8 2015 USTA JUNIOR TOURNAMENT INFORMATION & CHANGES In 2015 the USTA Missouri Valley and the USTA has restructured the tournament setup, schedule and points tables to directly reflect national level points tables. For the USTA there will be six (6) Futures Qualifier tournaments and four (4) District Championship tournaments in The Futures Qualifier tournaments are district tournaments (level 5 Missouri Valley points) that will provide the winner of the event a wild card into a subsequent Missouri Valley Futures tournament. These Futures Qualifier tournaments will NOT be open to players from other districts and are not required to but may include doubles. The District Championship tournaments will only be open to players from the USTA. These tournaments have significantly increased points values (level 4 Missouri Valley points schedule) and will include doubles. The Committee decisions reflect a system in which a player must earn their way into each level of competition providing level based play and driving competition to the districts. The system was implemented in 2014 and although overall, the Committee is pleased with the results, there will be a few minor changes for Please see an overview of the changes below. Tournament Schedule & Format: The Missouri Valley has eliminated the Futures in May, and created a second Futures in the summer over July 31-August 2 The Missouri Valley Team event has been moved to Memorial Day weekend and the format has been changed Selection into the June Super has been changed. There will now be 6 qualifying spots instead of 8 Selection into the August Super has changed. The semifinalists of the two July Futures will now qualify instead of the quarterfinalists of the July Futures Our Intersectional team will now send three players instead of four The Junior Suspension Point System will now apply to all USTA sanctioned events and codes can be processed online Standings List & Points Tables: The points assigned to Round Robins used at district events has been changed Bonus Points will now only be offered at Missouri Valley Levels 3-5 The bonus points table has been altered. Players will now receive bonus points for wins over players in the top 60 tiered as follows: top 60 tiered as follows: Rank Bonus Points Top Points Points Points Points Points Points Single elimination singles draws will no longer be included in our Missouri Valley standings Changes to a player record must now be submitted to the Missouri Valley before 8AM the day a list is run District Opportunities/Changes Events with four or fewer entrants per age division(b18, G14 etc) will use a Round Robin format, and events with five or more entrants will create a draw All districts agreed to split their Futures Qualifiers and District Championships where possible All districts agreed on a standardized naming convention for the Qualifiers and Championships Each district will have a minimum of four entry level events. The events should be non-elimination format tournaments and will not count towards a ranking 12 13
9 *The point chart associated with each level of tournament can be found in the Junior Circuit Rules and Regulations. Sweet 16 *Level 1 points Supers *Level 2 points Futures *Level 3 points District Championships *Level 4 points All Other District Events Designated for Points *Level 5 points Entry Level Events Junior Tournament Structure Entry Level Events: This level of tournament is a local tournament that does not receive points towards a ranking. The events are typically non-elimination formats and are an opportunity for a new player to experience competition in a tournament format. District Events: These tournaments are for players who want to begin to earn points towards a ranking. Advanced players often play these events as part of the age up process. District Championships: These events are also held throughout each district but are worth Level 4 Missouri Valley points. Each district is given four of these designated events. These events are closed to members of the district. Futures: These events are an introduction to section play. Players will encounter competition from all around the Missouri Valley. A player should expect more travel for these events. There is a selection process for these events as the draws are limited to 32 entries. The first method of selection is via district endorsement. A player can earn their way into a Futures by earning his or her district endorsement spot(please check with your district about how they endorse players into the Futures). The remaining spots are selected using the Missouri Valley Standings List. Supers: A higher level of competition. The Supers are also limited to a draw size of 32. Players can earn their way into a Super from previous results in a Section event (Please reference our Rules and Regulations for the qualifying events for each Super). Six to eight of the spots in the Super are reserved for these players. The remaining spots are filled by a players position on the Missouri Valley Standing List. Sweet 16: This is the highest level of competition in the Missouri Valley. Each Sweet 16 has an entry limit of 16 players. The quarterfinalists of the preceding Super will earn a spot. The remaining spots will be filled by the player s position on the most current Standing List. 10 and UNDER ROGY PATHWAY FOR YOUTH PLAYERS 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using this format, the benefits are immediate and, within a short time, kids are rallying, playing, and excited to keep playing. Until December 31, 2015, kids 10 and Under, new to the USTA, can receive a FREE 1-year junior membership - a $20 value! Get more information and sign up at The USTA Missouri Valley implemented a new pathway system, the ROGY Player Pathway, effective January 1, The ROGY Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. It is the Missouri Valley s belief that this structure will give players more time to develop both physically and technically. A player who becomes competent in these regards will be able to work through the pathway in a reasonable time period. Many facilities in USTA are now using this program. Many opportunities are available for young players in to learn tennis in this innovative teaching structure

19 NTRP ANSWERS Ratings for new players are computed by several different algorithms depending on how new they are. 1. The very first dynamic rating of a singles player is calculated using the rating of his/her opponent and the closeness of the match. This rating can possibly be a strike if it is a significant win over a player in the upper part of the level. The rating system does not differentiate between singles and doubles rating so in rare instances a person whose rating is primarily derived from doubles my contribute to a rating for a new singles player. 2. The second dynamic rating is calculated using the rating of his/her opponent and the closeness of the match. It is also possible that this rating can be an immediate strike. 3. The third dynamic rating is calculated by a slightly different method. It averages the two existing dynamics together and compares them to the rating of the opponent. Then it looks at the closeness of the match to see if it agrees with the compared ratings. On the basis of that, the rating of the new player is calculated. It may be slightly higher or slightly lower than the average of the two previous dynamics. 4. The fourth dynamic is calculated like the third but all three previous dynamics are averaged together first. That average value is compared with the rating of the opponent and the closeness of the score. On the basis of that, another new rating for the player is calculated. But this time the rating from this match is averaged with the three previous ratings and that value becomes the fourth dynamic. 5. From this point on, the rating of the player is always their must recent dynamic. This value is compared to the rating of the opponent and the score and a rating for the match is calculated. As in the previous step, this rating for the match is averaged with the previous three dynamics and becomes the next dynamic. It is important that players understand: Ratings are calculated based on the closeness of a match with a well-known player Players who are new move to a status of being well-known after they have at least three dynamic ratings Singles and doubles ratings are combined It is possible to get a strike in your first match It is possible to get a strike in a match which is a loss Disqualification assures that a fair playing field is maintained for those players who have been in the system for a long time and for those who self rated at a correct level 2015 USTA League Section Championship Dates & Information Adult Section Championship I August 6-9, 2015 Oklahoma City, OK Oklahoma City Tennis Center, Earlywine Park & Westwood Tennis Center Adults 18& Over 3.0, 4.0, 5.0+; Adults 40& Over 3.5, 4.5+ Adult Section Championship II August 20-23, 2015 Oklahoma City, OK Oklahoma City Tennis Center, Earlywine Park & Westwood Tennis Center Adults 18&Over 2.5, 3.5, 4.5; Adults 40&Over 3.0, 4.0 Adult Section Championship III September 10-13, 2015 City, MO Olathe Parks & Rec, Plaza Tennis Center, Homestead Country Club Adult 55&Over Men & Women 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, & 9.0 Mixed Doubles Section Championship I September 17-20, 2015 St. Louis, Missouri Dwight Davis Tennis Center Adult 40& Over Mixed Doubles 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 Mixed Doubles Section Championship II September 24-27, 2015 Springfield, MO Cooper Tennis Complex Adult 18 & Over Mixed Doubles 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, 10.0 Tri- Level Section Invitational November 13-15th, 2015 Urbandale, IA Life-Time Athletic Club, Men & Women 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 For updated information go to:
