely everything listed here? NO! Bring what you use at home, what you think you may use, maybe even what you think you should leave at home. A special note for those participants who need to fly into Seattle... We know it is hard to bring all your supplies plus a sewing machine. Think about packing your supplies and borrowing a machine for the weekend. Many of us have spare machines. Ask us for help if this is the only reason you are not attending! Or come try us out and take the non-sewing classes we offer.
