1 CHANGING LIVES THROUGH TENNIS Activity & Impact Report 2016

2 Junior Wheelchair Competition Nottingham WELCOME It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our Tennis Foundation Activity & Impact Report, my first as Chair. It has been another very busy year for the Foundation in our quest to make tennis inclusive and accessible to all. It has also been one of the most memorable, with the fantastic successes from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games still fresh in our minds. Not only are achievements like these a showcase of our national sporting talent, but they help to inspire the nation and drive participation in tennis. With that in mind, I shall hand you over to our Executive Director, Geoff Newton, to introduce you to the work of the Tennis Foundation and our achievements this year. Baroness Margaret Ford Chair Tennis Foundation Welcome. We are the Tennis Foundation, Great Britain s leading tennis charity. Though our work is wide ranging, it is connected and underpinned by our purpose and our impact put simply, we aim to transform lives through tennis. Our mission is to open up tennis, and its many health and social benefits, to anyone and everyone, no matter what their age, ability or background and, crucially, to then go beyond this and use tennis as a vehicle to help them maximise their personal potential. This mission is brought to life through our inspirational work focussed on our three priority target groups of disabled people, young people in education and young people in lower socioeconomic communities. Our role has never been more important than it is today. Both the Government and Sport England have highlighted the importance of increasing activity amongst groups that have traditionally been less involved in physical activity. These are exactly the types of individuals we exist to help for whom we aim to create opportunities. Thanks to our growing network of venues, more disabled people are now playing tennis than ever before. We also provide opportunities for competitive play, from local competitions to major international tournaments. The highlight of the year though was undoubtedly the Rio Paralympic Games, where we won an incredible six medals in wheelchair tennis more than any other nation. Elsewhere, the efforts we have made to build a strong base for our work with young people in education are paying dividends. Alongside the support we provide to schools, colleges and universities to get more people playing tennis, we are now also delivering targeted programmes that make a real difference to the lives of those involved. The work we do helps our beneficiaries develop and flourish in so many unexpected ways. There is no better example of that than our exciting SERVES programme. Through this, we help to break down barriers and see tennis played in places it has never been played before taking it into the heart of urban and disadvantaged communities, with sites ranging from mosques to prisons. The following pages give an insight into how we have helped transform lives through tennis over the last year. I d like to thank all those and there are many who have supported us in this impactful work. We are excited about the future, and know that there are multiple opportunities to expand and develop our activities. Equally, we know that there are significant financial challenges we will need to overcome in order to realise this undoubted potential. But, they are challenges worth taking on, because we know the impact it will have. Geoff Newton Executive Director Tennis Foundation 2 3

22 SERVES Session - London YOUNG PEOPLE IN URBAN & DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES TENNIS ANYWHERE QUITE SIMPLY, TENNIS HAS A UNIQUE POWER TO TRANSFORM LIVES. THIS IS WHY, THROUGH OUR GROUND-BREAKING SPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, SERVES, THE TENNIS FOUNDATION IS DETERMINED TO TAKE TENNIS TO PEOPLE WHO DON T NORMALLY GET THE CHANCE TO PLAY IT, OR WHO THINK THAT TENNIS IS NOT FOR THEM. MIKE BAIN DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY TENNIS TENNIS FOUNDATION WHAT WE DO The Tennis Foundation s innovative work with young people in the heart of urban and disadvantaged communities aims to: 1. Use tennis to better engage young people with their local community 2. Provide opportunities to develop valuable life skills both on and off the tennis court 3. Build their confidence, health and employment prospects 42 43

23 SERVES Session - Bradford YOUNG PEOPLE IN URBAN & DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES YUNIS S STORY Manchester SERVES The Tennis Foundation s SERVES programme takes tennis into the heart of urban and disadvantaged communities, opening up tennis to many more people who may not otherwise have had the chance to play. Young people in disadvantaged communities can face multiple challenges including unemployment and poorer health. They often have fewer opportunities to get involved in sport and reap the health and social benefits that being active can bring. Through SERVES, we are using tennis as a tool to engage communities to combat some of these challenges. In delivering the project we work with key strategic partners with national scale who know their communities inside out. We recruit enthusiastic and inspiring people to champion our programme and lead the tennis sessions. Local ownership is critical, both for the initial engagement and the long-term success of the activity. We also know that every community is different, which means that our approach is flexible and bespoke. HOW IT WORKS SERVES targets young people in urban and disadvantaged areas across three age groups primary, secondary and 17+ Sites identified in partnership with key strategic partners SERVES Tennis Activators recruited from the local community, with each receiving a free half-day training course to learn how to deliver tennis in non-traditional tennis environments Sites provided with a free pop-up tennis court as well as mini tennis equipment and advice Working together with our national partners, they develop a programme of activities informed by their unique insights and tailored to each specific community, such as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups and exclusively women and girls sessions Selected sites are included in the SERVES Learning Programme, empowering young people to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to improve health, self-confidence, employability and community cohesion OUR 2016 FOCUS In 2016, our main goals were to: establish 50 SERVES projects across the country build an average of 50 weekly participants per SERVES project identify and train Tennis Activators identify 10 to 15 Tennis Activator Mentors to support our Activators pilot the SERVES Learning Programme in five venues develop social impact targets during the pilot phase of our learning programme. Khizra Mosque is one of our established SERVES sites. Using equipment provided by the Tennis Foundation, five Tennis Activators deliver bi-weekly tennis sessions for the local young people following their studies at their mosque. These sessions are attended by more than 30 young people every week, including Yunis. I VE NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO PLAY TENNIS BEFORE, AND I DEFINITELY NEVER THOUGHT I D BE ABLE TO PLAY RIGHT HERE AT MOSQUE AFTER STUDIES, WITH MY FRIENDS. They also create tailored programmes, ensuring people from all backgrounds are able to participate. IMPACT IN 2016: The Great British Tennis Weekend campaign, in its fourth year, saw 1,600 events take place at over 1,000 unique venues and almost 60,000 people play tennis for free 62% of people surveyed said they had played more often since attending a Great British Tennis Weekend event and 37% said they had signed up to a regular coaching programme Tennis for Kids, a new campaign aimed at getting more children involved in the sport, was launched on the back of Great Britain s fantastic win in the 2015 Davis Cup. Through Tennis for Kids we provided 13,250 children with their first ever tennis experience in the form of six weeks free coaching. Each child was also given a free racket to ensure they could carry on playing with family and friends after the coaching had finished COACHING Coaching is a fundamental aspect of tennis development at all levels of ability, from eager beginners to seasoned experts, which is why we fund the LTA to support the training of tennis coaches and to ensure coaching excellence in Great Britain. IMPACT IN 2016: 2,938 new coaches received LTA qualifications at one of its five levels 1,100 coaches joined the re-launched British Tennis Coach Accreditation Scheme 875 coaches were trained to deliver the free coaching programme, Tennis for Kids COMPETITIONS Competitions are a great way to get people involved in tennis, bring communities together, build selfconfidence and improve communication.
