Student Code of Conduct Swim team is as an extension of the classroom. It is important to set and maintain high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity on our team. Our mission is to provide direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a lasting effect on our young athletes. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all players and spectators. Sportsmanship is character displayed through athletic competition. Swimmers are expected to have: Integrity - live up to high ideals of ethics and sportsmanship; do what s right. Honesty - do not lie, cheat, steal or engage in any other dishonest or unsportsmanlike conduct. Reliability - fulfill commitments; do what you say you will do; be on time. Respect - treat people with respect all the time. Class live and cheer with class; be gracious in victory and accept defeat with dignity; compliment extraordinary performance; and show respect for all competitors. Self-Control exercise self-control; do not fight or show excessive displays of anger or frustration; do not to demean others. Student-Athlete responsibilities: Always be on time, present and engaged for all swimming activities and practices. Give your best effort in the classroom. Help take care of all high school practice and meet facilities. Be committed to your teammates, coaches, and the swimming program. Treat teachers, administrators, teammates, officials, and opponents with respect. Take care of yourself eat right, get enough sleep, and hydrate before, during and after practice. Unacceptable Conduct includes, but is not limited to: Profanity Obscene gestures Offensive remarks of a sexual nature Trash-talking Taunting or excessive boasting Any actions that demean individuals or the sport. Complaining or arguing with an official Complaining or arguing with a coach Talking back to or shouting at a couch Not swimming Not following instructions No Tobacco (including e-cigarettes), drugs or alcohol 6
Consequences/Discipline Participation in any Georgetown ISD extra-curricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Penalties for Inappropriate Athlete Conduct: 1. Physical Conditioning 2. Parent Meeting 3. Athlete Contract 4. Meet Suspension 5. Dismissal from team Conflicts with Policy or Personnel: This section is included for conflict resolution purposes between athlete and coach or parent and coach. Any conflict with swimming policy or coaches should be handled in accordance to the following protocol: 1. Meet with Coach Pukys and Coach LaRaia directly at a mutually appointed time (never at or after a meet or practice). 2. Meet with EVHS or GHS Athletic Coordinator and Coach Pukys and Coach LaRaia at a mutually appointed time. Constant reprimands, violations of school policy, and discipline referrals will result in suspension and/or expulsion from the team. Please see GISD Athletic handbook for complete district rules and information. Swim Eligibility Swimmers fall under the district eligibility to participate policy. A student who recorded a nine week grade average in any course is lower than 70 at the end of a nine week period shall be suspended from competition during the succeeding three week period. If the student is passing all classes at the three week mark, the student may regain eligibility. Please refer to district policy for full information. Quitting or Dropping Swim Team There will be times when some athletes find it necessary to quit swimming before, during, or after the season. Whatever the reason, an athlete must follow the steps listed below: 1. The athlete should think the whole situation through before reaching a final decision. 2. The athlete should talk to the coach to see if a solution can be reached without having to quit. A conference between the parents, athlete, and coach, or any combination thereof, may be required, and is highly recommended before an athlete will be permitted to quit. 3. If an athlete decides to quit, he/she must check out of the sport just as he/she would check out of any academic class. 7
4. All equipment must be turned in clean. The athlete must pay for any equipment not returned to the coach of the sport he/she is leaving in order to join the other sport. If the coach does not give permission, the athlete must wait until the first sport has completed its season before joining the new sport. While the athlete waits, he/she will be placed in a regular physical education class. Awards and Lettering The school letter is among the highest awards the school bestows; the highest, of course, is the diploma. In order to letter, you must be on a varsity team and satisfy the requirements of the head coach. A participant may letter at the coach s discretion if the participant is considered to have been of exceptional value to the team. In order to letter, an athlete must: maintain a 95% practice attendance swim in all scheduled meets must positively contribute to the team must score points in two or more competitions, either as an individual, or as part of relay team must compete in the district meet Letters can be forfeited for the following reasons: dismissal from team, quitting the team, or grade ineligibility. NOTE: Any student who has qualified for a letter but has been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons will not receive an award. Meet Information All meet information will be posted on EVHS/GHS Swimming page. Meet location and heat sheets will be posted before each meet. Travel to competitions All athletes will: Travel to and from all away meets with the team. If, for some reason, an athlete needs to ride home with their parents, the coaches must be notified in writing before leaving for the meet (at least 24 hours in advance). Under no circumstances will an athlete be released to ride with anyone other than their parents, or a person designated by their family. Dress neatly and properly on all trips. Coaches will advise the swimmers in regards to the proper attire. Conduct himself/herself properly on the school bus or in any school vehicle. He/she will follow the printed rules for bus ridership that govern all Georgetown ISD bus riders. 8
Receive permission from the coach before bringing any radios, electronic games, etc., aboard the bus. Be informed of departure and return times. It is your responsibility to be on time for all departures and to inform your parents of the pick-up time after a contest. Every effort will be made by the coaching staff to notify proper personnel as to unexpected changes in arrival time. Only coaches, players, trainers, and/or school administrators are allowed to ride the team bus. Overnight Travel There may be times when teams will be allowed overnight trips. In these instances the athlete must: Abide by the curfew set by the head coach. Not be in different gender rooms at any time. Travel to and from the meet with the team. Be aware that coaches may ask to check the athlete s bags before leaving for the trip. Athletes must adhere to the expectations for students in the GISD Student Code of Conduct. No alcohol, tobacco, or other drug use (including no electronic cigarettes or inhalants) Athletes are responsible for helping keep the bus clean, and will help clean the bus after each meet once we return to the school. What to Bring to a meet Swimmer: Swimsuit Towel Goggles Swim cap Water bottle, prefer ½ gallon insulated sport jug Flip flops or pool side shoes Swimmers ear drops - use after every swim Sunscreen if outdoors Team shirt and shorts or sweatpants Track suit or parka for cool weather meets Snacks Make sure all items are clearly marked with a name. Parents: Tent for outdoor meets Chair Hat Sunscreen Drinks snacks 9
Parent Volunteer Requirements Swim meets require parent participation to operate; therefore volunteering is required for each family. Before each meet the volunteer coordinator will request parents to sign up for volunteer positions. Volunteering is a great way to get to know other parents and swimmers. The majority of our meets are much shorter and more laid back than what you may be accustomed to, especially early in the season. Join the FUN! We can't have a meet without our awesome volunteers! MANDATORY GISD Background Check: All parents must complete the GISD Background Check. Please your confirmed background check s to Coach Ginger at: laraiaj@georgetownisd.org Meet Volunteer Job Descriptions Positions that require training in advance or full season commitment are indicated. Other positions are easy to learn and lots of fun! Our more experienced volunteers are always glad to help! Computers Inputs all data into computer prior to meet, creates heat sheets, and maintains all data including team records and all meet results. Enters results into the computer at the meet. **This position requires training and is a season long commitment. Concessions Management of concession stand at meets. Exchange Judge Exchange judges watch the relay exchanges to ensure that they are legal. This job is for relays only, which are held at the beginning and end of meet *Must attend a training clinic at the beginning of each season in order to volunteer in this position. Head Timer Organizes and briefs the Lane Timers on their duties prior to the meet, and is in charge of the Lane Timers throughout the meet. Coordinates with Computers and Coaches as needed. Hospitality Responsible for getting water to all volunteers (timers, judges, runners, etc.) as well as coaches. Cooler of bottled water is provided. 10
Lane Timer Use a stopwatch to time individual lanes and write down times. The number of volunteers needed varies based on the number of lanes and the location of the meet. Typically there are 2 or 3 timers per lane. Arrive 15 minutes prior to each meet for instructions. Don't stress or be afraid to try this position, there are several layers of backup times. We always need lots of timers and the meets cannot start until these positions are all filled. Safety Monitor Be on the lookout for any situations at meets that may be a safety issue. Periodically stroll around the meet location, including where the teams are set up. This position does crowd control at the Georgetown Recreation Center meets. Try to keep main doorway cleared as much as possible. Once the first relays are over, the crowd will generally clear. Direct spectators should be asked to stand along walls or outside if the bleachers are full. If spectators bring in food, kindly tell spectators that no food or drink other than water is allowed in the Rec Center and direct them to the room with tables and vending machines. Please do remember that you represent the teams and schools, so kindness and respectful direction is important. This job is not as bad as it sounds! It's especially easy at the Village Pool. Ribbons This position is needed at large meets held at the Georgetown Recreation Center. Volunteer sorts ribbons for 1st thru 8 th place and affixes labels of top finishers to ribbons. Computers print labels about every 7 events. Volunteers are set up in vending machine room. Go to Computers and ask for labels after event 7. Be courteous of any computer delays, just sit and wait if necessary. Sort ribbons by team in baggies or envelopes. Volunteers must stay until final results are entered in computer and labels printed. Runner A runner is the volunteer who collects time sheets from all the lane timers, generally after each event, but check with the computer volunteers for how often they would like time sheets collected. A second runner collects DQ (disqualified) slips from the judges when they hold them up. Deliver time sheets and DQ slips to Computers. Stroke Judge The Stroke Judges work in pairs on each side of the pool with one member of each pair being from each team. They observe strokes and turns to see that swimmers comply with requirements for that stroke. **Must attend a clinic prior to the start of the season in order to volunteer in that position. Event Board 11
Write the current event and heat on the dry erase board in a location where all swimmers, spectators and coaches are able to view. Bring a chair for meets held at the village pool so you can sit by the board and keep it current. Order of Finish Sit at or near the finish. Write down the order of finish for each heat as it's completed; especially top finishers. This can be tracked by lanes, for example a finish order could be lane 4, 6, 5, 3, 1, 2, 7, 8. Entry fee Collect entry fee at certain large meets. Booster Club The GISD Swim Booster club supports both the coaches and swimmers of the Georgetown and East View high school swim teams. All parents are encouraged to participate in the booster club, the greater the participation the better the experience for all swimmers!
