Glenlawn Collegiate Choirs and Bands at the "The Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival". January 6, 2015 Dear Students and Parents: The Glenlawn Collegiate Senior Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Grade 10 Jazz Band, Intermediate Jazz Band, Senior Jazz Band, Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz have been invited to participate in the "Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival". The "Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival" brings together top school and community choirs and bands. The festival restricts the number of ensembles in order to guarantee maximum educational opportunities for the students. The groups perform for excellent adjudicators, attend workshops and concerts, and hear some of the best ensembles in Canada. The festival is being held at Banff Fine Arts Centre. Our groups are planning to travel by bus leaving on Wednesday, April 22 at 8:30 pm and return home at approximately 1 pm on Tuesday, April 28. Recreation Day: Monday April 27. The majority of our trip the students will be involved in festival activities. We treat this festival as a professional conference, and we expect all students to do the same. At the end of the trip we do devote one day to recreation as a reward for a job well done and as a way of building group spirit. Several excellent options have been arranged for the students to accommodate a variety of desires and budgets. A: Hiking trail, Sulphur Mountain Gondola (up and down), Hot Springs Cost $ 0.00 B: Skiing or Snowboarding at Sunshine (includes $12.00 lunch voucher) Cost $ C: Horseback Riding (1 hour), (Gondola up and down Cost $ Sulphur Mountain, Hot Springs) ***Please note a mandatory lesson must be taken by all skiers/snowboarders in accordance with Louis Riel safety policy. Lesson cost is included in the ski package***
Cost and Methods of Payment The cost of the trip, which includes bus, accommodation, festival fees, travel insurance, breakfast, the final supper and but not other meals or certain recreation activities (skiing, snowboarding or horseback riding) is $650.00/student. The students can pay for the trip either by post dated cheques, fund raising, or a combination of both. All payments and medical forms should be given to Mr. Poulter in room 147. The Music Boosters will have an account for each student. These accounts will hold the amounts each individual has raised through fund raising projects prior to March 23. Deposit cheques should be made out to Glenlawn Collegiate. Schedule for Forms and Payment The following schedule for forms and payment is required for us to meet our expenses along the way. We encourage the use of post-dated cheques to help make collecting money easier for Mr. Poulter. January 31, 2015 $ Field Trip Eligibility Guidelines Recreation Choice Travel Guidelines Consent and Medical forms Room and bus sign up February 28 $ April 7 Music Booster Accounts will be posted on Theatre White board April 13 Balance Owing Total $ plus recreation package Please return the attached forms, with the deposit to Mr. Poulter by January 31, 2015.
Banff 2015, Other Information What to Bring Make sure first and foremost you have all necessary equipment for all of your performances. Ensure your instrument(s) are in top working order, and you personally have made sure you have your sheet music and all other accessories. Percussion students are ALL responsible for the equipment belonging to Glenlawn. When packing, please take into account we are visiting the Rocky Mountains in April. The weather can be very unpredictable. Please make sure you have enough clothes to protect you from the elements. Winter clothing is recommended to be brought along, as well as suitable footwear. Also think about your recreation activity, and what will best keep you warm and dry in case the weather is not at its very best. Sunscreen is strongly recommended anytime people visit the mountains. Meals You are on your own for meals. The Chaperones will arrange a light breakfast in the mornings. The town of Banff is a ten to fifteen minute walk away from both the hotel and the performance centre. The Banff Center does have a canteen on site. There is a large grocery store about ten minutes from the hotel and a convenience store across the street. We recommend approximately $25.00 per day as a minimum guideline. Don't forget to eat. Room Checks Each room will be assigned to one chaperone. Don't leave in the morning until you have had a room check. Keep things extra neat. Glenlawn Spirit Everyone must attend all of the Glenlawn performances. Support each other in every possible and positive way. Glenlawn is a special place; let s share our spirit with the festival. Please remember to be good audience members in and out of the performance halls. Uniforms You will need uniforms for all your performances but not for your clinics. You will require black dress pants, black shoes and black socks. Remember to bring your black dress shirt and tie or scarf.
Medical Concerns If you use epipens or inhalers please ensure that you bring them and that they are functional. Students sometimes find that the altitude affects their asthma, so even if you do not use inhalers at home please have them on the trip. Chaperones are also not allowed to give out over the counter pain relief. If you think you may need these (ibuprofen etc.) please bring these as well. Chaperones Great chaperones can make a trip. Treat them well. Daily Plans When we arrive at the festival everyone will receive a program of events and concerts. There will be many different performances, workshops, and demonstrations going on simultaneously. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to the Glenlawn Music Program. Let s make this an incredible trip. Mr. Monson, Mr. Crowe
TRAVEL GUIDELINES These guidelines are in place so that all can have an enjoyable, safe trip. 1. Students should be cooperative, courteous and maintain a positive attitude at all times. 2. Students are not to leave a group activity without permission. 3. Students should be on time for all activities. 4. Smoking normally is not allowed on school field trips, however, due to the length of this trip smoking will be allowed at designated times and in designated places only 5. Any drug or alcohol use is strictly forbidden. Any student found in violation of this rule will face disciplinary action both on the trip, and upon returning to Glenlawn, as per the Louis Riel School Division policy on drug and alcohol use. 6. No student shall return to the hotel during the day. 7. Curfews will be observed. Please review the above guidelines with your son/daughter. While we hope it is not necessary, any student deemed to be hindering the success of the trip through actions listed, but not limited, to the above guidelines may be sent home. Parents would be contacted before any such measures are taken. If a student is sent home, it is at his/her own expense, and that student will be responsible to also pay for all or part of the travel expenses for an accompanying chaperone. I agree to the conditions set out in this letter regarding my son/daughter's conduct during the trip. Parent Signature: Student Signature:

While in deep water, all non-swimmers will be required to wear a Canadian approved PFD or life jacket that is in good working order and that fits properly. Parents must provide the PFD or life jacket. PFD s are recommended for all non-swimmers in shallow water. Parental and supervisor discretion may apply with regard to older students. 9 SWIMMER S RULES AND EXPECTATIONS Each swim venue will have its own set of rules that are to be followed by all participants. There are elements of risk in swimming that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Remember the following: Swim only in designated areas. Swim with the buddy system. Never dive in shallow water. Know your limits. No horseplay, pushing or shoving on the deck or in the water. To prevent choking, never chew gum or eat food in the water. For outdoor pools and lake swimming, stay out of the water if storms are forecast. When lake swimming, watch for dangerous waves and currents. Restrict activities to designated swimming areas, usually marked by buoys. Never swim in the dark. Never push others under the water. Pay attention to the supervisors. Failure to comply with the above rules and expectations will lead to loss of privilege to participate in the activity. SWIMMING ENDURANCE TEST To enter the deep water, students should be able to demonstrate a continuous 50-metre swim such that there is a coordinated action of arms and legs and the ability to comfortably place the face in the water once in a while during the swim. This must be completed with a reasonable degree of strength. It will be evaluated by a qualified life guard at the venue. This endurance test approximates the requirements of the AquaQuest 6 swim badge. In the case where this standard differs from that of the venue, the higher of the two shall apply.
