Core Offer Support #schoolstennis CASE STUDY Alison Turian PE CO-ORDINATOR Swavesey Primary School, Cambridgeshire Currently delivering Multi Skills and FUNdamentals for KS 1 & 2 How has this had an impact at your school? Pupils from Reception to Year 6 are introduced to appropriate sized rackets, for skill and game based activities. At the end of each tennis unit of work, all pupils participate in an intra house competition, whether it be skill based for younger pupils or game based for older. Selected pupils participate in the annual Year 3/4 School Games competition. Staff use the TF/ LTA drills and lesson plans in addition to the DVD supportive material to develop their knowledge and confidence in teaching tennis. Pupils have joined the local community tennis clubs, and the school provides an after school tennis club during the year. What is your experience of British Tennis schools programme so far? Attending the CPD training course, run through the School Sports Partnership has provided easy to follow resources required to teach a progressive scheme of work. The practical training for staff enabled the theory to be tried and tested prior to teaching in lessons. The DVD pack provided reinforces the written booklet and are useful for supporting staff in school. who may not feel confident teaching specific areas of tennis. The resource pack is easy to follow and can be mix and matched very easily. Supportive photographs and diagrams clarify instructions clearly. What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? In Primary PE lessons, I think the information provided is more than adequate to teach progressive lessons in both key stages. Additional CPD training is always beneficial, attending additional training in areas that would be relevant to curriculum teaching is something I would always be interested in. Using ideas that would be more practical within an after school sports club setting. 9 10

Core Offer Support #schoolstennis CASE STUDY Christine Dransfield HEAD COACH Greenhouse Sports, St. Paul s Way Trust School, East London CARDIO TENNIS Cardio Tennis is a tennis-inspired workout played to up-tempo music. It s a fun group activity that features drills and games to provide pupils of all abilities with a high energy workout, suitable for both disabled and non disabled pupils as well as those that haven t played before. SPE INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS SEC Currently delivering after-school, lunch and breakfast clubs every day for Greenhouse Sports. How has this had an impact at your school? Tennis is now fully embedded in the life of the school. Everyone is involved, from the Head Teacher to the Librarian! In the last year alone over a thousand hours of coaching were delivered. Tennis has made a positive impact in so many ways. Students are increasingly more confident, especially the girls, in trying new skills, taking on new tasks and not just on the court. They are gaining communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills alongside tennis skills which they are transferring to all areas of school. Tennis students are also attending school, on average, two more days than their peers. Tennis at school has changed our students perception of the game that it is not just for the elite. What is your experience of British Tennis schools programme so far? The programme has been a great resource for the Greenhouse Sports tennis at St Paul s Way Trust School. I have accessed courses such as Disability Awareness in Tennis and received tennis equipment for mini tennis. I have 4-5 teams competing in the National Schools League each year which provides a fun competitive tennis opportunity for my players. I run the Road to Wimbledon KS3 tournament every year which draws in a large number of entries. Last year we had 60 students compete, with many more invited to watch the finals, complete with strawberries and cream! We have also been very lucky to receive tickets to Wimbledon through the schools ballot - an amazing opportunity for our students. What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? 9 #schoolstennis SCHOOLS COMPETITION More than 60,000 primary, special and secondary school pupils take part in schools tennis competitions every year. These pupils enjoy a positive experience of tennis but also learn and develop a wide range of life skills. Competition doesn t have to mean five sets on a normal sized tennis court with a yellow ball. We have developed a range of competition formats to suit all ages and abilities. Fair Play Fair Play in tennis has always been an important value and the Tennis Foundation and LTA are committed to ensuring that the tennis environment is fair, open and inclusive at every level in the sport. Find out more at: Intra-School Competition Intra-school tennis competitions can take place in class, tutor or house groups either during lessons, or ideally as part of a year-round programme of activity. Lots of primary, special and secondary schools across Great Britain run informal tennis competitions during breakfast, lunchtime or after school clubs, using the resources and free equipment provided through British Tennis schools programme. A range of simple intra school competition formats are available, produced by the Youth Sport Trust, which are distributed to all schools that register with the School Games at: PRI SPE SEC OTHER SUPPORT & RESOURCES AVAILABLE School Games Tennis Toolkit An interactive CD-ROM, designed for teachers and the school sport infrastructure, to make running competition in schools as easy to run as possible. The toolkit contains more than 40 resources and templates, many of which can be edited. Download your free copy at: GET INVOLVED For more information, please contact your local School Games Organiser, Local Authority contact or regional LTA office - contact details on the back cover or available at: CASE STUDY Gavin Phillis SCHOOL GAMES ORGANISER Craven, North Yorkshire Currently delivering tennis for primary schools and linking with Skipton Tennis Centre What type of tennis lessons and other tennis activities are you currently delivering? Over the last 3 years I have successfully applied to the LTA for a small amount of funding to support the delivery of tennis in Craven, this has led to the following: Providing tennis teacher training courses to our local primary schools to build capacity, up skill primary teachers and increase their confidence in delivering tennis to their pupils We employed the local tennis club to deliver Tennis Leaders training to secondary school students to increase the local tennis workforce and develop their leadership skills. What has been the impact on the pupils and staff at your school? I worked with Skipton Tennis Centre and 3 secondary schools around the workforce development. We identified students to attend the Tennis Leaders training who would then go on to support competitions at local primary schools. They would build confidence and knowledge and then support the Level 2 School Games events at Skipton Tennis Centre. As well as targeting students we wanted to encourage and support teachers who could do some delivery within schools to prepare students for the competitions. I worked with the Tennis Foundation and LTA to deliver a Primary School Teacher Training Course that was accessed by 15 local primary schools. Over the last 3 academic years Skipton Tennis Centre and myself have delivered young leaders training to over 100 young people and 20 teachers have accessed the teacher training course. A number of the leaders have continued to volunteer at the tennis club, increasing their knowledge and supporting the coaches with holiday camps. The SGO and Skipton Tennis Centre link has allowed Skipton Tennis Centre to offer 22 primary schools a free 2 hour taster session in school to promote tennis, School Games Competitions and local tennis activity. This partnership work saw the 2014/2015 competitions increase to 15 teams in the year 3/4 competition and the 2015/2016 competitions increase from 1 event to 5 separate events, 2 were year 5/6 and 3 were for years 3/4. We had 25 primary schools some of which entered multiple teams. For the 2016/2017 academic year we have 5 competitions scheduled for years 3/4 and 5/6 and we are working together to offer a Years 1&2 participation festival. Following the positive results, Craven have been selected to recruit, train, develop and deploy the leaders for the North Yorkshire School Games Level 3 Finals. Skipton Tennis Centre now have more juniors than ever before and we are continuing to look at growing the game in Craven and we will be using the Ilkley Aegon challenger event to inspire the youngsters of Craven! What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? Further competitions, to continue with the good work we would like to ensure secondary school tennis is available for students when they leave primary school. Ensuring Secondary School Tennis is available for students when they leave Primary School

LEADERSHIP & VOLUNTEERING Young people can take on many roles within the delivery of tennis that will give them the skills to help prepare them for future careers and life experiences, making themselves more employable in the process. TENNIS LEADERS Tennis Leaders is the first step on the tennis and sport career pathway for volunteering and potentially, paid employment. Tennis Leaders is aimed at 13 years plus and the content is suitable for pupils and older juniors just starting out through to adult volunteers. There are five Tennis Leaders modules: Introduction to Tennis (3 hrs) Volunteering at your tennis venue (2 hrs) Leading a practice session (2 hrs) Helping at your school (2 hrs) Helping at a competition (2 hrs) Tennis Leaders can be delivered by qualified and active teachers as well as LTA Accredited Coaches (Level 3 upwards) without the need to go on any specific training. All you need is the Tutor Workbook which is available free of charge from your local LTA Regional Office (see contact details on back cover). GET INVOLVED! To order your free Tennis Leaders resources please contact your regional LTA office, contact details are available on the back cover or at: COACHING SPE SEC If you have pupils (aged 16+) that express a desire to get involved in coaching, their next step is to take the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Tennis. The course is the starting point for people who want to get involved in tennis and is aimed at those enthusiastic about tennis and keen to help assist with the delivery of tennis activities including mini tennis. If you re a teacher and keen to develop your own knowledge, and you hold a teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) specialising in PE, you can bypass Level 1 and take Level 2 straight away. A small grant scheme is available to Schools Tennis Member Schools and can be used to support teachers professional development (see page 21). For more information about coaching, please visit: OFFICIATING The LTA offers lots of opportunities for young people to train as competition organisers, umpires (line and chair) and referees. For more information about officiating, please visit: CASE STUDY Jo Tuck PE TEACHER Medina College, Newport, Isle of Wight Currently delivering tennis to students who now access some form of tennis in their PE curriculum throughout the year. How has this had an impact at your school? All of our school community have had their eyes opened to tennis. Many have had very little experience with this sport, and with limited opportunities to play in Newport, we have really brought this sport to the forefront of our PE delivery. We have shown that tennis is accessible to all. With lunch time clubs, after school training, feel good Fridays and inter-school tournaments we have seen a growing uptake to this wonderful sport. What is your experience of British Tennis schools programme so far? It s been incredible! We are so lucky to have been part of the School of Tennis programme - from ambassador training days, close liaison with our designated head coach, new equipment and even the trip to Wimbledon we have benefited hugely from this initiative. It really has broadened our sporting horizon! What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? Student leadership is an integral part of our PE ethos and we are excited to look at future opportunities for our Tennis Ambassadors. We work with 2 other cluster schools on the School of Tennis programme to formulate training days and are looking at how we can take the next step in gaining coaching qualifications for our ambassadors. We are very excited about including Cardio Tennis into our fitness lessons and excited to work with our tennis coach to give us the know how as to how we can deliver this successfully in our lessons. 19

Membership brings a wide range of benefits, including: 10% discount off tennis equipment on the Zsig website Monthly Schools Tennis Newsletter Eligibility to enter into the Wimbledon Ticket Ballot Eligibility to apply to a bi-annual small grants scheme Priority/free access to some resources GIFTED & TALENTED British Tennis has produced a range of resources to help players, parents and coaches discover, support and develop gifted and talented young people to succeed in tennis. Talent Attraction: We suggest all coach-led activity that takes place in schools should be used as a talent attraction exercise, getting more young people interested and excited by tennis. Activity in schools should be open and accessible to all pupils in the selected classes / year groups. Talent Identification & Talent Development: Further talent ID and development should then take place in a recognised tennis venue, where expert coaches and carefully designed programmes meet the needs of talented juniors. Those who show some ability and aptitude for the game can be put forward by their local coach to county based talent ID days, which are run by a team of Talent and Performance Coordinators, located around the country. GET SET TO ACE IT! Developed in partnership with the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association, Get Set to Ace It! is a campaign that uses tennis to inspire young people to learn, build their skills and find the motivation to become more active. 14 School Club Links #schoolstennis WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A COACH Coaches can add huge value to the delivery of tennis in schools supporting teachers to deliver fun, progressive and inclusive activities. All coaches have different qualifications, experience and skills. Here are some key questions to ask a potential coach: Qualifications Do you have a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check? Do you have a minimum 1st4sport Level 2 in Coaching Tennis Award? Are you part of the LTA s Coach Accreditation Scheme? Experience Do you have previous experience of working in schools? Have you coached large, mixed ability groups in small spaces before? Have you previously worked with young people from diverse backgrounds as well as disabled pupils? Skills Do you support teachers development through team teaching? How do you differentiate activities to ensure all pupils progress and achieve? Do you help develop young leaders awards and encourage schools to compete in local competitions? EMPLOYING COACHES It is important to note that coaches working during curriculum time should always work under the direction of a designated teacher and should support the up-skilling of school staff rather than displacing them. For more information on the effective deployment of coaches working in schools, please visit: The LTA Coaching Pathway USING YOUR PRIMARY PE AND SPORT PREMIUM FUNDING OR PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING ON TENNIS Schools may want to think about using their PE and sport premium funding and/ or pupil premium funding as a way of supporting additional tennis activities. This can support schools to introduce new tennis activities or extend their existing provision. Some examples of how schools are using this funding, include: Providing quality assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport. For example, this could include: a 1st4sport Level 1 and / or Level 2 in Coaching Tennis Award. Employing qualified tennis coaches to work alongside teachers in lessons to increase their subject knowledge and confidence in PE. Employing qualified tennis coaches to deliver Out of School Hours Tennis Clubs and wider activity. We ve seen more teachers start to play tennis along with parents, they join the club, have group coaching or individual lessons, even adults who have never played before are keen to try. I ve seen children choose to play tennis in their free time, breaks, lunchtimes and after school, they just want to have a racket in their hand! What is your experience of British Tennis schools programme so far? As a LTA Schools Tennis Tutor I get to see first hand what a difference a short course with a pro tennis coach can make to teachers delivery in their schools. The free equipment bag and DVDs make teaching tennis simple and fun. What areas are you interested in advancing your knowledge in? As a Tennis Coach working with schools, it would be great to know more about how to help teachers further in delivering tennis. I d love to see every school with tennis nets up, rackets and a bucket of balls out each lunchtime letting children just have access to playing the game. I d like to see children and adults of all ages and abilities choose to play tennis regularly and enjoy it

#schoolstennis TARGETED PROGRAMMES THE TENNIS MENTORS: The vast majority of British Tennis schools programme is about putting rackets into the hands of young people and introducing them to our sport in a fun, inclusive and accessible way. But we are also very interested in the impact tennis can have on the lives of young people more widely: for example, how tennis can positively impact their selfconfidence, academic performance or behaviour. Beyond The Baseline is a free, secondary schools programme that uses tennis and inspirational tennis mentors to nurture pupils aspirations and put them on the path to achieving them. Our 16 Beyond The Baseline Tennis Mentors inspire pupils with their experiences of playing tennis and the obstacles they ve overcome both on and off the court. They will link their journey to four key Employability & Life skills Personal, Social, Creative and Thinking Skills that everyone needs to be able to achieve their goals. How it Works ANNA FITZPATRICK ALEX SLABINSKY JESSICA WEEKS NAOMI CAVADAY NATASHA KHAN NATHAN ROONEY YASMIN CLARKE 1 A Tennis Mentor visits a school three times over a 2-3 month period, sharing their tennis story with a small group of targeted pupils (chosen by the school). GEORGIE GENT 2 3 They inspire the pupils with how they achieved success in tennis as well as talk about four Employability & Life Skills they demonstrated on their journey. Pupils get active on-court and learn the skills of tennis whilst having fun and working with others. JADE WINDLEY KATIE O BRIEN 4 Pupils work with the rest of their Beyond The Baseline Project Group to plan, organise and deliver a tennis project. LISA WHYBOURN 5 The Tennis Mentor supports the pupils and helps them develop new skills. GET INVOLVED! For the 2018/19 academic year, applications to be involved in the Beyond The Baseline programme will be open to either Tennis Foundation Member Schools or schools on the School of Tennis programme. For more information, please visit: www. schoolstennis.org Personal, Social, Creative & Thinking Skills CONGRATULATIONS Personal, Social, Creative & Thinking Skills CONGRATULATIONS To find other opportunities to play tennis please visit: and: FOR TAKING PART IN THE FOR TAKING PART IN THE PROGRAMME AT YOUR SCHOOL PROGRAMME AT YOUR SCHOOL To find other opportunities to play tennis please visit: and: Beyond the Baseline has been amazing for all the pupils and it has had a huge impact on them. Wimbledon was amazing for so many reasons and I wish we could have captured it for OFSTED! We are going to carry on developing the group and work with the local tennis academy to give the girls the opportunities to develop their leadership skills through tennis support. The Year 4 tennis festival was amazing as the Beyond the Baseline group organised it for 50 pupils. We have had amazing feedback from the primary school pupils, teachers and our own pupils. We would love to be involved again please. LOUISE HUNT JAMES SHAW ANTONY COTTERILL JOSHUA WARD-HIBBERT JOCELYN RAE 29 30

Targeted Programmes #schoolstennis School of Tennis is an ambitious programme from the Tennis Foundation which aims to radically change the way tennis is delivered in secondary schools across Great Britain. The programme is a key part of the Tennis Foundation s wider Tennis in Education Strategy, launched in March 2015, which seeks to maximise young people s personal potential through tennis. The School of Tennis programme aims to take a bottom-up, young people centred approach, providing a national framework but with the flexibility for schools to design and deliver a tennis curriculum that best meets the needs of their pupils and wider school community. In 2016 we piloted the School of Tennis programme in 21 schools across the UK and commissioned the Sport Industry Research Centre (Sheffield Hallam University) to conduct an evaluation of the pilot programme. The findings indicated that the programme had been very successful, with 94% of stakeholders stating that there had been a significant impact and radical overhaul of tennis delivery within their school since the start of the programme. Additionally, qualitative feedback indicated that the programme was helping to put tennis back on the map in schools by breaking down any barriers and misconceptions regarding the sport, increasing the confidence and competence of both participants and deliverers, whilst also making tennis an attractive sporting option for schools. Based on the research findings we have been able to refine and scale up the programme - we will be supporting around 85 secondary schools in The programme will focus its support on four key themes: Teaching & Learning Student Leadership Facilities & Equipment Community Links Schools will receive a small funding grant to enable them to write, develop and deliver a three year Action Plan which will detail how they plan to radically change the way tennis is delivered in their school. GET INVOLVED! Over 90% of stakeholders believe the programme has impacted positively on their schools relationships with community tennis venues, 88% believe the programme has allowed schools to create clearer pathways to allow transition into community tennis venues. School of Tennis Evaluation Report, November 2016, Sport Industry Research Centre The Tennis Foundation plan to roll this out to more secondary schools over the next few years. To register your schools interest, please schools@tennisfoundation.org.uk 31 32
