This ensures that the wavelengths between 240 and 350 nm which are required for the photolytic elimination of such substances as combined chlorine, trihalogen methanes and TOC are emitted in addition to the wavelength of 254 nm, which is important for disinfection (destroys the DNA of microorganisms). In addition to the direct effect of the emitted energy, the highly reactive hydroxyl radicals that are produced help to remove the chloramines, trihalogen methanes and TOC. This means that Bewades MD systems are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Inorganic and organic contamination occurs along with bacteriological contamination often in the form of pathogenic germs. On average, each swimmers contributes 0.5 to 1 g of contamination in the form of hair, skin particles, saliva and sweat. Add to this 1 to 1.5 g of urea. The swimming pool water treatment systems usually installed in indoor and outdoor pools in accordance with DIN using the process sequence flocculation + filtration + chlorination, chlorine is added to the water as a disinfectant in the form of chlorine gas, sodium or calcium hypochlorite. The problem: Free chlorine reacts with the contaminants to form combined chlorine (monochloramine, dichloramine, trichloramine) as well as trihalogen methanes (THM). We would be pleased to determine the savings potential in your operating costs for you and the possibilities for amortising the costs of chloramine reduction with Bewades MD. The known consequences: Chloramines are responsible for irritation of the skin, mucous membranes and eyes of the swimmers and for the typical and unpleasant indoor pool smell of swimming pool water. In addition to this, trihalogen methanes are said to have a carcinogenic effect. The solution: The chloramine problem can be solved quickly and safely by installing a Bewades MD system between the filter and the chlorine dispenser. The combined chlorine level is kept reliably below the limiting value of 0.2 mg/l stipulated in DIN The advantages of chloramine reduction with Bewades MD: The commonly practised reduction of combined chlorine caused by the dilution effect that results when fresh water is added can be dispensed with, thus reducing operating costs considerably. There is no need to measure out pulverised activated carbon along with the shorter backwash intervals of the filters which usually goes along with it. This can significantly reduce rinsing water requirements and therefore operating costs. The chlorine-reducing activated carbon or anthracite fillings of filters can be dispensed with and chlorine consumption reduced, thus lowering operating costs, too. The legionella problem in the filtrate of filters, which occurs when pulverised activated carbon or filter materials containing carbon are used, can be reduced by replacing these filter materials with quartz sand to the extent possible. 3

The compact, space-saving inline version doesn t take up so much room, thus making it easier to install into existing piping. Another important feature is that the special design of the hydraulic guide mechanism does not permit the emission of highly energised UV light into the pipes (circulation line) with the result that the plastic pipes nor-mally used do not turn brittle, they retain their original material properties. The radiation chamber is made of stainless steel with a high level of chlorine resistance. Special guide plates inside the chamber direct the pool water over the radiators in a defined manner, thus guaranteeing the maximum dwell time of the channelled water, and precluding uncontrolled short circuit flows. This means that the energy emitted by the UV radiators is utilised in the optimum manner (max. degree of efficiency). The radiator themselves are built into quartz glass tubes. Microprocessors monitor and control their functions. A UVC sensor installed as a standard feature continuously monitors the UV output. An alarm is issued if the UVC output drops below the selected warning threshold. Operating temperature is monitored, too: over 60 C (e.g. due to stagnation of the water for too long), the Bewades MD switches off. The system is fitted either with a manual or an automatic cleaning device (wiper), as desired. When the wiper is not needed, it disappears into a UV-protected parking position which prevents the rubber blade from turning brittle and wearing out prematurely. Bewades MD - positive practical experience Once a Bewades MD system has been installed, the level of combined chlorine is reduced within a short space of time to the limiting value of 0.2 mg/l specified by DIN The premise for this is, of course, that the swimming pool water is processed in line with stateof-the-art technology and that a suitable pool hydraulics system is in place. For example, the tests performed at a hotel swimming pool and a thermal spa (volume flows at the swimming pool water treatment systems of 45 and 110 m3/h respectively) showed that once a Bewades MD system had been installed, the level of combined chlorine was reduced permanently and reliably to below the limiting value.
