2009 WEDGWOOD SUMMER SWIM TEAM SEASON Welcome to the 2009 Wedgwood Swim Team. This is the current Parent/Swimmer Handbook. We hope it will answer most of the questions you may have about the intricacies of a swim team, and will help you have a smooth and comfortable experience. Please become familiar with it and refer to it when needed. It is always available online, at the Wedgwood Swim Club website at We believe this handbook will answer most of your questions, so you won t need to track down the coaches and pool staff. Hopefully this handbook will make your life easier while allowing the coaches and staff to do their jobs as efficiently as possible as well. Thank you for becoming involved with Wedgwood Swim Team. We re looking forward to a GREAT 2009 season! WEDGWOOD SWIM TEAM The Wedgwood Swim Team offers opportunities to make new friends, learn good habits and sportsmanship, take on responsibility, improve swimming skills, and compete with other swimmers. Each swimmer is important to the team regardless of swimming ability. Team members are encouraged to participate in all team activities, workouts and swim meets, and to support their fellow swimmers. Parents have the opportunity to meet more Wedgwood Pool members and to become actively involved in the operation of the swim team as volunteers. Most importantly, Wedgwood Swim Team exists for the purpose of having fun! SEATTLE SUMMER SWIM LEAGUE The Wedgwood Swim Team competes in the Seattle Summer Swim League, which is divided into two divisions, Northern and Southern. There are eight teams in each division. Northern Division Southern Division Aqua Club Sandpoint Arbor Heights Marine Hills Blue Ridge Sheridan Beach Gregory Seahurst Normandy Park Innis Arden View Ridge Kent Olympic View Klahaya Wedgwood Lakeridge Twin Lakes 1

SWIM MEETS There are several levels of team competition during the season. The first part of the season involves dual swim meet competitions among the eight teams in each division. From mid-june through mid-july, we will compete once with each of the teams in the Northern Division, for a total of 7 meets. Some of the meets are held at Wedgwood and some are at the other pools. Check the schedule on page 6 for dates and locations. Maps to each location are included in this handbook. The winning team at this level of competition is designated the Dual Meet Champion of the division. Dual Meets B Champs Girls Preliminary Meet Boys Preliminary Meet Divisional Championship Meet All City Meet At the end of the dual meet season, all swimmers participate in one of three preliminary championship meets. Swimmers who do not qualify for Northern Division Preliminaries (qualifying times are listed on pages 14 & 15) will represent Wedgwood at the "B" Championship meet. B Champs consists only of individual events, no relays. Only swimmers that have not qualified for a Preliminary meet (or prelims) are eligible to swim at B Champs.** If a swimmer makes a preliminary qualifying time at B Champs, they are then eligible to swim at a Preliminary meet. It is designed to be a fun meet for the swimmers, and they usually do quite well! Those swimmers who meet the league qualifying times during the dual meet season or at the B Champs meet can swim in the preliminary meet. The six fastest swimmers and relays in each event at the preliminary meets will go on to swim in the Northern Division Championship Meet. From the Northern Division and Southern Division Championships, the six fastest swimmers and relays for each event will progress to the All City Championship Meet. This year's 2008 All City Championship Meet will be held at Kent on Tuesday, August 5 th. All team members are encouraged to attend these championship swim meets to cheer for our team. Also, team members not swimming in these meets may be alternates for relays. Swimmers in the "B" Championship meet may also swim in relays in the Preliminaries and Northern Division Championships. ** An exception to this rule is that if a swimmer has qualified for Prelims in only one event and would prefer to swim at B Champs, they may do so but only in events that they do not have a Prelim qualifying time. If a swimmer chooses to do this, they forfeit the opportunity to swim at Prelims in any event, even the one they had already qualified for. This is not typically done and should be discussed with the swimmer s coach. 2

2009 Coaching Staff Matt Miller Head Coach Hello again Wedgwood families! This will be my ninth year coaching at Wedgwood Pool and twelfth year teaching lessons at an SSSL Pool. In 2004, I graduated with a BA in History and a minor in Secondary Education from the University of Portland. I am currently enrolled at the University of Phoenix for a masters in education. For the past five school years, I have coached football and baseball at Blanchet, and coached swimming at Blanchet for the past four years. I have also been substitute teaching at several private schools in the area over the past five years. I am really excited to build on last summer's successes and hope that you all go into this season with the same enthusiasm that I will. Michael Matsumoto Hey everybody! This is my fourth year coaching at Wedgwood Swim Pool and I could not be more excited. I look forward to seeing everyone at practice and catching up on the year. For the last three years I have been coaching Roosevelt Men's Swimming and this last fall I started coaching the Women's team as well. I am a senior at the University of Washington where I am majoring in Sociology. I am really excited to help everybody meet their goals, work hard, and have some fun while we're at it! See you all soon! Jill Kripps Is it really swim team time again already?! This past year sure has flown by and thank goodness it did because I have been in dire need of some summer swimming fun! I m so excited to be returning for my third season of coaching Wedgwood. I have had so much fun the past two summers that I had to stick around for one more before I start my nursing career. That s right, this May I will officially graduate with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from ASU, and after I pass my nursing boards over the summer will officially be an RN! For those of you who don t already know, I started swimming for Wedgwood when I was seven years old and that beginning led me on to become a collegiate swimmer at ASU. I swam for ASU for four years and was cocaptain of the women s team my senior year. I graduated from ASU in May 2007 with a degree in Kinesiology (exercise science) and then returned to pursue my second degree in Nursing. Even though my personal swimming career has ended, my enthusiasm and love for the sport has not dwindled. It is my pleasure to be able to return for one more summer and share my knowledge of this sport with all of you. Let s all gear up (suits, goggles, caps, towels, sunscreen, and a positive attitude) for another great summer! Peter Hoff Hey Wedgwood! I am so excited to be coaching this summer. I ve wanted to be a coach at Wedgwood since I was an 8 and under on the team back in the day. I grew up on the team and graduated in I m super excited to reconnect with the team and I am really looking forward coaching all of you this summer. I have been a lifeguard and swim instructor at Wedgwood for the past 4 summers. The past 2 summers I have helped coach the Wedgwood Waterpolo team. This past winter I ve spent traveling around the world on a study abroad program, but normally I am a student at the University of Washington. I am excited to get home for the summer and be at Wedgwood with all of you. See you soon. 3

COMMUNICATING WITH THE COACHES A message box for the coaches is located in the pool office and is checked regularly. Please use this box when you would like to arrange a meeting with a coach, inform coaches that your swimmer will be unavailable for a meet, or if your swimmer has a request to swim a particular event. Any messages for the coaches concerning requests or availability to swim in a meet must be received by 3:00pm the day before the relevant swim meet. Requests received after this time cannot be incorporated as the coaches prepare the meet lineups during the afternoon of the day before a meet. PLEASE NOTE: You may also communicate with coaches via . Below please find their addresses: Matt Miller, Head Coach: mattymmiller@gmail.com Michael Matsumoto: mikeymats@gmail.com Jill Kripps: jkripps@gmail.com Peter Hoff: pmhoff@u.washington.edu Remember that the coaches are busy with swimmers during workouts and that it is easier for them to give you their full attention outside of workout time. Meet absences must be reported to the coaches as soon as the absence is known to the swimmer and/or family. This knowledge is essential in helping the coaches create their meet lineups. It also helps minimize last minute changes and disappointments when swimmers realize they can't swim their relay because they are one member short. We encourage you to provide a written note regarding absences, because verbal exchanges can be forgotten. RULES, REGULATIONS AND OTHER INFORMATION BOARD POLICY 1. All swimmers must be registered and have both Wedgwood Pool membership dues and swim team dues paid PRIOR to starting workouts. Refunds are available within a week of the swimmer beginning workouts if the swimmer does not continue. 2. It is essential that swim team members and parents recognize the responsibility of the coaching staff to determine any and all decisions concerning swim meet assignments. 3. All meet absences must be reported IN WRITING one full week before the meet is to take place. In the event of illness, please notify the coaches as soon as possible. 4

4. New 8 & Under swimmers will need to establish their basic swimming and water safety competence to participate in workouts and meets. The coaches will "qualify" new swimmers. Since our youngest swimmers improve so rapidly, additional qualification tests may be requested as the season progresses. WORKOUT SCHEDULE Tuesday, May 19- Evening workouts begin and will continue Monday through Thursday nights through June 19th. We realize that many swimmers are still busy with school and other sports, and may not be able to attend every workout. Please come to the workout when you can because these first four weeks will help swimmers get into condition and be ready for a successful first meet. The following schedule applies for the various age groups: 8 and under swimmers 7:00 to 7:30PM 9-10 swimmers 7:30 to 8:00PM swimmers 8:00 to 8:45PM 14 and up swimmers 8:45 to 9:30PM Monday, June 22 - Morning Workouts begin. 8 We will be hosting three dual meets this season (plus the Wedg vs. Wood intrasquad meet), and Northerns. These meets require participation from all families since well over 100 volunteers are needed to run each swim meet. We have a reputation for hosting excellent events. We also need help to make possible the other fun events of the season. So please be sure that you've signed up to be involved on one of the meet committees. It s fun to work with other members, and to help the team. GENERAL TEAM RULES At Workout: 1. Be at all workouts on time and ready to get in and swim at the assigned time. 2. Let your coach know if there is an important reason for not attending a workout. 3. Listen to the coach(es). 4. Always try your best. 5. Work with the other swimmers in your lane. 6. Help coaches at every opportunity. At Swim Meets: 1. Participate in all team activities, including cheers. Show your support of other team members by cheering for them before and during their race. 2. Always try your hardest. If you try to do your best you can always be proud of your performance, no matter what place you finish. 3. Clean up your area. Remember, you represent Wedgwood Swim Team and Pool. Show respect for our and other clubs. Sportsmanship: Good sportsmanship is one of the most important parts of being a member of the Wedgwood Swim Team. Good sportsmanship means many things and must be thought of during all swim team activities, including practices and swim meets. 1. Always be considerate of other swimmers and teams. 2. Never call other teams or swimmers inappropriate names. 3. Never accuse other swimmers or teams of cheating. 4. Always congratulate the swimmers you compete with after the event. 5. Listen carefully to officials, coaches, and parents. 8

Best Time/Star Charts: Coaches (with the help of our Star Chart volunteers) will track the times of all swimmers 10 and under during the season. Personal best times will be acknowledged on the star charts, which are posted on the upper deck. GENERAL SWIM MEET GUIDELINES 1. Be at the meet one hour before it is scheduled to begin. It is the swimmer's responsibility to arrange rides to and from the meets. Meets go on rain or shine. Every swimmer is expected to be at the meet unless prior notification has been given to the coach. Last minute illnesses/emergencies must also be reported to the coaches ASAP. 2. Know the events you are swimming in and who is on your relay. The events that all swimmers will be swimming will be posted the day of the meet. 3. Do not sit on, stand on, or play with the lane ropes at our pool or other pools. 4. Stay in the team area for the entire meet. Eight & Under swimmers need to stay in their designated area where the coach and/or 8 & Under Helpers can find them. 5. Be on time for your races. The swimmers are responsible for their events and must get to the starting blocks on time. If you miss an event, you are letting the whole team down; especially if you are on a relay. 6. Bring warm clothing to all swim meets including several towels, a sleeping bag, extra clothing, etc. Even on very warm days swimmers can get cold, particularly when their events are toward the end of the meet. 7. Most swim meets last about 3-1/2 hours. 8. Do not leave a meet early unless you clear it with the coaches first. You may be needed to substitute. 9

HELPFUL HINTS 1. Swimmers are strongly urged to take swimming lessons, especially the competitive stroke class. Swim team is NOT a replacement for swimming lessons. It is difficult to give each swimmer the full amount of attention needed to perfect their skills during workout. In the competitive stroke class, swimmers will receive individualized attention to help overcome any stroke peculiarities and to polish turns and dives. Classes are divided by age groups and skill ability. In addition, the coaches and pool staff are available for private lessons. Contact them through the pool office if you are interested; the phone number is Wedgwood swim caps are available for sale and swimmers are encouraged to wear them. 3. To ease eyestrain, goggles are encouraged at practices. However, swimmers should be aware that in competition goggles might come off. Therefore, it is a good idea to occasionally practice without goggles. 4. Stay out of the sun and get plenty of rest on meet days. Taking a nap the day of a meet is also a good idea for all swimmers. On days of meets, swimmers should not go to the pool and play. 5. At swim meets, swimmers should not eat foods that they are not used to eating at home. Swimmers want to be at their best for their races. Do not overeat candy and other sweet foods. Save all goodies until after the swimmer's events are done. 6. One of the main goals of being on swim team is improvement. Therefore, the coaches encourage individual goal setting. You can use your individual record sheet (the last page of this handbook) to chart your progress. Also, updated charts listing the swimmers best times will be posted on the upper deck on the north wall. 7. Regularly check the swim team memo board in the lobby for any notices about the team. The committee also sends out communications via . MEET RULES AND STROKE INFORMATION Each type of swimming race has special rules, and if these rules are not followed, the swimmer may be disqualified (DQ'ed). If a swimmer is disqualified in a race, no points will be awarded to that swimmer in that event. The rules governing meets are the High School Swimming Rules. 10

Freestyle: Any stroke may be swum, but crawl stroke is preferred due to its greater speed. The swimmers must not touch the bottom of the pool or push or pull on the ropes. Backstroke: The swimmer must stay on his/her back for the entire race except when executing the backstroke flip turn. During a turn, the swimmer is allowed one arm stroke on the front side in a continuous motion towards the wall. See coaches for exact details on this turn. Breaststroke: Perhaps the most difficult stroke to master, the breaststroke requires simultaneous movements of the arms on the same horizontal plane. The hands are pushed forward from the breast and brought backwards together. The kick is a simultaneous thrust of the legs called a "frog" kick. No flutter or dolphin kicking is allowed. The swimmer is allowed one underwater pull off the start and one on the turn. The swimmer must touch the wall with two hands simultaneously at the turn and the finish. Butterfly: Both arms come out of the water overhead at the same time and the feet must stay together doing a dolphin kick. The swimmer must touch the wall with two hands simultaneously at the turn and the finish. The Individual Medley (100 IM): The individual medley, commonly referred to as the "IM", features all four strokes. The swimmer begins with a length of butterfly, changes to a length of backstroke, then a length of breaststroke and finishes with a length of freestyle. Freestyle Relay: The freestyle relay features four team members each swimming an equal distance of crawl stroke. Each swimmer must not leave the block until the preceding swimmer on his or her relay team touches the wall. Medley Relay: All four strokes are swum by four different individuals. No swimmer may swim two legs of the relay. Each stroke must be swum correctly and in the correct order. The order of the medley relay is backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Starts and Turns: Swimmers are called into the starting position by the starter who visually checks that all swimmers are down and still. Once the starter is satisfied that all swimmers are steady, the starter horn is beeped to start the race. If the starter feels that one of the swimmers has left the blocks too early, the race will 11

be recalled by a series of additional beeps. In all events the swimmer must touch the wall on their turn. In freestyle and backstroke, the swimmer needs to touch only with the feet. In the breaststroke and butterfly, the swimmer must touch the wall with both hands simultaneously before turning.
