2015 YEAR END REPORT AccesSurf Hawaii

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: AccesSurf Hawaii Contact Person: Cara Short Title: Executive Director Purpose of Grant: Adaptive Surf Clinics: To enhance the lives of people with physical disabilities by empowering them with skills and knowledge to surf independently Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. The purpose of this grant was to provide 8 adaptive surf clinics throughout the year for people with physical disabilities. The goal was to teach skills and techniques using adaptive surf equipment to enable the participants the ability to surf independently. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? AccesSurf provided a volunteer training specific for the adaptive surf clinics and one adaptive surf clinic. Due to lack of full funding we were not able to provide the desired 8 clinics. We will continue to search for additional funding via grants and corporate sponsors so can meet our goal of hosting multiple adaptive surf clinics throughout the year. There is a strong need for specific clinics and training to help people with disabilities who desire independence on the water to have the necessary skills and water and safety knowledge. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? With the assistance of the 2015 SIMA Humanitarian grant AccesSurf was able to train 20 volunteers with advanced skills to teach adaptive surfing. The training was run in

combination by physical therapists, experienced adaptive surfers, experience surfers and life guards. We provided one adaptive surf clinic hosting 15 people with disabilities. The participants who attended the clinic had significant improvements with personal confidence and water skills having the opportunity to try surfing independently in a safe environment. The results from the one clinic show us that this program is necessary and will be successful with the goal of empowering people with disabilities. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) This grant enabled us to pilot our adaptive surf clinic program with the necessary volunteer training and hosting one clinic. The volunteers who attended the training are now key lead volunteers assisting all of our programs utilizing their experience and knowledge to further enhance the participants experience and encourage those who desire independence on the water. This grant also assisted us with the ability to host our first adaptive surf clinic which was very successful and provided the experience necessary for us to establish the clinics as a regular program.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Best Day Foundation, Inc.

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Best Day Foundation, Inc. Contact Person: Brooks Lambert Title: Executive Director Purpose of Grant: Best Day currently has 4 active chapters serving the New Jersey/New York area, as well as Southern California ranging from San Diego to Santa Barbara. As a highly leveraged volunteer organization, almost all receipts are directed towards offsetting program costs which include, insurance, permits, equipment and supplies, maintenance, consumables, travel and training etc. We continue to expand in the areas served, the number of events held and children hosted. To better meet demand we are establishing an independent San Diego chapter, as well as Florida, Pacific Northwest, and possibly Virginia. In order to optimize our equipment, we have purchased a trailer to hold and transport our gear to support the East Coast chapters. The Florida chapter season is conveniently offset from our New Jersey/New York and Virginia chapters allowing us to keep our gear in use throughout more of the year. We will be purchasing and equipping another trailer to support our California expansion having 2 vehicles to hold and transport our gear for our 4 chapters serving Santa Barbara south to San Diego. Each of these vehicles contains all the needed equipment to host our Best Day at the Beach adventures; boards, wetsuits, PVDs, helmets, beach wheel chairs, etc. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. With increasing demand for our events and expanding our chapter reach we were running into scheduling conflicts limited by the amount of equipment we had and an ability to move that equipment from venue to venue. Being able to purchase a used 1997 Isuzu 20' box truck instead of the planned trailer we were able to meet the need of storing and transporting our gear even better since now we don't need to find a volunteer with a vehicle capable and the skills needed to tow a large trailer.

To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? We added the truck in time to serve 4 added events in our Santa Barbara chapter, 2 of these exclusively serving families in the military that have a child or young adult with special needs. As of the writing of this report we have 5 chapters serving Southern California from Santa Barbara to San Diego. These 5 chapters will be able to host somewhere between 30 and 40 events each season serving between 1200 to 1800 kids and young adults with special needs. This is accomplished with the support of our amazing volunteers who tell us their day volunteering with Best Day is their best day too! In fact many travel up and down the coast to volunteer at each of our events in our different chapter areas. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? Besides expanding to serve more people, we are able to provide life changing experiences for the kids we serve, their parents and our volunteers. We have so many stories from each of these groups. One girl with Autism who was very afraid of the water had a break through moment and realized she loved kayaking. Her family purchased a kayak and now go to the beach on a regular basis. We've had 3 nonverbal children speak for the first time at our events. We frequently hear from parents how the day at Best Day opened their child to taking on new challenges with a positive attitude, how it improved their self esteem, helped them to be more social, do better in school etc. We've also heard from parents how it opened their eyes to what was possible for their child. So much of their time is focusing on the special needs that they lost site of what's possible with the right support and opportunity such as Best Day made possible with the caring supportive volunteer base. And, we have story after story about how volunteering at Best Day prompted them to change a career direction, have removed a discomfort engaging with people with special needs, prompted them to volunteer at other organizations, and start supporting organizations/clubs at the local high school or college. Best Day brings a diverse group of people together to enjoy and appreciate nature, surf, and the power or working together to support one another to achieve amazing things, while having a blast doing so. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) This was answered in the response above. The ability to add the truck to our operating equipment will allow us to host more events in more areas serving and engaging more people for years to come. The addition of this truck will allow us to serve approximately kids and youth with special needs from LA to the Mexico boarder over the next 10 years.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC)

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) Contact Person: Lili Strasser Title: Marketing and Outreach Manager Purpose of Grant: With this year s grant, B4BC had 3 main objectives to focus on throughout the year: B4BC Membership Program The creation, introduction, and maintenance of B4BC s first-ever membership program. Surf and Cultural Expansion Aim to gain a larger presence in the surf community, engaging people in new areas and different cultures. Sustainability Strategy Seek to create a more sustainable footprint with all B4BC events, adopting the guidelines from Sustainable Surf Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. The B4BC Membership program aims to bring together a passionate group of humans that are dedicated to the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle as a means for breast cancer prevention. B4BC has never had a membership program in place but always has many inquiries. We seek to empower those who want to play a larger role in B4BC s mission and give people the tools to push our message out to a larger audience. After initial set-up, the membership acts as a fundraiser in and of itself. The expansion of B4BC s surf presence will allow our team to spread our message and knowledge to groups of people in areas we have never been able to reach before. Specifically, we aim to host a retreat or be a part of a pre-existing event on one of the Hawaiian Islands. This is a group of people who we have never been exposed to and who we feel will greatly benefit from our presence. Sustainability has always been a part of the B4BC mission, however we believe it is time to step up. We seek to erase our carbon-footprint all together, as a healthy environment equates to healthier human beings altogether and a reduced cancer risk.

We also want to spread our mission of sustainability to our audiences at each event as it relates to breast cancer prevention. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? Funding from SIMA was able to assist us with 2 of our 3 primary objectives this year. Our surf expansion was tabled for 2016 but we will pick up in We have recently added two new Hawaiian surf team members who we hope will encourage our presence in Hawaii in the coming seasons. Our biggest accomplishment was the creation of our sustainability program. We are happy to report that we have established a partnership with Association Community Carbon Trees, an organization based out of Costa Rica. ACCT offers solutions to deforestation and climate change by connecting local farmers with people all over the world. Why has B4BC chosen to work with ACCT in Costa Rica to offset our carbon footprint (Greenhouse Gas GHG) rather than choosing a location in the United States? Jenny Smith, director of the ACCT, and her team have been doing this work for 15 years and are dedicated to working with rural communities, especially women, with interactive education along the way. A single tree grown for 25 years within 10 degrees of the Equator will absorb tons of CO2, plus rebuild the soil. The difference is that tropical trees generate life-giving oxygen for all of us to breathe and rainforest trees create cooling clouds by recycling water vapor to lower global temperature. Evo-transpiration through trees near the Equator is critical for balancing the hydrological or rain/snow cycle and replenishing underground water reservoirs all over the planet. ACCT has earned Superstar status on respected philanthropic platform, GlobalGiving.org which provides receipts registered to US 501(c)3 status. With help from SIMA, we were able to bring Jenny out to join us at the Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, CA this past summer. Throughout the 4-day event, Jenny had a booth set up next to B4BC where together we talked about breast cancer prevention and the role the environment plays in keeping us healthy. We encouraged people to sponsor trees to help set off their carbon footprint. In addition, Jenny hosted a sustainability talk at the event where people could learn more in-depth details about the environment, how it affects us, and what we can do to help. We look forward to continuing our work with Jenny and ACCT in the years to come. In October, B4BC had a soft launch of our membership program, the B4BC Brigade, at our 20th Anniversary celebration. This soft launch was an in-person only way to sign up for the program to gage interest and allow attendees the first chance to join the brigade. Due to B4BC s previous bylaws, we were unable to be a membership-driven organization. After lots of work in 2016, our bylaws have been updated and we are now

able to hold membership drives and have our own membership program. In 2017, we are excited to launch our online membership platform. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? Thanks to our 2015 grant, we were able to showcase our sustainability mission in front of over 60,000 attendees at the 2016 Supergirl pro. A handful of these attendees even sponsored trees in Costa Rica which helps serve those across the world. Although we don t have an exact number of those we impacted, the awareness absolutely increased and it was rewarding to see the number of young people who were influenced and inspired by Jenny and the mission of ACCT. We hope these young minds take action in the years to come to help our environment and reduce the communities risk for cancer and other sicknesses. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) ACCT has helped B4BC offset our own carbon footprint throughout the entire year. We recruit ACCT to calculate the number of trees needed to offset B4BC s emissions from travel. We now have our own small B4BC area in the Costa Rican rainforest! Through this newly established partnership, we are now able to practice what we preach. We are thrilled that we can now offset the negative impact we have on the environment due to our traveling education booth. It is vital that we travel throughout the year to speak to and educate as many people as possible. For years, we have felt guilty about the amount of pollution we are contributing but now we believe we have found a solid solution that helps us spread our mission more effectively. We hope others follow in our footsteps and utilize this model for their own organizations and companies.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Boys to Men Mentoring Network, Inc.

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Boys to Men Mentoring Network, Inc. Contact Person: Craig McClain Title: Executive Director Purpose of Grant: Boys to Men s goal was to expand the Boys to Men Summer Surf Nights Program from high risk boys to serve 16 boys at each event or 96 boys over 6 summer nights. Funds provided boys who are at risk of educational failure to experience surfing for the FIRST time. Many of the boys in our groups have never been to the beach, despite living in San Diego, much less had any exposure to the sport of surfing and the brotherhood surfers develop in and out of the water together. Boys to Men's Surf Nights brought fatherless and high-risk teenage boys to experience a new sport, lifestyle, the power and beauty of the ocean, nature, meet and engage with caring male mentors, see their life with a different lens and give them hope for a better quality of life. Nights were held twice monthly on alternating weeks from our summer mentoring group meetings, therefore providing continued support for the boys when school is out for the summer. Boys to Men provides the equipment such as surfboards and wetsuits, and transportation. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. The purpose of the Boys to Men Surf Nights Project is: 1. To expand the number of participants from to middle school and high school fatherless and high-risk teenage boys. BTM aims to give high-risk boys the opportunity to be in a new environment and learn to surf while engaging with new male mentors 2. Provide positive male role models in an environment where boys may be more open and mentors can break through boys emotional barriers 3. Help our boys to overcome their fears and face their personal challenges through the brotherhood created while surfing.

To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? The Boys to Men Surf Nights Project achieved the following goals: to 1. Expanded the number of participants from 16 to 96 high risk boys (60 boys above our goal!). 2. Taught surfing basics and engaged 96 middle school and high school fatherless and high-risk teenagers; 2. Provide positive male role models for 96 boys in an environment where boys were more open and mentors can break through boys emotional barriers. 3. Helped 96 boys to overcome their fears and face their personal challenges (emotional and physical) through the brotherhood created while surfing. 4. Engaged 96 boys through the Surf Nights Project to learn surfing and now seek to surf on their own, have a new outlook on their lives, learn resiliency, participate in a healthy activity and start their new school year with a better attitude. SIMA Humanitarian Funds were used to host a minimum of 6 Summer Surf Nights throughout the summer for 96 boys and mentors to bond with each other, transport the boys to and from the beach, provide Boys to Men staff to coordinate and supervise the Surf Nights and recruit additional experienced surfing male volunteers to teach the boys how to surf. Funds were also used to recruit school mentor volunteers to assist with transporting the boys, cooking at the Surf Night barbecue, set up, clean up, etc. We thank SIMA Humanitarian Fund which helped inspire the donation of two more new wet suits and eight new surfboards. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? Boys to Men Summer Surfing Project has had the following measurable impacts on the 96 high risk boys we served through this project: 1. Exposed 96 high risk boys from low social economic communities to surfing who would not have had an opportunity or interest in surfing without this program which was measured through BTM attendance records; 2. Provided 96 boys with all the tools/equipment (wetsuits, surfboards, transportation and meals) to learn new skills and 20% of the boys continue to pursue surfing beyond Surf Nights; our measured results were tracked by informal engagements with participating boys. 3. All of the 96 boys continue to participate in the BTM Mentoring program, measured with BTM attendance records. 4. We are very proud to report that 96 of the boys continue to attend school and none of the boys have dropped out of school; this was measured with school records and tracking boys in BTM s Mentoring program high risk boys met and interacted with at least 40 male role models and have a better outlook on their school year which was measured through informal interactions boys did not display delinquent behaviors during interactions or during the

program and none of the boys self-reported any delinquent behaviors as measured through informal interactions with boys. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) We are pleased to have partnered with SIMA Humanitarian Fund and grateful for the Fund s support to help Boys to Men expand its Summer Night Surf Program and increase our capacity. We invite the Fund to take pride in the accomplishments and the positive impact we have had on the lives of 96 boys by providing a community of caring mentors, exposing them to the beauty of nature and the love of surfing, gaining new skills, becoming more resilient and to see their lives with a new perspective.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Contact Person: Drew Hoyer Title: Associate Executive Director Purpose of Grant: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Orange County Chapter launched its Pipeline to a Cure campaign and later, its National SUP Day campaign after learning about the direct therapeutic benefits the ocean offers individuals with cystic fibrosis. Specifically, the purpose of the SIMA grant is to introduce individuals with CF and their families and friends to the ocean and sport of stand up paddling (SUP) as well as raise funds and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. With this mission in mind, National SUP Day was born and serves as a sustainable platform to connect our local CF community to the ocean, surfing and SUP. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. This comprehensive campaign targets three main objectives: a. Give individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families and friends the opportunity to learn to SUP, which, in turn, introduces them to a sport that provides a therapeutic benefit and useful tool to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. b. Raise funds for life-saving cystic fibrosis research through our National SUP Day and other SUP events, as well as the Pipeline to a Cure event. c. Expand the National SUP Day campaign to nine markets nationwide. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? A. Give individuals with cystic fibrosis and their families and friends the opportunity to learn to SUP, which, in turn, introduces them to a sport that provides a therapeutic benefit and useful tool to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. We continue to meet this goal with ease buy bringing in new CF families to the event and introducing them to

SUP. Each year we have new families show up to participate which helps us reach families that are not involved with our chapter. The Newport Aquatic Center continually updates us when our families come back for more SUP time and the best part is because of our relationship with them they give our families free rentals! Our parents are especially happy with the way SUP makes exercise fun and something their kids look forward to doing. B. Raising funds and awareness through the Pipeline to a Cure Gala and National SUP Day presented by NEXT Swimwear. This year we saw another large increase in net revenue raised by the Pipeline to a Cure campaign and our awareness continues to build across the nation. We now have a new group in Duluth MN looking to build out a SUP day on Lake Superior for As we reach out tenth anniversary more and more people come to us to model the National SUP Day event with their cystic Fibrosis chapter or in the case of the Duluth MN event they are a local family creating the event. C. Expand the National SUP Day campaign to nine markets nationwide. This year's event saw a decline in the number of locations around the country as we re-examined our relationship with NEXT Swimwear and their goals for national marketing of their product. NEXT has updated their marketing plan to focus more on social influencers to talk about their product in a more organic way. This in turn presented us with some challenges but also opportunities. For instance, NEXT brought 3 of their influencers to National SUP Day and between the three of them we were able to generate over 100,000 unique views of their stories from the event. This was a major win for us from an awareness standpoint. But on the other hand because the marketing budget and plan shifted we lost our ability to have their vendors around the country sponsor and hold the SUP Day events. We are currently working to reinvigorate our national footprint and make this a chapter run event which would open us up to a much larger audience. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? The impact that the grant has had on the area we serve is very apparent; the event has attracted corporate sponsors such as NEXT Swimwear, Quickblade, Kaenon, REI and NSP. This is in large part due to the fact that the event draws people who do not have a direct connection to CF but love to SUP. Additionally, for those with CF and their families and friends, National SUP Day gives them a safe, controlled environment to learn the amazing sport of SUP all while inhaling salty, ocean air that helps clear out their lungs. We also measure the number of new families that get involved with us because of this event, many of whom were not involved for most of their life and now they are excited about working with us! Through our relationship with the Newport Aquatic Center, and with the generous funds from SIMA, we are able to hold other SUP clinics/events multiple times throughout the year. For example, in 2015, NAC hosted its second annual Get Off da Couch in memory of the great Sam Couch, a CF Ambassador and local legendary waterman. We also saw a large increase in our social media reach and unique views

thanks to the NEXT Swimwear social ambassadors and the stories the wrote after the event. Overall, more and more individuals with CF are learning how to SUP and benefitting from the therapeutic benefits of breathing in ocean air while exercising. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) From its inception in 2012 National SUP Day has grown way past our initial goals of awareness built, families served and money raised. This year marks the first time in the history of the CF Foundation that half of the cystic fibrosis population is over the age of 18. Because of this amazing statistic the foundation has had to modify its mission to include providing all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care. This has brought a new interest in family focused events such as National SUP Day that promote healthy living, and we are hopeful that the platform that has been built with the help of the SIMA Humanitarian Grant will allow us to spread our event Nationwide. This is our ultimate dream that each chapter would have a version of the National SUP Day in their area. Measurably, in 2012, National SUP Day occurred in one market; in 2013, we had National SUP day in 6 markets and sustained these events through Our goal was to reach nine markets in Our new goal is focused on building our event out on a National scale with the help of our chapters. This is a tangible representation of how the SIMA Environmental Fund grant has impacted the CF community across the country.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation Contact Person: Jeff Miller Title: President Purpose of Grant: The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation (JMMF) had requested a grant from the SIMA Humanitarian Fund to further support our unique Ocean Therapy program, which serves Wounded Warriors of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base, Veterans from the Los Angeles V.A. and underprivileged youth from the Los Angeles area. Our program has held steady holding more than 40 sessions and events per year, which poses the need to replace a large amount of our day to day equipment as well as to expand to offer some additional water based activities such as paddle boarding and Stand Up Paddling along with our surfing program. With new and more equipment, we will be able to continue our longstanding tradition of providing therapeutic programs, which serve to improve the quality of life, mental and physical health, and welfare of these deserving populations. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. The specific purpose of our 2015 SIMA grant was to expand our board sport activities offered such as stand up paddling and prone paddling, as well as to replace well used surfboards and wetsuits which serve close to 500 participants annually. By supporting our equipment needs, SIMA funds will directly support our goals of maintaining our close to 40 sessions per year, serving our populations with the best equipment offered and to provide well rounded instruction in all board sport activities available to our participants. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project?

With SIMA support, we were able to purchase new and varied equipment to meet the needs of our expanding programs and board sport activities offered. With Ocean Therapy sessions occurring year round and in a variety of conditions, there is a constant need to replace equipment. We were able to purchase 4 new surfboards, 1 stand up paddleboard and the remaining funds were applied to purchasing wetsuits in larger sizes for our military programs. Our proposed goals and objectives were achieved. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? With new and varied equipment, we have been able to better serve and maintain our programming for the close to 40 sessions we conduct annually. With an average of participants per session, we have served close to 400 participants in New equipment adds to the safety and professionalism of our programs. Offering stand up paddling and prone paddling provides a well-rounded experience for our participants in accessing all of the benefits the ocean and board sport activities can offer. At Camp Pendleton, some of the Marines have vestibular deficits that affect their ability to stand up while moving on a wave. In the lagoon, adjacent to Del Mar Jetty, these Marines are able to work on their balance and vestibular skills while paddling on a flat surface. One particular veteran would stand up paddle regularly with her therapy dog at the bow of her board. She stated she felt, free and at peace while out on the SUP. Some of our youth participants have stated that surfing provides them, a new fun activity I didn t think I could do. My instructor made feel like I could do anything. These candid remarks demonstrate the life changing impact surfing and the JMMF can have on the individuals that choose to participate and these experiences would not be provided without the support from SIMA. Additional impact can be found in the long-lasting relationships the JMMF has with their participating organizations. Since the foundation s inception, Hollygrove, an EMQ FamiliesFirst organization began sessions with us in 2005 and continues today attending 3 sessions in the summer months. Our programs on base at Camp Pendleton began in 2006 and continue today year round. Each organization recruited to participate has maintained their relationship with the JMMF, which has brought our partnerships to 15 organizations serving Veterans, active duty Marines and children with high need backgrounds. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) In 2015 and over the last 10 years the JMMF has been a beneficiary of SIMA funds, the JMMF has had the opportunity to enhance their professional staff, increase their cadre of equipment and board sport activities offered, as well as to continue to grow our programs to meet the needs of close to 400 participants annually. SIMA grant funding has created measurable progress in our enhanced JMMF Ocean Therapy operations. Our exceptional staff is the backbone of our operations and by expanding the staff and

sustaining the highest standards in qualifications, we maintain our status as one of the most qualified surf therapy programs in the world. Some Additional Notes We have had great support from the surf industry including volunteers from brands such as Body Glove, Global Surf Industries, JS Surfboards, Fox, Rip Curl, O Neill, Spy and Volcom. Pro surfer volunteers include Kelly Slater, Damien Hobgood, Bede Durbidge Taylor Knox, Roy Powers, Timmy Reyes, Alex Gray, Sunny Garcia, Jamie O Brien, Mike Losness and Cheyne Magnusson.

2015 YEAR END REPORT John Wayne Cancer Foundation

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: John Wayne Cancer Foundation Contact Person: Lauren Fraga Title: Program Director Purpose of Grant: The funds requested from the 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund were used to fund John Wayne Cancer Foundation s Block the Blaze youth skin cancer education program for California junior lifeguard board sport athletes, and to expand this program to junior lifeguard board sport athletes in other states. Educating kids about the sun improves quality of life because sun exposure is cumulative and the sooner they start sun safe habits the better off they will be. Surfers and board sport athletes are at the highest risk for skin cancer. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. Our goal in 2016 was to expand Block the Blaze to junior lifeguard board sport athletes and other water sport youth nationally. Block the Blaze expanded into junior lifeguard programs in 7 additional states: NJ, SC, TX, FL, VA, NY, DE. Block the Blaze educated over 26,000 junior lifeguards in the summer of To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? Block the Blaze met the goals we had set out to meet. The grant from the SIMA Humanitarian Fund allowed Block the Blaze to educate 269 out of the over 26,000 youth in summer What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve?

The SIMA grant was the first outside funding source for our program. With that in mind, we have been able to leverage SIMA s support to obtain both funding and expansion partnerships from other organizations. The result is more youth educated not only in California, but nationally. Overall during calendar year 2016, our growth of the program was 33%. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) The total amount of youth educated has increased, and the program has been able to expand into other states besides California. Although skin cancer affects 1 in 3 Californians, it affects 1 in 5 Americans, so it isn t just coastal states that need education. Block the Blaze will continue to move forward in reaching our vision of families living cancer free, and appreciate the financial support of SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant in helping us achieve this vision.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Life Rolls On Foundation

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Life Rolls On Foundation Contact Person: Jesse Billauer Title: Executive Director Purpose of Grant: To help us get the necessary equipment for our Quality of Life programs. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. Purchase a beach wheelchair to help us transport our adaptive athletes along the sand down to the waters edge so they can be transferred onto an adaptive surfboard and catch some waves. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? We achieved our goal with this grant 100% What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? Having these beach wheelchairs is very important because it makes it safer for not only the adaptive athletes but for the volunteers who need to transfer them to and from their everyday chairs to the waters edge. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) We have increased participation because we can lower the transfer time and transport time allowing more people with various disabilities a chance to catch waves.

2015 YEAR END REPORT Mauli Ola Foundation

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Mauli Ola Foundation Contact Person: Hans Hagen Title: Director of Development Purpose of Grant: To help fund At the our mission to introduce surfing and other ocean activities to children and young adults living with genetic (inheritable) diseases as a natural therapy. We accomplish our goal by sharing our ocean skills, family values, community, and love of our environment through surfing and ocean based activities. MOF also is into it's 4th Annual Battle For The Breasts awareness/ give back campaign for breast cancer. 33 2015 YEAR END REPORT Outdoor Outreach

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: Outdoor Outreach Contact Person: Mallory Thorne Title: Director of Development Purpose of Grant: Outdoor Outreach received a generous grant to provide positive opportunities and supports for vulnerable youth through surf programs that help them overcome risk factors to become healthy, happy, successful adults. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. Outdoor Outreach requested funding to support 40 surf outings including 6 overnight surf camps that would open the outdoors to 500 individual teens to learn, lead and grow through surfing. Our goals were to use after-school, weekend and summer surf camps to provide underserved and at-risk youth with the support, relationships, resources and opportunities they need to become successful adults and conscientious outdoor enthusiasts. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? Over the impact period, Outdoor Outreach provided 37 total surf camps connecting youth from lowincome, park-poor communities to close-to-home beaches including Silver Strand State Beach, Coronado Shores, Coronado Central Beach, and Imperial Beach. While the number of surf camps fell slightly short of the total proposed programs, Outdoor Outreach was able to provide 7 overnight surf camps -- more than the number of overnight trips proposed. These programs provide a deeper level of engagement with participants as well as a camping experience that, for many participants, is their first time ever setting up a tent or sleeping under the stars. In total, Outdoor Outreach served 313 individual youth, providing a space to build positive relationships with peers and mentors; opportunities for participants to be physically active; and the skills, competencies and coping strategies teens need to be stronger, healthier and more resilient. Our partners included 10 Title I middle and high schools (that is, schools in low-income neighborhoods receiving federal and state funds to meet the needs of disadvantaged students); and 7 nonprofit social service and other youth serving organizations across San Diego County. With support from the SIMA Humanitarian Fund, Outdoor Outreach was able to provide meaningful surf programs for schools and residential programs for foster youth, homeless youth and youth involved in the juvenile justice system. While we fell short of the proposed number of youth served, Outdoor Outreach provided 426 user days at the beach for underserved and at-risk youth, including multiple trips for some participants as well as multi-day programs.

In 2017, Outdoor Outreach s goal is to maintain the current level of surf programming while also increasing our offering of other board and watersports programming. Outdoor Outreach began offering SUP programs in 2012, and since acquiring 14 SUP boards in 2014, has grown our SUP programming from 2 programs to more than 30 programs annually. Furthermore, Outdoor Outreach acquired our first kayak fleet in 2016, and has doubled our kayak programming to more than 50 programs each year. Outdoor Outreach continues to prioritize providing coastal access for urban and diverse youth through surfing as well as kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? In surveys, Outdoor Outreach participants identified significant barriers to spending more time in the outdoors: 77% of participants responded they lack transportation; 54% responded their families do not support spending time outside; 39% responded there are no green spaces like parks or beaches near their homes; and 15% responded that gangs or crime make close-to-home recreation areas unsafe. In addition, 11% described not having adults they could trust in their life, 12% felt like they didn t fit in at school, 16% did not feel optimistic about the future, and 6% doubted their ability to succeed. As a result of Outdoor Outreach programs, participants were more motivated to try new and different things, more likely to plan and set goals for their future, and better able to solve problems in a positive manner. Furthermore, students felt more comfortable speaking in front of a group, and on average, respondents appreciated their ability to make positive changes in their life. By introducing protective factors like self-efficacy, social competencies and optimism for the future, Outdoor Outreach is helping prevent adolescent risk behaviors like drugs, delinquency and gang involvement. By forging a positive connection between each individual youth and the natural environment, Outdoor Outreach is also helping inspire young people to give back to their communities by protecting the ocean, beaches and coastal areas where they play and learn. Through the surf program, participants learn the importance of San Diego County s sensitive ocean and coastal ecosystems, and are trained to act as environmental stewards through lessons on Leave No Trace Ethics and stormwater pollution prevention. In post-trip surveys administered to program participants, 91% of respondents reported an increased appreciation of nature and being outdoors, and 95% reported that protecting the environment was important or extremely important to them personally. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) Outdoor Outreach s Leadership Program provides access to employment in communities where more than 40% of young adults ages are unemployed. The program equips young adults with transferable skills and competencies to overcome economic insecurity, connecting them to positive opportunities and supports that make them less likely to experience poor health, lower incomes, unemployment, and incarceration as adults. Leadership program graduates are then eligible for paid instructor positions at Outdoor Outreach, creating pathways to self-sufficiency. Indeed, Leadership Program graduates served as paid instructors on 16 surf trips over the impact period, or more than 40% of Outdoor Outreach s surf programs. In their roles as instructors and role models, Leadership Program graduates have the chance to provide the same positive opportunities

and supports for other young people through surfing, forming positive natural mentoring relationships that are an important protective factor for at-risk youth. The Leadership Program also engaged urban and diverse youth as advocates to preserve and protect access to the beach and coastal areas where they recreate. In March 2016 Leadership Program graduate Vincent Culliver, whose family has been impacted by homelessness, had the opportunity to participate in the 11th Annual Ocean Day in Sacramento, meeting with legislators and other stakeholders about barriers to coastal access. Through civic engagement opportunities, Leadership Program graduates are empowered as voices for change in their communities, building community support for key policies and funding that preserve and protect outdoor access for future generations. By 2019, our goal is to graduate 30 young adults from the Leadership Program each year with the job and life skills they need to become outdoor educators and civic-minded community leaders; employing 80% of new graduates as instructors-in-training at Outdoor Outreach. Finally, Outdoor Outreach was able to leverage the SIMA Humanitarian Fund s support to secure more in additional funding for our surf programs from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, California State Parks, and private foundations. Together through collaborative philanthropy, our surf program funders were able to have a much greater impact for San Diego youth than any one organization could have had alone.

2015 YEAR END REPORT STOKED Mentoring, Inc. (STOKED)

2015 SIMA HUMANITARIAN FUND YEAR END REPORT Organization: STOKED Mentoring, Inc. (STOKED) Contact Person: Constance Beverley Title: Director of Development Purpose of Grant: STOKED sought a SIMA Grant to fund our Surf Mentor Program in NY and LA. The purpose of the STOKED Surf Mentor program was and is, over 6 weeks, to teach at-risk youth how to surf and the values associated with the surfing lifestyle. Briefly describe the specific purpose and goal for your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant. With the generous grant from SIMA, STOKED endeavored to take 300 youth surfing through our innovative Surf Mentor Program, from May through September, in New York and Los Angeles. Our goal was to not only teach these youth to surf, but to also teach them life skills, from positivity, patience, trust, and respect, to environmental awareness. Prior to launching Surf Mentor in May, we reevaluated our summer initiatives based on student/mentor/parent feedback and increased the number of mentors participating and decreased the number of students participating to ensure a more 1 to 1 relationship and more water time for participants. To what degree were these goals and objectives achieved? If not fully met, what factors affected the success of the project? Prior to launching Surf Mentor in May, we reevaluated our summer initiatives based on student, mentor, and parent feedback. The resounding request was more 1-on-1 instruction, more time in the water, and more opportunities for skill progression. As a result, we increased the number of mentors participating and decreased the number of students participating to ensure (1) a 1 to 1 mentor/participant ratio, and

(2) more water time for participants. With these goals in mind, we took approximately 100 youth surfing this year, and recruited additional, more surf experienced mentors. As compared to previous years, participants spent almost double the amount of the time in the water and progressed significantly in their surf skills. At the end of surf mentor this year, we found that our youth felt significantly more comfortable in the water, and and had higher attendance rates than previous years. As a result, in the future, we plan to tailor the growth of the Surf Mentor program to maintain these successful mentor/participant ratios. What has been the measurable impact of your 2015 SIMA Humanitarian Fund grant on the population or area you serve? Thanks to SIMA, in 2015, 100 youth lives were enriched by surfing, 25% of our youth learned to swim because of Surf Mentor, and 100% of our youth knew how to swim and were certified water ready prior to the start of the Surf Mentor program. In addition to pre-program swim training, STOKED provided 6 full Surf Mentor program days in Los Angeles, and 6 days in New York. Each program day covered a different topic, for e.g. goal-setting, or overcoming obstacles. This year, of our Students: 100% demonstrated resiliency 100% learned to manage their time better 98% feel more confident when presenting themselves 98% had fun with and learned a lot from their mentors 98% met positive role models 93% overcame their fears 83% overcame obstacles 70% are better at goal setting Testimonials: I learned that it is imperative to face your fears. As you tackle your toughest obstacles, you become more confident, intrepid, a braver person. I have no words to describe the great experience I had in STOKED this year. I feel part of a family here. What have been the measurable results to date of this grant on the functioning or effectiveness of your organization? (i.e. enhanced operations, increased capacity, etc.) The Grant has allowed STOKED to increase the quality of our programs. Each year, the Surf Mentor Program has grown, either in participant numbers or program depth, as a direct result of funding transportation, equipment and/or hiring additional instructors and lifeguards. Moreover, the interest of our participants in surf culture has lead to additional programming and environmental awareness, to include Saturday
