4 Powerful technology required Who has to ensure a first class, hygienically clean water quality at a calculated usage of up to 2,500 guests at the same time, is really facing a big challenge. In this case, it would be best to centrally control and monitor the complete system for the water treatment and disinfection. For such a task, the necessary seamless data transfer between all components requires a reliable and modern measuring and control technology for displaying the actual operating status, for optimally controlling the pumps as well as for precisely metering the disinfectant. Quick commissioning due to CAN bus system The installation s centrepiece is the well-engineered CAN bus system for interconnection of all measuring and control devices, sensors and pumps. Thus, all relevant measured values are continuously controlled and recorded centrally by the DULCOMARIN II measuring and control unit. Via the five-core CAN bus, having a total length of about 700 metres, all data is permanently and seamlessly transferred in order to display the actual operating status as well as to control the pumps. Pool renovation in a different way Under the motto donation instead of Christmas presents, five expert companies in the field of pool construction renovated the pool of the Clemens-Maria children s home in Putzbrunn near Munich. During its 90 years of tradition, the children s home has evolved to a modern curative education institution with sophisticated forms of care for more than 150 children starting from the age of three. In December 2011, a survey revealed that after 20 years of operation the pool installations urgently needed a renovation. The BEHNCKE GmbH, which is located in the same town, launched the project, took on board the necessary partner companies and organized the complete implementation. The measuring and control system DULCOMARIN II was upgraded according to the German standard DIN. As well, new ProMinent metering pumps were integrated in order to control and adjust the hygienic parameters as specified in DIN Due to the optimization of the filter and metering technology, the use of chemicals for water treatment is now reduced considerably, though providing a constantly good water quality at the same time. 6 new multi-talent AmonG ContRolleRs Measuring and controlling made easy Dream holiday in Carinthia Controller does not equal controller, as the new platform dialog DACa makes the continuous measuring and control of parameters in water treatment very simple. It replaces the controller D1Ca/D2Ca providing special functions such as processing of disturbance variables and changeover of control parameters. The compact multifunctional measuring and control device closes the intelligent control circuit between DULCOTEST sensors and ProMinent metering pumps. Analogue and digital Due to its 14 selectable measured variables, which can be freely combined, the controller dialog DACa is perfectly suited for the treatment of swimming pool water. Moreover, depending on the application it can be configured for one or two measuring channels. The powerful measuring and control device can operate with analogue or digital sensors and actuators. For seamless communication with the process control level Profibus DP, Modbus RTU, OPC and a web server via LAN/WLAN will be available in the future. Measured values and calibration data as well as the device setup are stored on an easily accessible digital SD card. Thus, these data can also be transferred to other controllers without difficulty. Just measuring everything The new controller dialog DACa is not only flexible and adaptable to specific requirements, but first of all, it ensures the reliable measuring and recording of numerous important parameters: ph, Redox, fluoride and conductivity (ma) as well as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, chlorite, bromine, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and dissolved oxygen. The controller even compensates the temperature influence on the parameters ph value and fluoride. According to the local conditions, the controller can be installed, due to its optional assembly set, either directly in the control cabinet or as usual, mounted on the wall. International users will be delighted, too, because the dialog DACa offers 24 operating languages simply a real multi-talent! Water at body temperature with a magnesium sulphate (epsomite) content of approximately 70 percent makes the body float weightlessly. The client lies in a kind of oversized egg- or shell-shaped tank or in a separate pool, which is filled with salt water and will be closed completely. The brine has a temperature of about 35 Celsius and supports the experience of floating. Total relaxation The temperature of the brine bath supports this impression, as with 34.8 to 35.2 Celsius it corresponds to the outside temperature of our skin. Water treatment After bathing, the water in the floatation pool is not drained. Due to economic and ecologic reasons, the brine stays in the pool for a longer time. That is why experts speak of circulation water. In order to ensure the required water quality according to the German Law on Protection against Infection, the brine is treated. The treatment guarantees that each client will bath in hygienically clean brine. When installing a floatation system, thus, great importance has to be attached to the water treatment system. Brine is considered to have an antibacterial effect, but here, this is not sufficient regarding the hygienic demands. Reliable measuring and control technology is required, as the good quality of the brine is the basis of success. In large floatation The multi-parameter system DULCOMARIN II measures and controls the hygiene auxiliary parameters ph value, Redox value and free chlorine. Peristaltic pumps of the type DF2a are metering sulphuric acid in order to keep the ph value at 7 and sodium hypochlorite in order to keep the value of free chlorine constant. 9 Take a look at the wild side Interested in safely observing wild animals at close quarters? The Taronga Zoo in Sydney offers extraordinary insights into the exciting animal world. In the large seawater pools, ProMaqua technology ensures best living conditions for the vivacious inhabitants. Especially for watching the animals underwater, it is necessary to have clean glass panes and clear water. Here, particular processes have to be considered such as ozone, UV or filter technology. Key factor water quality History The first floatation water tank was developed already in the 1950s by the controversial American neurophysiologist John C. Lilly. At that time, there were two contradictory hypotheses regarding how the human brain reacts under sensory deprivation. One side argued that the brain would reduce its activity and that brain cells would even die off if permanently deprived of external stimuli. Lilly was convinced of the opposite to be true and proved his theory by devising the first isolation tank in In many different experiments he proved that certain activities of the brain are stimulated by means of sensory deprivation. The concept of the isolation tank has further evolved as a good means against sensory overload. In the 1990s, this relaxation method became popular again in the United Kingdom for treating stressed London bankers and businessmen. From there, the wave then swept to Germany. Nowadays, one does not only relax in an isolated tank anymore, but in spacious floatation rooms. Animals just want to have fun With its numerous attractions, Sydney on the east coast of Australia is a magnet for locals as well as for tourists. One of them is without any doubt the Taronga Zoo, which opened in the year In the language of the Australian natives Taronga means nice view. In the zoo s area of 21 hectares visitors can observe more than 2,500 animals and enjoy the breathtaking view over the harbour of the biggest city of the fifth continent. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Taronga Zoo has already received several tourism awards. Every owner of an aquarium knows: only in clean water fishes are at ease. And only clear water makes it possible for the observer to watch the inhabitants of the seas, which normally stay hidden from our sight. In April 2008, the Taronga Zoo s new seawater section called Great Southern Oceans was opened for the public. Seals, sea leopards and penguins are splashing about five seawater pools and one freshwater pool. Ozone is used for disinfecting the water, as in the respective concentration, it is totally harmless for the animals. Furthermore, in total three o- zone generation plants of the type OZONFILT OZVa and four of the type BONa are used. The motto of the Taronga Conservation Society Australia is For the Wild, based on the conviction of a common future of men and animals on this planet. That is why the Taronga Zoo in Sydney and the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo are cooperating with lots of organisations on a worldwide scale in order to protect endangered species and their habitats. This also includes fighting against poaching and the traffic with wild animals as well as the elaboration of solutions for a conflict-free coexistence of the local inhabitants with the wild animals. Another essential part are the zoo s breeding programs for the preservation of species living in Australia. The Wildlife Hospitals of both Australian zoos are also playing an important role: They are the first point of contact for sick and injured animals coming from the zoos or the wilderness. Experienced veterinarians are leading the hospitals, which dispose of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, and thus, there are many success stories of saved animals. For example, every year about 35 Little Penguins are rehabilitated at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. It is the only penguin species breeding on the Australian mainland and living mostly in colonies around New Zealand. Due to various reasons such as malnutrition, bite injuries or diseases, the sea inhabitants are coming to the wildlife hospital, are examined, cockered up and then released back into the wild. That is the motto brought alive: For the Wild! Rita s column The swimming cap a relic of bygone times My favourite swimming cap was light blue and covered with lots of coloured rubber flowers. So, my head looked like a huge flower field. I was five years old and already able to put on that flower cap by myself - without the help of others. At that time, swimming caps were compulsory and one was wearing the cult model of the 1950s with the head held high. Since the 1980s, that belongs to the past and the pool supervisors calls for swimming caps have long faded away. At the Taronga Zoo there are also lodges with overnight accomodation including a fantastic view over the skyline of Sydney. Later on, I had swimming caps made of silicone and it was annoying to get my long hair stuffed under them. Not to mention looking at myself in the mirror. Whichever way one turned, one just looked stupid. There may be people who don t lose their grace even wearing such a cap. But I definitely do not belong to them. That s the reason why I m eternally grateful to manufacturers of filter and disinfection systems. As I don t have to hide my superb head of hair anymore and I can happily shout: Summer, sun and lido I m coming! Every operating situation can be centrally scanned via webserver. Well, I have to admit that I don t shed a tear over it. In the end, I really liked the swimming cap only as a young child.
