INTRODUCTION MAKING the MOST of YOUR HAWAIIAN DREAM HAWAII. HEAR THE WORD, and you re swept away by dreams of a tropical Eden, sensual swaying hula dancers, and visions of an endless, empty beach. Can this place really be as magical as it seems? Or is it just an illusion? The right answers to those questions are yes and no, respectively. The tropical Eden is for real, hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian culture, and empty beaches stretch for miles on all the smaller islands. And volcanoes are still making Big Island beaches even more magical. This is, in all ways, a very special destination. But it s more than a pretty place; it s an experience that can change your life, and that has to do with the people and their way of living. The lighthearted island attitudes, the warmth of people who go out of their way for you, and the sense of extended family soon begin to melt even the most resolute holdouts. Your stakes are huge in making the most of your visit to the Islands. If you get Hawaii right, the place will grab you by the heart and make you feel good. The best way to enjoy it is to loosen up and let Hawaii happen to you. Approach Hawaii like you would another country, which it was not so long ago. Be prepared for exotic customs, serendipity, and unexpected disruptions of your plans. Be a good sport. Brief yourself by reading this book, prowling the Internet, and talking to friends. For those who come to the Islands with advance knowledge and plenty of patience, delightful encounters are bound to happen. Bring your children and elders. They ll have a good time, and the people of Hawaii cherish keiki (kids) and kupuna (wise older folks). In Waikiki, don t expect idyllic huts by the sea (although you can find them elsewhere on the Islands). Expect high-rise hotels in an

2 INTRODUCTION urban cityscape. Expect hustling on the sidewalks, although it s quite tame by big-city standards (most Waikiki hustlers want to hand you an ad). Don t expect to be met with a lei of flowers at the airport unless you have already paid for the greeting service or are being met by a friend who lives in the Islands. Brace yourself for hugs and kisses on the cheek when you meet effusive strangers, if you re lucky. Hawaii is one of the world s safer destinations, but don t be surprised if your wallet and camera are pilfered when you leave them on the seat of a rental car while you run to look at a mesmerizing view. Strip away the veil of Hawaii s natural beauty and you ll find many of the same problems that burden other American communities: economic struggles, drugs, increasing crime, and traffic congestion. But you ll also find people who still smile at strangers and largely rely on kindness, respect, and humor when dealing with one another. You ll discover skies that are blue rather than gray, seawater that is clear and warm, air that is soft and fresh, and scenery that soothes the soul. A visit to Hawaii is too precious to waste. So we re here to help you pursue your dream and along the way find some unexpected memorable experiences. Our purpose is to present a realistic view of contemporary Hawaii that helps you make the most of your Island holiday. We ll provide some of the details in advance, so that you ll be free to have fun. In this guide you ll discover how to find the best deals on lodging, whether you want hotels, condominiums, or bed-and-breakfasts. You ll get an up-to-date review of the best adventures, attractions, beaches, hotels, clubs, and restaurants. And you ll gain insights into local customs and learn a few Hawaiian words and phrases to make you feel more like a kamaaina ( child of the land, a longtime or native-born Hawaii resident). Along the way, we ll answer frequently asked questions like these: When is the best time to go? Which islands should we visit? Where are the best beaches? What hiking trails are recommended for families? Who are Hawaii s must-see entertainers? You want to make the most of your time in the Islands. You want to be at the right place at the right time, enjoying the very best Hawaii has to offer, especially if it is your first trip. This book will help you. For those of you who have been to the Aloha State many times before and are ready to dig deeper, this book will suggest new possibilities. You may find a new discovery. So mix up a mai tai, put on your favorite Hawaiian music, and start your Hawaiian adventure with The Unofficial Guide to Hawaii. E komo mai! Welcome.

ABOUT This GUIDE WHY UNOFFICIAL? ABOUT THIS GUIDE 3 JUST AS HAWAII INSIRES UNCONVENTIONAL IDEALS and promotes individuality, so does the Unofficial Guides series. Most official guides to Hawaii tout the well-known sights, promote the local restaurants and hotels indiscriminately, and leave out the nitty-gritty. This one is different. We ll be up-front with you. Instead of nabbing you by the ankles in a tourist trap, we ll tell you if it s not worth the wait for the mediocre food served at a well-known restaurant. We ll complain loudly about overpriced hotel rooms that aren t convenient, and we ll guide you away from the crowds and congestion for a break now and then. If a museum is boring or a major attraction is overrated, we say so and, in the process, make your visit exactly that: your visit. We got into the guidebook business because we were unhappy with the way travel guides make the reader work to get any usable information. Wouldn t it be nice, we thought, if we made guides that were easy to use? OTHER GUIDEBOOKS MOST GUIDEBOOKS ARE COMILATIONS OF LISTS. This is true regardless of whether the information is presented in list form or artfully distributed through pages of prose. There is insufficient detail in a list, and with prose the presentation can be tedious and contain large helpings of nonessential or marginally useful information. Not enough wheat, so to speak, for nourishment in one instance, and too much chaff in the other. Either way, other guides provide little more than departure points from which readers initiate their own quests. Sure, many guides are readable and well researched, but they tend to be difficult to use. To select a hotel, for example, a reader must study several pages of descriptions with only the names of the hotels in bold type breaking up the text. Because each description essentially deals with the same variables, it is difficult to recall what was said concerning a particular hotel. Readers generally have no alternative but to work through all the write-ups before beginning to narrow their choices. The presentation of restaurants, clubs, and attractions is similar except that even more reading is usually required. To use such a guide is to undertake an exhaustive research process that requires examining nearly as many options and possibilities as starting from scratch. Recommendations, if any, lack depth and conviction. By failing to narrow travelers choices down to a thoughtfully considered, well-distilled, and manageable few, these guides compound rather than solve problems.

4 INTRODUCTION HOW UNOFFICIAL GUIDES ARE DIFFERENT SOME HAWAII GUIDEBOOKS are full of pretty pictures. Others present a tedious stream of words with little practical advice. Many Hawaii guidebooks lead you only to a sugarcoated version of the Islands, but this book strives to be different. Our goal at Unofficial Guides is to help you make informed decisions about topics like this: Anyone can find the Bishop Museum, but when is the best time to go? How much walking is involved? Is the museum really worth the price of admission? Hawaii offers more to do and see than you could pack into a lifetime of vacations. If you have only a week or two and just want to relax on a palm-fringed gold-sand beach, no problem. We ll suggest that perfect beach and provide the information you need to enjoy it in a concise, easy-to-read format. Written for repeat and first-time visitors alike, this guide addresses typical planning concerns: Can I leave my coat and tie at home? or Should I visit the olynesian Cultural Center? You ll find the answers to those questions and more in these pages. Our philosophy: If it matters to you, then it matters to us. From the beginning, the people behind Unofficial Guides have worked diligently to deliver honest, straight-up reviews of major destinations. For this book, the authors are two former San Francisco dailynewspaper journalists who have lived in Hawaii and written about the Islands for two decades. They combine island knowledge with the ability to evaluate experiences from the visitor s point of view. Special Features This Unofficial Guide includes these special features: Insightful introductions to Hawaii s six main islands, highlighting the special appeal and character of each. A brief look at Hawaii s fascinating history, from its discovery by the first olynesians, through the missionaries, to today s multicultural, mid-acific reality. Explanations of local customs and island styles. Candid opinions on the best and worst of Hawaii, including accommodations, beaches, restaurants, attractions, shows, clubs, and shops. ractical information on driving distances; how to avoid crowds, dodge traffic jams, and park cheaply; and how to get around Oahu without a car. Itineraries for families, honeymooners, seniors, and disabled travelers. A guide to the state s best golf courses. COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS FROM READERS WE WELCOME YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS about all our Unofficial Guides, including this book. Should you find any errors or omissions, we would appreciate hearing from you. Some of the best suggestions come from our readers.

Box Birmingham, AL unofficialguides@menasharidge.com When you contact us by mail, put your return address on your letter as well as on the envelope. And remember, our work takes us on the road for long periods of time; please forgive any delayed response. HOW INFORMATION IS ORGANIZED: BY SUBJECT AND BY GEOGRAHIC AREAS TO GIVE YOU QUICK ACCESS TO INFORMATION about the best Hawaii has to offer, we ve organized material in several formats. HOTELS So many Island hotels, condos, and bed-and-breakfasts seek your business that choosing the right one can be daunting. We offer easy-to-read charts, maps, and rating systems as well as pertinent information on room size, cleanliness, service, amenities, cost, and accessibility to the beach. RESTAURANTS A highlight of every Hawaiian vacation is sampling the Islands cuisine. The menu is vast and tasty, ranging from simple local favorites like plate lunches to gourmet repasts and Hawaii s own regional cuisine. We take you to Hawaii s best restaurants. ENTERTAINMENT AND NIGHTLIFE Many visitors to the Islands enjoy live shows or nightspots during their stay. This is especially true of visitors to Oahu, where Waikiki is home to ongoing theatrical productions and plenty of hot spots. We ve reviewed a few of the best live productions. We also check out the best nightclubs and lounges. GOLF Golf is a major draw for many visitors. We detail vital stats of the state s top courses to help you choose the right one. GEOGRAHIC AREAS For added convenience, we ve divided Hawaii into geographic areas. erhaps you re interested in staying somewhere in Kapalua Resort on the island of Maui but aren t sure where it is. We ll note for you that Kapalua is in West Maui, and all other West Maui resorts, hotels, attractions, and restaurants will be in that vicinity. lease note that the islands of Niihau and Kahoolawe, while technically among the main southernmost islands in the Hawaiian Island chain, are not included in our geographic areas, nor are the older Northwest Hawaiian Islands that stretch hundreds of miles into the North acific, now protected within the world s largest marine conservation area, the 140,000-square-mile apahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Niihau is a private family-owned island and is, with few exceptions, inaccessible to visitors. For decades, Kahoolawe, was a target for United States Navy bombing practice. Now it is being transformed into a Hawaiian cultural preserve. The uninhabited island is off-limits, except by special invitation.
