2 Introduction and School background Alleyn s is a friendly, caring, academically excellent, independent co educational school for pupils aged Alleyn s was the first major London school to become coeducational over 35 years ago and that philosophy is embedded across all aspects of school life. The Junior School is a member of IAPS, with pupils aged The Senior School is an HMC school with pupils aged Alleyn s is a highly regarded school within the local community, across London and beyond. Both staff and pupils take great pride in this reputation. The commitment from all is evident in the continuing success and progress of the School. The school site comprises about 30 acres in South East London. The majority of the space is laid out for school sports cricket, athletics, rounders etc. during the summer and football during the autumn and spring. The school operates a separate sports ground of approximately 18 acres nearby. Alleyn s is currently undertaking an extensive refurbishment of its swimming pool, scheduled to be completed this summer. The enhanced facilities will include seating for 110 spectators together with an electronic timing system, which will enable the School to host galas for its pupils and provide competition facilities for outside users. Alleyn s would like to appoint the Swimming Pool Manager prior to the opening of the pool. Further details about the School, its activities and resources are given on the website The Responsibilities of the Swimming Pool Manager The aim of this role is to ensure that the swimming pool is appropriately maintained and managed for the benefit of the School and outside users. In particular the roleholder will: Ensure that the swimming pool facility (including the pool itself, the pool hall, changing areas, toilets, viewing terraces, as well as the gym space in the same building) is maintained to a high standard day to day. This will necessarily include ad hoc cleaning (though note that the main daily cleaning will be done by others) and the appropriate setting up, management and storage of pool equipment Work closely with the teaching staff of the Junior and Senior Schools, primarily the PE staff, to ensure the swimming pool is suitably equipped and set out for the school s activities each day Be responsible for opening and closing the pool facilities (this is likely to include some weekends) Draft the normal and emergency operating policies and procedures for the swimming pool facility, ensure they are adhered to and are reviewed regularly to make sure they are up to date with current regulations

3 Ensure all compliance with health and safety requirements, including regularly taking water samples for quality testing Manage the pool plant to ensure appropriate dosing of the pool to maintain water quality and have a thorough understanding of COSHH regulations Ensure routine maintenance, checks and inspections of plant and machinery and equipment within the swimming pool facility are carried out (by others, where appropriate) Create and review risk assessments, identify & control hazards Complete pool records (as per HSG179) Work with a clear understanding of HSG179 (managing H&S in swimming pools). Be aware of the School s Health & Safety Policy and its application to the Swimming Pool facility Ensure appropriate staffing, such as duty managers, life guards and staff operating the technical equipment, at all times, to meet School or external hire requirements Manage such staff and ensure they are appropriately supervised and trained Provide support in setting up and operating the electronic timing system and other technical equipment Ensure external hirers have current certification in the things they teach and insurance in place, and monitor renewal dates Ensure external hires treat the swimming pool facility with the utmost care and respect, and report any incidents of inappropriate use to the Head of Commercial and Community Activities immediately Manage all bookings and plans for the use of the swimming pool throughout the year (for School and external hires). Help to ensure the use of the facility is maximised without compromising availability to the pupils during term time. This will require clear and consistent communication with the key teaching staff and Head of Commercial and Community Activities Support the Head of Commercial and Community Activities in developing holiday programmes In conjunction with all staff of the School, support, promote and act within the School s Safeguarding Policy. Any additional duties, as directed by the School which are within the reasonable capability and responsibility of the Swimming Pool Manager. Line Management The Swimming Pool Manager is supervised day to day by the Assistant Bursar, works closely with the PE staff and is ultimately responsible to the Bursar.

4 The Candidate Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals who work well individually and as part of a team. The successful candidate will have experience of pool maintenance and of facilities management. Knowledge of HSG179 Managing health & safety in swimming pools is essential. Applicants must hold either an ISRM Pool Plan Operation Certificate or STA/ISPAL level two Certificate in Swimming Pool and Spa Water treatment. Applicants will also need to have experience of creating and reviewing risk assessments. They will also be computer literate and work well as part of a team. A positive and willing attitude is essential as is the ability to work well with colleagues. A consideration for pupils and teaching staff is a requirement of the position. The successful candidate will be willing and able to work flexibly, efficiently and to deadlines. Inevitably certain times of the academic year are pressured in the pattern of workload and it is important that the post holder maintains a positive attitude. An up to date first aid certificate and /or life guard training is desirable, together with swimming teacher qualifications. Interviews Interviews will be conducted at the School. This will consist of an interview with the Bursar and other relevant staff. Please note that references may be taken up before the interviews. Terms and Conditions The job is full time (not a term time only position) with twenty days holiday per year rising to twenty five after five years of employment, plus public holidays and any discretionary stand down period which may be granted over the Christmas/New Year period. There will be occasional days in the school calendar when the successful candidate will be required to work at weekends. This will be paid as TOIL or under exceptional circumstances as overtime, with the exception of Founder s Day, a Saturday per year in late June or early July, which is treated as a normal school day. There is a two thirds fee remission (pro rata for part time) for children of members of staff attending Alleyn s Senior and Junior Schools, subject to meeting the admissions criteria, and which is a non taxable benefit. There is also some fee remission available at Dulwich College and James Allen s Girls School, though the terms and conditions are different and it is taxable benefit.

5 The starting salary will be competitive based on relevant experience. Annual salaries are paid over twelve monthly installments. The role holder will have access to, and may be automatically enrolled into, the School s Group Personal Pension Plan. This plan provides for matching 5% contributions from the employer and employee and is currently run through Scottish Widows. On completion of the required recruitment checks, the post would be available to the successful candidate with immediate effect or at the completion of their due term of notice.
