June/July/August 2014 Coordinator s Corner Another school year is almost complete and the anticipation of a long hot summer is just around the corner! I always envision sunny days, picnics in the park, camping, and of course, time for hot dogs and ice cream! Now is the time to take advantage of those long hot summer days and the lighter evenings to have some R&R with your families and loved ones. We are so fortunate here in this part of Beautiful BC that we don t have to travel far to enjoy the lakes, camping, hiking, and all that an outdoor life has to offer. In Mission itself we have a summer of festivals and events for all the family to enjoy. Have fun! Stay and Play finishes at the end of June :-( But starts back up again in September-) Direct from MCFD.. If you are planning to provide home for an international student over the summer months, they are aged 12 or over and will be staying with you for longer than 3 weeks they must complete a criminal record check there is no cost to you and forms are available at the CCRR office. 3 Upcoming Events Ice Cream in The Park Date: Thursday July 24th 2014 Time : 10:00am - 11:30am Meet at Centennial Park for a fun playtime and we will bring some yummy ice cream treats. Essential to register : Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be. Make sure you take time for yourself over the summer months to read a good book, sit in the sun, splash in the ocean or go camping in the woods. It s important to take that extra time to unwind and relax from the business of the year. Laura s recommendation: BOOK A CRUISE!!! :-)
Keeping Kids Safe in the Water Kids need constant supervision around water whether the water is in a bathtub, a wading pool, swimming pool, or the beach or lake. Young children are especially vulnerable they can drown in less than 2 inches (6 centimeters) of water. That means drowning can happen where you'd least expect it the sink, the toilet bowl, fountains, buckets, inflatable pools, or small bodies of standing water around your home, such as ditches filled with rainwater, etc. Always watch children closely when they're in or near any water. Don't assume that a child who knows how to swim isn't at risk for drowning. All kids need to be supervised in the water, no matter what their swimming skill levels. And infants, toddlers and weak swimmers should have an adult swimmer within arm's reach to provide "touch supervision."

Be Safe In The Sun! You don't need to hide from the sun completely or wrap up like a mummy to protect yourself. But you should take some precautions.. Drink water.. Take breaks.. Wear sunscreen!
Drink Up! Drinking water is an important part of staying healthy, especially when it's hot outside. When you're sweating, you lose water that your body needs to work properly. And if you're playing a sport or running around in the sun, you lose even more water, because you sweat that much more. So drink up and don't wait until you're thirsty drinking before you feel thirsty helps keep the water level in your body from dropping too low (dehydration) when it's hot or you're sweating a lot with exercise. Got That Hot Feeling? Kids get heat exhaustion when their bodies can't cool themselves fast enough. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak. Heat exhaustion can come on suddenly. A person may just collapse when playing soccer or tennis, for example. It can leave someone feeling really tired for days after it happens. The good news is that the sun doesn't have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks when you start to feel too hot. And don't forget your sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, they make you look so cool!
What is SPF? It stands for SUN PROTECTION FACTOR the higher the number the more protection. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 50 or higher. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The number rating (10,25,30,50)tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. But.. it is still sensible to take care and reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Do this more often if you've been swimming or sweating a lot even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And remember that you can get sunburned more quickly when you're swimming or boating because the reflection from the water intensifies the sun's rays.
What is the Prime Time for wearing sun protection? It s especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun's rays are strongest. For adults and children be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This even includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body so ask someone t help you. If you want to block the sun's rays completely, wear clothing that you can't see your hand through. Sheer fabrics may still allow some rays to come though. You can also wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES Rocket To Me It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make -- and enjoy -- this simple toy. Cut three triangular fins from paper, fold over an edge to form a flap, and glue the flaps to a toilet paper tube. Draw rocket ship parts on paper and glue them on the tube as shown. Thread two 6-foot lengths of curling ribbon through the rocket and tie a plastic ring (we used kid-size bangle bracelets) to each of the four ends. To play, two children each take a pair of rings and stand a few feet apart so that the ribbon is slightly taut. Slide the rocketclose to one child. She launches it by quickly spreading the rings apart. The other child returns the rocket in the same way.
