4 AZ REQUIREMENTS STARTER Age 18 Register as USA Swimming Non-Athlete Member Background Check Level 2 Athlete Protection Training Starter Clinic Shadow 5 On-Deck Training Sessions, 2 starters Score 80 on the on-line Stroke & Turn Judge Test (usaswimming.org) Deck Check

5 STARTING You are on the swimmer s side: all swimmers More than three words Many moving parts. There are naturals and achievers. Your mistakes are out in the open.

6 YOU MUST BE PREPARED Alert Unburdened Know the people, the Course and the Equipment

7 ALERTNESS & CLARITY Consistency Mind must be clear and able to focus Plenty of rest Don t over-reach Can do only starts well.

8 THE PEOPLE Review the meet flyer Discuss protocols with deck referee Check for disabled swimmers & others

9 THE COURSE Walk the starting area: obstructions and hazards, adequate room for timers, staging next heat. Check pool depth at both ends. Starts from one or both ends Check if recall rope is needed, where placed, release. Determine where you will stand

10 THE EQUIPMENT Check position of start stand Visible to all swimmers Charged & plugged in. Properly connected Test start microphone. Strobe, recall, scoreboard start Check sound system, speakers location, audibility Check blocks for stability, traction, position,legality

12 THE START More moving parts than you d think Consistency is key No radios or earphones Stand in same place: back starts, forward starts Attentive to field before & during start

13 STARTING PROTOCOL BEFORE THE START Locate the next heat of swimmers. Notify referee of unusual conditions. At series of short whistles from referee: pick-up mic and position yourself for the start. Must be able to see entire field equally.

14 STARTING PROTOCOL DURING THE START When Referee blows 1 long (2 in backstroke) whistle, you are holding mic in one hand in stable position. At handover, observe field for stability &, position at front of block. Lane 3 Feet to the front or Lower toes NEVER take your eyes off the firld. When ready, you say, Take your Mark. Calm, reassuringly positive, in control Evenly with No accent or accents Patiently observe the field. Release when set.

15 INCIDENTAL MOVEMENT & FALSE STARTS A false start is the swimmer starting before the start signal. Incidental movement is not starting movement Starting movement before the signal is illegal. Each swimmer responsible for self only. Wait for them to come set, stand-up if too long. Falling into pool is not an automatic DQ. Repeat: Take your mark. Issue warning to lane upon second offense.

16 FALSE START PROTOCOL Record lane number on starter s copy of heat sheet Approach referee with I have one. (No mention of lane.) If referee has same lane noted in writing, it s a confirmed false start. Referee notifies admin official and start-end S & T for notification.

17 STARTING PROTOCOL AFTER THE START Keep mic at mouth until all swimmers surface What s a recall: Extraordinary occurrence dishevels field s start: flash, horn Starter tells ref i m recalling, waits for ok. Press button again Swimmers receive option to keep time or re-swim, when ref determines.

18 TAKING ORDER OF FINISH In Arizona the starter is responsible for taking Order of Finish. Look at heat leaders after last turn to get oriented to lanes. Do not look away from pool til all in. After all in, write lane # s in order of finish in a column to right of heat. Record only what you saw, do not copy scoreboard. Too close to calls get circled or a between them
