Calgary Catholic Junior High School Athletic Association BADMINTON Schools are to enter a complete team in each grade. Should this not be possible, a school may enter a portion of the above (i.e., a grade 7 team only, or some of each in each grade level). A student may move up a grade level, but not down. 2. Substitutes: A badminton roster includes 10 players (GS (1), BS (1), GD (2) BD (2), MD (2) for each grade team and a MALE (1) and FEMALE (1) alternate (i.e., grade 7 has one boy sub and one girl sub). Subs play in the tri-meet tournament at the coach s direction. It is recommended further that they play a minimum of two games and these can be in any combination of singles, doubles or mixed doubles. (The intent is to provide playing opportunities for subs). No substitution after games have commenced with the exception of injury. 3. Shuttles we will be using the Teamline TBS 200 (green band/yellow skirt) for the finals. Item Code: (slow) 4. Dates for City Championships are May 2, May 3, and May 4 Grade 7 Tuesday, May 2nd Grade 8 Wednesday, May 3rd Grade 9 Thursday, May 4th COACHING ETIQUETTE Coaching badminton players is something done ONLY during: 1. Scheduled badminton practice. 2. On the bench between matches at meets/tournaments. Coaches must not do any coaching during a match at a meet/tournament nor should parents. It is very inappropriate to coach/call out to players during a match at a meet/tournament. This not only includes parents and spectators but also coaches. Badminton is known as an etiquette sport meaning that it is the players responsibility to already know the rules and strategies they need to play their best and to play independently without outside distractions. Coaching players out loud during a match causes distractions to the opposing players. Coaches MUST let their teams know that it is inappropriate for players, parents and spectators to boo or cheer loudly for/against a team or give any instruction. We need to teach our players and fans they must be respectfully quiet during match play. (It is the responsibility of the host to remind all present of these very important rules) Players must be taught to announce the score before every serve. Players will spin racquet or shuttle to determine 1 st serve.
Spectators Please ensure that athletes, parents and spectators do not cross the back of courts during play. Players Etiquette Both players must report scores to the table and they need to make sure scores are entered correctly. Fair Play There is no place for stalling in any badminton game. Players are expected to respect appropriate calls by the other team. However, if there is a problem they must seek assistance immediately from the Meet Director whenever they are concerned about fair play. TRI-MEET AND CITY FINALS Rules and Regulations 1. Our round robin games will go to 21 points. We will still continue with a 10 minute timed games. The team winning a rally adds a point to their score. At 20 all, the team that scores the 21 st point wins. In playoff rounds at City Championships, games will go to 21 points with a 2-point lead, to a maximum of 25 points. At 24 all, the side scoring the 25th point wins that game. 2. Should a tie occur, the result of the game(s) between the schools tied shall determine the winner. 3. In the event of a three-way tie, the person/team cumulative points scored in all games will be used to break the tie. 4. Points for aggregate totals are awarded as follows: 1 st (10), 2 nd (8), 3 rd (6), 4 th (4), 5 th (3), 6 th (2). In the event of a tie between schools the winner will be decided by total games won by schools. 5. The participants from both teams must be present when the winner(s) report(s) the final score to the official and sign the score sheet. Participants should report immediately if they have no opponent. 6. Players score their own games. Court etiquette is to announce the score prior to the serve. Failure to announce the score prior to serving will result in a Re-serve, not a loss of serve. If the shuttle is played by the receiver, the game shall continue. 7. Players are expected to call their own faults, however, if a problem occurs, contact the Meet Director immediately. Do not wait until the game is complete. Please instruct your students on how this is done. 8. Proper dress will be school gym strip or uniform in school colors.
9. The teacher in charge of the courts or the Meet Official will act as referee. 10. NB Once play has commenced, at City Finals there are no time-outs, or substitutions except injury. In finals, once a sub is used, they are committed to that category. A separate roster form will be provided for finals. A player once moved to a different category must remain in that category (i.e., Substitute player enters Mixed Doubles must remain in Mixed Doubles). Failure to follow this rule will result in forfeiture of that category. Rationale: Teams entering the medal rounds that used substitutes would have a very unfair advantage over teams who did not. For further clarification please contact Dan Farrell or Karen Durbeniuk. Meet Director MUST be notified when the sub is playing. 11. Coaching is not permitted during games. (this includes coaches, parents, teachers and all spectators) 12. All other rules as per badminton rule book Coaches are encouraged to review with their team, the rules pertaining to serving. REMINDER: SEE ATTACHED 14. NB Fair Play - there is no place for stalling in a timed game. 15. If player is not on court by the 5 minute mark of the timed game at City Finals, the game will be defaulted. (Score will be recorded as 21-0)
BADMINTON SERVICE RULES Three Components to Serving Legally 1. The entire racquet head must be below the hand (see illustration on last page of Rule Book) Teach Players: - The elbow must be below the shoulder - The hand must be below the elbow - The racquet head must be below the hands 2. The bird must be contacted below the waist. The waist is defined as the waist band of the shorts. 3. The serve must be made with one motion (i.e., No Faking). A new rule associated with this is that the player must present the racquet first and then the shuttle prior to serving. Problem Area The backhand serve, although effective, is often performed illegally by young players. It is important that all coaches monitor this with their players during practices and games. It is very difficult emotionally for students to be corrected at City Finals, so please ensure that they consistently serve correctly in practice. LEGAL SERVICE
BADMINTON COURT WITH SERVICE LINES
RALLY POINTS SIMPLIFIED SCORING SYSTEM Scoring System Our games will go to 21 points. We will still continue with a 10 minute timed game. The side winning a rally adds a point to its score. At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game. At 24 all, the side scoring the 25 th point, wins that game. Singles At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left service court. If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from alternate service court. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. Doubles There is only one serve in doubles. Teams need to ensure that all four players rotate the serve. At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court. If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the alternate service court. If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving side. The player of the receiving side who served last stays in the same service court from where he served last. The reverse pattern applies to the receiver s partner. The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving. If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the mistake is discovered. Double Serve Position Reception In doubles, during the delivery of service (Law 9.2, 9.3), the partners may take up any positions within their respective courts, which do not unsight the opposing server or receiver.
