1 SWIMMING & DIVING EXAMINATION Instructions: Only the answer sheet of this examination will be sent to the grader. You retain the questions for further study. Since correction is by machine scanning or perforated key, you must use care in clearly marking correct spaces on the answer sheet according to directions. Some questions are multiple choice. Please select only one answer for multiple-choice questions. For true-false questions, mark "A" for true and "B" for false. A violation of the rules may cause a competitor to be disqualified from the event. 2. A preliminary is a competition designed to advance qualifiers to another round of competition. 3. Exhibition events shall always be conducted immediately following the final heat/round of the respective competitive event. 11. For all meets, coaches shall submit the names and order of swimmers for the relay no later than when competitors are called to the starting platform for the respective heat/ race. 12. In a championship meet, if a declared false start is provided by the swimmer or coach within the specified time, that swimmer's previous performances are nullified. 13. When a diving referee, prior to the start of a round, observes a diver wearing jewelry for a second time in the meet, the referee shall instruct the diver to remove the jewelry before he/she is eligible for competition, provided there is not unnecessary delay of the meet. 14. A 500-yard freestyle swimmer opts not to use a lap-counting system, but wants his/her teammate to shout out the lap count from the end of the pool. The swimmer is not disqualified; however, the lap counter shall be removed from the end of the pool. 15. In relay events, a total of eight individuals per team must be designated. 16. In championship meets, a competitor who has officially been entered in an event, but who does not show up for that event, shall be disqualified from only that event. 17. After the start of the 200-medley relay, the referee notices that a breaststroker, when leaving the starting platform, is bleeding from the foot. The referee is required to stop the race. 18. It is noticed that the fourth swimmer of the 400-freestyle relay has a bloody nose while he/she is swimming. The referee is required to stop the race. 19. At any time, swimmers may compete in a swimsuit that covers the arms. 20. A swimmer may not wear a one-piece suit under another onepiece suit during competition, unless authorized by the state association. 21. During the 50-freestyle, the referee observes a competitor in the race wearing jewelry for the second time during competition. The referee shall notify the swimmer and the coach that the swimmer is disqualified from that event and is ineligible to compete in subsequent competition until he/she is compliant with the jewelry rule. 22. Water temperature (Fahrenheit) is recommended to be no less than 75 degrees or no more than 85 degrees. 23. Female competitors may not wear a two-piece suit during competition. 24. Swimmers are called to the blocks and it is noticed that a swimmer is wearing jewelry for the second time in the meet. The referee: a. asks the swimmer to take the earring out again. b. stops the meet and asks the coach to request that the swimmer remove the earring. c. disqualifies the swimmer only after the coach has been notified. d. disqualifies the swimmer.

For dual confirmation on a relay takeoff, a judge must be assigned to observe every lane. 36. The referee is responsible to be available, if necessary, for a premeet meeting with coaches in non-championship meets. 37. By rules, the minimum number of officials required for a dual meet is three. 38. The recorder is responsible to tabulate diving scores. 39. The relay takeoff judge will first observe the incoming swimmer's hand, followed by the feet of the swimmer on the starting platform. 40. It is recommended that officials dress uniformly in white attire or such other attire that is approved by the state association. 41. The sounding device for the 500-yard freestyle shall not be a pistol capable of discharging live ammunition. 42. During a race, the turn judge will examine the last stroke prior to the turn. 43. The meet management software operator shall report to the head judge. 44. Swimming Events 67. For the 100-yard butterfly event, upon the command "Take your mark," swimmers shall assume a stationary position with their foot/feet at the front edge of the starting platform or pool edge. 68. For in-water relay starts, the first swimmer must be stationary and have at least one hand in contact with the end wall until the starting device is activated. 69. With the permission of the referee or head timer, a swimmer may start in the water. 70. A breaststroker may be completely submerged for a distance of not more than 15 meters after the start and each turn. By that point, some part of the head must have broken the surface of the water. 71. When using whistle preparatory commands for a backstroke start, if a swimmer has not responded to the referee's first long whistle, the referee may say, "step in." 72. The butterfly leg of the 200-yard medley relay must finish with both hands on the wall simultaneously and in the same plane. 73. Once called to the starting platform, the lead-off swimmer in the 400-yard freestyle relay may decide to change his/her order with any teammate. 74. In the backstroke prior to the command "Take your mark" and until the feet leave the wall following the starting signal, the swimmer's feet, including the toes, shall not be above or curling over the lip of the gutter or pool edge. 75. When automatic timing/judging equipment is used, the swimmer, in order to finish the race, must contact the touch pad or end wall between the lane lines where the touch pad should be located when in its proper position.
4 76. Once the command "Take your mark" has been given, a swimmer with mild twitching of the heel and no other motion shall result in a false start for the swimmer. 77. For in-water starts in a relay, the second, third and fourth swimmers need only maintain contact with the end wall with a foot until the previous swimmer has finished. 78. The lead-off swimmer on a relay may be credited with an official time for his/her relay leg even when the relay is disqualified due to a stroke violation by one of the subsequent relay swimmers. 79. In the freestyle, any body position is permitted, but only the flutter kick is allowed. 80. When using dual confirmation, upon observing a false start, the referee and/or starter shall record in writing the lane or lanes of the infraction. 81. A swimmer misses the wall during the turn of the 500-yard Upon realizing that the wall was missed, the swimmer sculls back to the wall, touches the wall and continues to swim. This is legal. 82. 5 TISCA/NFHS Swimming Official's Examination There are 84 questions Swimming Officials are required to answer and they must be correct in a minimum of 67 of those, 79.7%. Some are true or false (A for true, B for false) and others multiple choice. There is only ONE correct answer for any single question. Double answers will be counted as incorrect. Please blacken the circle, preferably with a number two leaded pencil, you believe is the best correct answer to each question. You must be very careful to stay within the circle itself as the test will be graded with a key and off-center markings may be counted as incorrect.
