Black Hawk Swimming and Diving 2011 COACHES BIOGRAPHY Head Coach Breann Haney Coach Haney swam club in Iowa and Arizona for 11 years earning many top honors including several state championship titles and participation at the national level. In high school Coach Haney swam for Mesa Mountain View where she placed several times at state in the top 4 and was the team captain during her senior year when Mountain View won its only Women s Team State Championship title. While in college Coach Haney swam for the University of Nebraska at Omaha where she set 7 school records and is still in the all time top 5. Haney began coaching club swimming in Many of her swimmers have been state champions and national level athletes. In 2006 Coach Haney moved to Arizona and continued coaching elite level club athletes for the Arizona Marlins. In 2007 Coach Haney made the transition to high school athletics starting up the Williams Field High School swimming team. In 2007 WFHS had just 14 swimmers. The program has grown to include 45 swimmers and divers in Assistant Coach Heather Potocki Coach Potocki has been in the pool her whole life, growing up with a large pool in her Michigan backyard and athletic older brothers. She began swimming club in the off-season in 1996 where she learned the techniques of the different strokes. Coach Potocki then joined her middle school swim team in 1997 and continued all through out high school. She attended the University of Michigan Summer Swim Camps in 1997 and 2000, learning even more about technique and improving times. She also was a volunteer with her old middle school swim team, helping swimmers with their technique. At the beginning of her junior year in high school, Coach Potocki had a surgery that prevented her from swimming, but she became the manager of the girls swim team that season, where she learned many managerial aspects of swimming. Though she never made it to States, Coach Potocki graduated high school performing her best in the pool. Central Michigan University didn't have a swim team, but they had swimmers that formed a group that met and swam almost daily. During her first year of teaching at San Tan Elementary, she co-coached Cross Country during the school year. This is her third year teaching at Williams Field High School, and her second year coaching swim for Williams Field. Assistant Coach Ryan Anderson Coach Ryan Anderson is a graduate of Gilbert Schools. He began his swim career at age 6. He attended Gilbert High School and was on the swim team all four years. He was a team captain and qualified for state each year. Coach Anderson swam many different events and set the Fiesta region record in the 100 yd Butterfly his senior year. After completing his Associates degree at MCC he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he instructed other Marines how to swim and certified Marines for their swimming qualifications. Coach Anderson recently finished his enlistment and is now continuing his education at Arizona State University. Diving Coach Tom Wright Returning Dive Coach Tom Wright was Illinois first ever 3 time consecutive state diving champion and had the 3rd highest point total in history at the Illinois State Meet. Ranked 2nd nationally coming out of high school, Coach Wright finished 2nd at the Big Ten Championship. He competed at nationals since the age of 14 and dove under coaches from

Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, LSU as well as bronze medalist Ron Merriott from the 1984 LA Games. Two years ago Wright coached the State Diving Champion in the 4A Div II State Championships. TEAM REQUIREMENTS Clearance You must be cleared through the Athletic Office before you can participate. This means you must have your physical completed and your participation fee paid. Extra Equipment Needed You must have running shoes, black basketball-style shorts, a red t-shirt, practice suit, practice cap, goggles, and towel. Academic Eligibility Each athlete must be passing all classes and also demonstrate appropriate behavior to be considered eligible for competition. Every student-athlete will submit on a weekly basis a grade/behavior monitoring sheet to the coach. Any D or F grade or poor class behavior will deem the student-athlete ineligible for the following week s competitions. Ineligibility is for one week and students can regain eligibility by turning in a new monitoring sheet with passing grades and good behavior ratings. Non-cut does not mean non-commitment The swimming (not diving) team follows a no cut policy. Any child who wishes to participate is on the team. All students who are on the team must attend all practices this includes early release days and fall break workouts 10/11 through 10/18, receive passing grades ( C or better) and demonstrate good behavior to remain on the team. ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Parents are not allowed on the pool deck before, during, or after practice unless it is an emergency. If you have a question that cannot wait to be answered in an , please wait until after practice when the coach is exiting the facility. Understand and respect that there are appropriate topics and times for discussion between coach and parents a. Ask to speak to the coach at a time that is productive to conversation b. Speak specially about your child and yours only c. Understand that coaches are not at liberty to discuss playing time, strategy, and other students d. Follow this necessary sequence when addressing concerns: 1. Specific Area Coach 2. Head Coach 3. Athletic Director 4. District Athletic Director Please follow this order so your concerns might be addressed as quickly as possible. Athletes should be picked up no later than 10 minutes after practice is over. Athletes must use the provided school transportation to and from all athletic competitions regardless of the proximity to your home. There is no exception to this rule. Please purchase team apparel. Swimmers and Divers are not permitted to receive awards at competitions in anything other than the team t-shirt and shorts/pants in school colors (no ball caps, swim caps, goggles, etc.). Competition in meets is determined by many factors. These factors include grades, behavior/effort in class, practice attendance, skill level, fitness level, commitment and attitude. It is the sole discretion of the coach as to how much competition time an athlete receives in meets.

EXPECTATIONS: Below are the expectations the coaching staff has for all participants. 1. RESPONSIBILITY - Athletes are expected to be responsible. Responsibility to Self: All students are expected to make the most of all of their school experiences. Academic studies, participation in extracurricular activities including sports prepare them for life as an adult. WFHS students are expected to take full advantage of these opportunities. They are expected to be responsible and thoughtful when choosing activities. Students should not overburden themselves or choose activities with conflicting schedules. Once they have chosen swimming/diving, student athletes are expected to develop their skills to the best of their ability and give their best efforts in every practice and competition. Athletes are expected to attend all practice sessions and scheduled meets. If an athlete fails to attend practice for any reason they will not be allowed to participate in the following competition (including State Championships). Responsibility to WFHS: Athletes are often very visible representatives of their schools among the student body, the community, and other communities. Swimmers and Divers are expected to honor the tradition of excellence at Williams Field High School by displaying conduct that contributes to school spirit and community pride. Responsibilities to Others: Athletes are expected to make an uncompromised commitment to uphold team rules and to attend & participate fully in all practices and competitions. Each team member is expected to contribute to the success of the team by taking individual responsibility for demonstrating a consistent, strong work ethic and by being a positive influence on the many relationships on the team. Athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that honors the loyalty and support shown by their families, friends, volunteer workers, and boosters. Athletes are expected to abide by all Williams Field High School Policies, Rules and Regulations. These may be found on the school website. 2. KNOWLEDGE - Athletes are expected to be informed. Team Information: Athletes are to keep themselves informed on all aspects of team business. Coaches and staff members will make every effort to get information printed into handouts. However, we hold athletes fully accountable for seeking out information and following up when necessary. Athletes are responsible for processing all team paperwork as required. Conditioning and Skills: Athletes are expected to listen in practice and follow up when clarification is necessary. Coaches will hold athletes accountable for knowing the conditioning principles and swimming/diving technique information presented at practices. 3. CONTRIBUTION - Athletes are expected to give back and "pay it forward". Athletes are expected to display caring and honorable behavior out of the pool and to be a positive influence in the community. Athletes are expected to give of their time and skills for the betterment of the sport of swimming/diving, and through swimming, the community. Athletes are expected to contribute by helping as requested at the pool during practice and meets; and to encourage the next generation of swimmers and divers. INJURIES AND ILLNESSES Students are encouraged to inform the trainer on site of any injury they incur. Should the student s condition require medical attention the parent/guardian will be notified. If a doctor holds the student out of practice or competition, then a doctor s note allowing the student to resume participation MUST be presented to his/her coach, the trainer, and the athletic director prior to being allowed to rejoin the team in practice or in competition. When a student is sick but attends school the student is expected to attend practice. If the student cannot swim, they should be present to observe practice. When an athlete sits out of practice due to illness they will receive partial credit towards their practice points (see awards information). DICIPLINE See the Athletic Code of Conduct for policies regarding discipline.

TAX DONATIONS Funding is an important part of athletics. In order for our program to continue its growth and success, new training equipment and apparel that is not funded by the district needs to be purchased. Please use the district Tax Credit Donation form to contribute financially to the team. For every dollar you donate you will reduce the amount of your tax liability to the state (dollar for dollar match). For example, if you donate $200, your state tax credit will be $200. When you file your taxes in the spring your state tax bill will be $200 less, or if you are receiving a refund your refund will be $200 more. Either way, you will are sending tax dollars directly to WFHS Swimming and Diving instead of the Arizona Revenue Service. All Arizona tax payers qualify to donate and receive a tax credit in the amount of their donation (up to $200 for single taxpayers or $400 for married couples filing jointly). POST/PRE SEASON TRAINING There are many options available for swimmers to continue training out of high school season. Club Teams: Seville Mesa Aquatics DTAC Town of Gilbert Summer Swim and Dive Team: The Town of Gilbert has a summer league team at WFHS pool. The cost is $75 for the entire summer. In the past preseason has run from 5/11 through 5/14 and the regular season has run from 5/26 to 7/16. Registration for the team begins in early April for residents of Gilbert and mid-april for non-residents. Athletes from 5-17 years of age are welcomed. WFHS Preseason Workouts: This summer we had pre-season practice beginning Monday July 18 th. Practices will be held Monday through Thursday from 7:00-9:15am. All preseason work-outs are free of charge to WFHS swimmers and incoming freshmen, tax credit donations to WFHS Swimming are welcomed (forms available on the HUSD website). Preseason training is not a requirement to be on the team but is highly recommended.

Swimmers Responsibilities 10 Training Habits In addition to developing the swimming skills of the athletes, the coaches strive to help the athletes develop a sense of respect for their teammates, their coaches, and themselves. We do this by emphasizing the 10 specific training habits. These training habits are used by all of our training groups. 1. Support Your Teammates: Not just by not being negative, but by being actively positive. In doing this, swimmers learn it feels great not just receiving praise, but to give it as well. 2. Positive Personal Attitude: I can t, I won t and That s too hard are unacceptable statements on the WFHS deck. Whining and negative comments are disrespectful to the coach, teammates, and yourself. Positive selftalk leads positive behaviors and to self-esteem. 3. Effort: This means doing things as they are asked. 4. Listening: Listening and hearing are two very different things. Really listen to the coaches and your teammates. Listening to the coach is an obvious necessity. Learning to listen to each other is an important life skill. Learning from your peers is a lifelong and sometimes difficult process. If you learn to do it at 6 years old, all the better. 5. Be On Time: This means on the deck, in their suits, with their caps, goggles, water bottle, and equipment, ready to go when practice begins. Another part of being on time is coming prepared for dryland workouts. Athletes need to come in running shoes, black shorts/red shirt, and have a water bottle everyday. Being on time and coming prepared teaches responsibility and respect for their time and the time of others. 6. Check the Website/Take Flyers Home: Each swimmer is responsible for getting the information they need to participate in WFHS events. The remaining four training habits are specific swimming skills. These are skills that are worked on in all training groups. The important thing when working on a habit is that the swimmers at least attempt to do it correctly at every given opportunity. Eventually, they won t be able to do it incorrectly if they try. Please remember, Practice doesn t make perfect Practice makes habit. Only perfect practice makes perfect. 7. Streamlines: Every push off the wall is to be in a tight streamline position. 8. Turns: Fast, legal turns at every wall. 9. Finishes: Good, reaching finish at the completion of every swim. 10. Wall To Wall: Swimmers complete each swim using the prescribed stroke without putting their feet down until they have executed a proper finish. All Black Hawks, from the newest to the most experienced, are expected to follow some basic training guidelines. All swimmers are expected to arrive at the pool completely dressed with top, bottom, and shoes. They should not leave the pool until they are again completely dressed. All swimmers are expected to have cap, goggles, water bottle, and towel with them. All swimmers should have a spare set of cap and goggles in their bags in case of loss or breakage. Black Hawks are expected to take care of their bodies. This includes eating enough of the proper foods, dressing appropriately, using sunscreen, and getting enough rest. This also means that the athletes are not to take unnecessary risks, such as rollerblading and biking without protective gear, and sunbathing or water-skiing the week before championship meets! Parents, please help the coaching staff help your swimmers. Be supportive of the swimmers efforts to adhere to the 10 Training Habits. Failure to adhere to the 10 Training Habits will result in removal from practice!
