1 35 th National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet April th, 1962 Hosted by the Huntington, Indiana YMCA Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Peru, Indiana The Huntington, Indiana YMCA Hosted this National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet in the aquatic facilities at the Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in Peru, IN. There were 24 Associations with 210 participants from 8 states entered in this meet.the military base was opened on July 1, 1942 by the U.S. Navy. At that time it served as a training base for Navy Pilots. Historical Note: During the war years, thousands of Navy, Marine and Coast Guard pilots were trained at this facility. One of the most famous alumni of Bunker Hill is former major league baseball great Ted Williams. After the war, the base was closed and it reverted to its former use as farmland. With the outbreak of the Korean War the base was reopened as a Tactical Air Command Base. The Strategic Air Command arrived on the scene in the mid 1950 s and SAC s 8 th Air Force assumed jurisdiction of the base on September 1, On May 12, 1968 the base was renamed as Grissom Air Reserve Base after Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. Gus Grissom a native of Mitchell, Indiana, who was one of the original seven astronauts. Colonel Grissom was killed during a fire in his Apollo capsule while still on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy, Florida.
