Tournament Schedule On Saturday, the Men s Doubles competition will start at 8:00 am. All Women s Doubles Events will commence as courts become available after 1 pm. On Sunday, The Mixed Doubles Age Group Events will start at 8:00 am. All Open Events (WSO, MSO and MXDO) are scheduled concurrently and will commence as courts become available after 1 pm. Please Note, due to ongoing last minute cancellations and pool adjustments, the final Tournament Competition Pools will be posted on the pickleballtournaments.com website, on Friday September 23 rd for the Saturday September 24 th events. All Sunday September 25 th events will be posted on this website, Saturday September 24th. All pool/bracket sheets will be posted prior to play on the corridor wall, located adjacent to the gym, eastside main entrance. Group Competition events e.g. (age, skill rating, mixed and open) will be assigned to dedicated courts. All courts will be numbered on the post side of each net, to facilitate identification. To minimize game disruption and facilitate player traffic logistics, On Deck seating areas are being assigned by Zones (A- H). Orange Posters noting the various Zones will be posted around the gym for ease of identification. All On Deck Players waiting for their assigned court are requested to sit and remain in their assigned Zone. The On Deck seating Zones will be posted in the corridor outside of the main Gym with the pool sheets. A select number of group events will play on three courts in the warm up room. The entrance is via the main corridor, immediately adjacent to the main Gym, west door. An additional On Deck Zone has also been designated in this room, for teams with scheduled matches in this room. The sliding wall panel doors connecting this room to the main gym will not be open, to avoid errant balls landing in the main gym courts. Please verify your assigned Zone area along with your posted pool matches. Players are responsible for getting to their assigned Zone seating areas so the matches can begin on time. FORMAT OF PLAY Tournament ball is the lime green jug ball. At each game, the designated team server must wear his or her serving wrist band, provided compliments of ONIX. IFP Rules will apply. Please visit the following website for an official rule refresher. Some IPF Rules to keep top of mind: 4.A. Serve Motion. The serve must be made with an underhand stroke so that contact with the ball is made below waist level (waist is defined as the navel level). 4.A.1. Underhand Defined. The arm must be moving in an upward arc and the paddle head shall be below the wrist when it strikes the ball (paddle head is that part of the paddle excluding handle. The highest point of the paddle head cannot be above any part of line formed where the wrist joint bends). (
3 4.B. Server Position. At the beginning of the serve, both feet must be behind the baseline. At the time the ball is struck, at least one foot must be on the playing surface or ground behind the baseline. During the serve, when the ball is struck, the server s feet shall not: Touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the sideline. Touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the centerline. Touch the court, including the baseline. 4.I. Readiness. Serves shall not be made until the receiver is ready and the score has been called. Serving before the score is called shall result in a fault, and loss of serve. The referee shall call the score when he or she determines that the players should be in position to resume play. (Revised March 1, 2015). 12.J.5 When net systems have a horizontal bar that may include a center base: If the ball hits the horizontal bar or the center base before going over the net, it is a fault. If the ball goes over the net and then hits the horizontal bar, the ball is still in play. If the ball goes over the net and then hits the center base or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar before touching the court, it is a let and must be replayed. 11.A. Normal Time-Outs. A player or team is entitled to 2 time-outs per game; each time-out period shall last only 1 minute. Then play must be resumed or another time- out must be called by either side. Time-outs may never be called once the ball is in play or the server has started the serving motion. 11.B. Injury Time-Outs. If a player is injured during a match, that player may call an injury time-out. The referee must agree that an injury did take place and that the player is not just stalling to rest or recuperate. If the referee agrees, then that player will be allowed no more than 15 minutes of rest during the injury time-out. If the player cannot resume play after the 15-minute injury time-out period, the match shall be awarded to the opponents. 12.D. Broken or Cracked Ball. Play continues until the end of the rally. If, in the judgment of the referee, a broken or cracked ball affected the outcome of the rally, the referee shall call for a replay. 12.E. Injury During Game. Rally continues to its conclusion, despite an injury to any of the players. 13.D. Forfeited Matches. A forfeit is a loss by default. It usually occurs because a player or team did not show up on time, because of player injury, or for misconduct. A player or team forfeiting a match for any reason shall lose the match. The other player or team shall receive the appropriate point score or advance to the next level. Non-officiated Round Robin Matches Each serving team will call the score before serving. The non-volley zone faults, may be called by any player on either team. Players will call the lines on their side of the court. No player should question an opponent s call unless asked. An opponent s opinion, if requested, shall be accepted. Spectators should not be consulted on any line calls. A Gym Marshall will be assigned to designated courts and will hand out your game score sheet. Please return your signed match score sheet immediately to the Gym Marshall, so the results can be transported via a runner, to the Central Control desk, for immediately data entry. Each Gym Marshall will identify which On Deck players, seated in the assigned wait Zone area, can proceed to the vacant court with their game score sheet. Following each game, a member of each team must sign their game sheet, acknowledging their agreement with the final match score. Please verify the final score and winning team name before signing your post game score sheet. Your signature endorses the results on the score sheet and is final!
4 A timed 2 minute warm up will be allowed prior to all games. Please be respectful of this requirement. Also, please finalize all post match discussions off the courts, so the next scheduled match can proceed. We wish to complete each day s schedule in a timely manner. Officiated Round Robin Matches The Referee will meet with players either at their on deck Zone or at courtside. The Referee will instruct the players on the need to wait for the call of the score before serving, or a fault will incur. Once the score has been called, it signals to each team, that play is ready to resume. The Referee will also point out any court hindrances and instruct players on the line-call duties of the Referee, players and Line judges, if present. The Referee will call all non-volley line infractions and baseline foot faults. Players will call the lines on their respective side of the court. Any player may appeal a call to the Referee in an officiated match. In Medal Round matches, the Line judges will make the sideline and baseline calls. The Chief Referee is the final authority on all match disputes and has the full support of the Tournament Director. All events are divided into brackets by age and/or skill and into one or more pools of 3 or more teams/individuals. Where there are sufficient numbers, the brackets will be divided into pools. Please note, where there is less than 3 teams/individuals in a bracket, such a bracket will be combined with another same skill rated age group bracket. Brackets and Pool Matches Brackets/Pools will play Round Robin matches with every team/individual in their bracket/pool. All pool matches are self officiated and all RR matches consist of 1game to 15 (win by 1). The top teams of each Round Robin will proceed to Elimination/Medal Round play. All Elimination matches prior to the Medal rounds, will be played as 1 game to 15 (win by 2), and will also be self refereed, should a Referee not be immediately available. After completion of any Elimination matches, the remaining teams will compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Medal rounds. All Medal round matches will be refereed with line judges as available. The Medal Matches will consist of a Bronze medal match of 1 game to 15 (win by 2). The Gold/Silver medal matches will be determined by the first 2 of 3 games won and played to 11 (win by 2). Position in Round Robin play will be determined first, by number of wins. In the case of tie for a position to proceed to Medal/Elimination rounds, the total points scored in Round Robin matches will be used to decide who will advance. If a tie still exists, then the head to head score will be used to determine position. FORMAT for a Bracket of 3 Teams All three teams will play each other twice in a Double Round Robin format. After completion of the Round Robin, the third place team will play the second place team for the Bronze medal. The winner of that match will play the first place team for Gold/Silver medal. FORMAT for a Single Bracket of 4 or more teams
5 Each team will play each of the teams once, in their bracket. The top 4 teams will play for medals. In Elimination matches, the 1 st position team will play the 4 th position team, and the 2nd position team will play the 3 rd position team. Winners of these two matches will play a Gold/Silver medal match. The two losing teams will play a Bronze medal match. FORMAT for MORE THAN ONE POOL of TEAMS in a Bracket Each team will play each team in their pool once, in Round Robin play. The top two teams in each pool will advance to Elimination/Medal Rounds. All teams that advance to the Elimination/Medal Rounds will play in a Single Elimination Bracket until the last 4 teams play Gold/Silver and Bronze medal matches. The Tournament Director reserves the right to change any of the above formats and/or information based on Player participation. SAFETY AND COURT ETIQUETTE Please be respectful of the matches in play, when arriving or exiting your court. Do not interrupt the play! Wait until the ball currently in play is dead, before quickly crossing the back the courts. Do not retrieve a ball into any adjacent court! The ball is immediately dead when entering another court. Alert the players in the adjacent court by announcing to them, Ball in your Court. The rally in the adjacent court where the ball is landing, should stop immediately and their ball should be reserved. Should an injury occur during play, please immediately signal the Gym Marshall who will request first aid assistance. The first aid room is also the volunteer room, the second room in the corridor adjacent to the Central Control room. Ice and a first aid kit will be available as needed, to relieve an injury. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is available on site. Please, do not exit the gym via the emergency exit doors located across from the gym south end courts, to access the outside of the building. It will set off the building alarms! TOURNAMENT CONDUCT The Referee is empowered to call technical fouls and to forfeit a match if an individual player's behavior is detrimental to the tournament. Also to be noted, the Tournament Director has the authority to expel any player for misconduct regardless of how many technical fouls have been received. We would like to acknowledge the MANY volunteers who are enabling this tournament, the Pan Am Centre staff and ALL of our Sponsors who are supporting this event. Special acknowledgement goes to the City of Markham for their Celebrate Markham grant! WE WISH EVERYONE TWO SUCCESSFUL FUN FILLED DAYS OF COMPETITION!!!!
