9 OF GOLD MEDALS, TITLES AND OTHER THINGS In 2012, Andy Murray and Serena Williams achieved rare doubles each player won the gold medal in singles at the Olympic Games and then won the US Open singles title. In doing so, Murray became the first man in tennis history to win an Olympic gold medal and a Championships/US Open singles titles in the same calendar year, while Serena joined Steffi Graf and her sister, Venus Williams, as the only women in tennis history to do so. Graf accomplished the feat in 1988 as part of her unparalleled Golden Slam, in which she won all four Grand Slam tournament titles (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open) plus the Olympic gold medal in women s singles at the Seoul Olympics in the same year; Venus, meantime, claimed her titles in the span of three weeks in Here are the players who have won both Olympic gold and a Championships/ US Open singles title (tennis was not officially contested at the Olympics from 1928 to 1984): GOLD MEDALISTS AND US OPEN SINGLES Women Olympic Gold Medal US Open Title(s) Serena Williams , 2002, 08, Venus Williams Justine Henin , 07 Lindsay Davenport Steffi Graf , 93, Helen Wills Moody , 27-29, 31 Men Olympic Gold Medal US Open Title(s) Andy Murray Rafael Nadal , 13 Andre Agassi , 99 Beals Wright In doubles, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in 2012 became just the fifth tandem to win both Olympic gold and the US Open doubles titles and the third (second for men) to win both in the same year. The others with Olympic golds and Championships/US Open doubles titles are Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, Ken Flach and Robert Seguso, Helen Wills Moody and Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, and Serena and Venus. Of those mentioned above, in addition to the Bryans, Woodforde and Woodbridge and Wills Moody and Hotchkiss Wightman won both titles in the same year. Here s a look at the small group of players who have won both Olympic gold and a Championships/US Open doubles title: GOLD MEDALISTS AND US OPEN DOUBLES Women Olympic Gold Medal(s) US Open Title(s) Williams - Williams 2000, 08, , 2009 Hotchkiss Wightman - Wills Moody , 28 Men Olympic Gold Medal(s) US Open Title(s) Bryan - Bryan , 08, 10, 12 Flach - Seguso Woodbridge - Woodforde Roger Federer earned a gold medal US Open double of a different sort in He teamed with Stanislas Wawrinka to win the men s doubles gold medal in Beijing, then went on to win his fifth successive men s singles title in Flushing Meadows. 177

10 ACTIVITIES HISTORY WINNING THE US OPEN AFTER TRAILING MATCH POINT 2011 Novak Djokovic Djokovic saved two match points on Roger Federer's serve in the fifth set to knock off the five-time champion, 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, in the semifinals. Trailing 5-3, 40-15, Djokovic saved the first match point with a blistering cross-court forehand return that landed squarely on the sideline, and on the second, Federer made an unforced error on a forehand Andy Roddick Roddick saved one match point against David Nalbandian in the semifinals, trailing two-setsto-love and 5-6 in the third-set tie-break before winning by a 6-7(4), 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-1, 6-3 margin. Roddick saved his match point with a service winner Pete Sampras Sampras saved one match point against Alex Corretja in the quarterfinals, trailing, 7-6, in the final-set tie-break before winning by a 7-6(5), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(7) margin. Sampras hit a volley winner to save his match point Boris Becker Becker saved two match points against Derrick Rostagno in the second round, trailing two sets to one and 6-4 in the fourth-set tie-break. On the first match point, Rostagno hit a volley long. On the second match point, Becker s attempt at a passing shot hit the top of the net and fell out of reach of Rostagno. The guardian angel helped me, but he came a bit late, said Becker, who won the match, 1-6, 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(7), Martina Navratilova Navratilova saved three match points in her 6-1, 6-7(3), 7-6(8) semifinal victory over Steffi Graf. Serving at 4-5 in the final set, Navratilova faced two match points. After Graf nailed a forehand return at deuce to reach her first match point, Navratilova benefited from a mis-hit forehand from Graf that landed long. After Navratilova netted a forehand volley, she saved a second match point when Graf hit a forehand return long. In the final-set tie-break, Graf held match point serving at 8-7, but missed a backhand passing shot Manuel Orantes Orantes saved five match points and came back from being two sets down and 0-5 in the fourth set to register a 4-6, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win over Guillermo Vilas in the men s semifinals. 14 IN THE FAMILY... At the 2001 US Open, the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, helped shape one of the greatest nights in women s tennis history. They became the first sisters to play for a singles championship and did so in the first Grand Slam tournament final scheduled for a prime-time national network telecast. The match, which Venus Williams won, 6-2, 6-4, was the most-watched program on television on that September 8 night. But while the Williamses may have staged the most famous sibling duel at the US Open, they are hardly alone. From the Atkinsons to the Maleevas and from the Halls to the Sanchezes, brothers and sisters have a long history of facing off at the US Open. And of teaming up. Serena and Venus also paired to win the women's doubles crown, and the storied American brother pairing of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have won a doubles title together and faced each other in the mixed doubles final. 27 BEST QUALIFIERS () Qualifiers are players whose rankings were not high enough to receive direct acceptance into the main draw of the US Open but who then gained entry through the qualifying tournament. Men s Singles In 2008, Luxembourg s Gilles Muller reached the quarterfinals to match Frenchman Nicolas Escude for the best finish by a man who qualified at the US Open. Muller won three matches in qualifying, then dismissed former US Open quarterfinalist Tommy Haas, No. 18 Nicolas Almagro and No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko before falling to eventual winner Roger Federer. For his part, Escude, in 1999, also won three matches in qualifying before defeating No. 8 seed Carlos Moya and No. 10 Marcelo Rios. He also lost to the eventual champion, Andre Agassi, in the quarters. Ladies Singles American Barbara Gerken reached the quarterfinals of the 1981 US Open, the best finish by a female qualifier. After winning three matches in the qualifying tournament to make her debut in a major, Gerken defeated Rosalyn Fairbank, Andrea Buchanan, No. 7 seed Wendy Turnbull and Jo Durie, all in straight sets, before losing to No. 11 seed Barbara Potter. Gerken would compete in the US Open the next six years but only advanced past the first round once, reaching the third round in (SINCE 1969) Number Round Year of Qualifiers Reached Player(s) Nation rd Rd Daniel Evans Great Britain Mikhail Kukushkin Kazakhstan rd Rd Gregor Zemlja Slovenia nd Rd Sergei Bubka Ukraine Marsel Ilhan Turkey Malek Jaziri Tunisia Jean-Rene Lisnard Monaco Vasek Pospisil Canada rd Rd Kei Nishikori Japan rd Rd Marco Chiudinelli Switzerland Jesse Witten Quarterfinals Gilles Muller Luxembourg nd Rd Paul Capdeville Chile Rik De Voest South Africa Andrei Pavel Romania Philipp Petzschner Germany Dudi Sela Israel th Rd Benjamin Becker Germany rd Rd Arnaud Clement France rd Rd Ricardo Mello Brazil Alexander Peya Austria Michal Tabara Czech Republic rd Rd Ivo Karlovic Croatia Dmitry Tursunov Russia nd Rd Gaston Etlis Argentina Ivo Heuberger Switzerland Jean-Rene Lisnard France Dick Norman Belgium Noam Okun Israel Robin Soderling Sweden John van Lottum Netherlands rd Rd Ramon Delgado Paraguay David Nalbandian Argentina 195

31 BEST FINISH BY WILD CARDS () Wild cards are players who did not enter and/or whose ranking would not otherwise allow them direct entry into the main draw (or into the qualifying event in the case of qualifying wild cards) and are included in the draw at the sole discretion of the respective tournament committee. Men s Singles Five-time US Open champion Jimmy Connors has the best showing of any men s wild-card recipient at the US Open, reaching the 1991 semifinals. Connors, whose ranking had sunk as low as No. 936 earlier in the year, did not gain direct entry into the main draw. Ranked No. 174 at the start of the US Open, Connors began his epic run with a five-set win over Patrick McEnroe after trailing two sets to none. After straight-sets wins over Michel Schapers and No. 10 seed Karel Novacek, Connors won a tie-break in the decisive fifth set against Aaron Krickstein in the fourth round. He defeated Paul Haarhuis in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 4 seed Jim Courier in the semifinals. In 2005, James Blake became the only other man to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open as a wild card. Blake was ranked No. 107 at the time of the 2005 US Open entry deadline, but jumped up to No. 49 by the start of the tournament after reaching the finals of two Emirates Airline US Open Series events (winning New Haven and losing to Andy Roddick in Washington, D.C.). He opened with a straight-sets win over No. 28 seed Greg Rusedski in the first round, then knocked off Igor Andreev in the second. Blake posted the biggest win of his career in the third round when he upset No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. He then knocked off No. 19 seed Tommy Robredo in four sets to set up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 7 seed Andre Agassi. That match would go down as one of the most exciting matches in the history of the US Open after Agassi rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit to win, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(6). (For more information on the Blake-Agassi match, go to On this Day in US Open History for Sept. 7, in the Historical Records section.) Ladies Singles In 2009, Kim Clijsters became the first-ever wild card to win the US Open singles title, defeating No. 3 Venus Williams in the fourth round, No. 2 Serena Williams in the semifinals and No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Clijsters was the 2005 US Open women's singles champion but retired in 2007 to start a family. She came out of retirement in July 2009 and had played only two tournaments prior to the US Open. As such, she did not have a ranking and needed a wild card to gain entry into the main draw. Previously, the best finish by a women's wild card was shared by Frenchwoman Severine Bremond and two former champions, Serena Williams and Martina Hingis, all of whom reached the fourth round of the US Open. 34 BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LUCKY LOSER () ACTIVITIES HISTORY A lucky loser is defined as a player who loses in the qualifying tournament but gains entry into the main draw of the tournament despite the qualifying round loss. This occurs when a main draw player withdraws from the tournament after the qualifying tournament begins. Even though they are losers in the qualifying tournament, they are lucky enough to gain entry into the tournament due to the withdrawal of a main draw player. Men s Singles Italy s Laurence Tieleman (1999), Spain s Fernando Verdasco (2003) and Tieleman s countryman, Flavio Cipolla (2008), all reached the third round of the US Open as a lucky loser the farthest a lucky loser has advanced in the main draw of men s singles. Tieleman lost in the final round of qualifying in a third-set tie-break to Julien Boutter, then posted main draw wins over Taylor Dent and Galo Blanco before losing a fifth-set tie-break to Vince Spadea, 6-2, 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-6(3). Verdasco lost to Jeff Salzenstein in the final round of qualifying, 6-1, 6-4, but made the most of his opportunity once he got into the main draw. He upset No. 17 seed Tommy Robredo in the first round in straight sets and then ousted Davide Sanguinetti in four sets before losing to No. 11 seed Paradorn Srichaphan, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Cipolla lost in the final round of qualifying to Rui Machado, 7-6, 6-3, and then came within one set of becoming the first male lucky loser to advance to the fourth round. After a five-set victory in the first round and a four-set victory in the second round, Cipolla ran out of steam against No. 10 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, winning the first two sets before falling, 5-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, 6-4. Women s Singles In 1993, Maria Jose Gaidano of Argentina reached the fourth round as a lucky loser, the farthest a lucky loser has advanced at the US Open. Gaidano, who entered the main draw when Mary Joe Fernandez withdrew due to a stomach ailment, defeated Andrea Vieria of Brazil, Emanuela Zardo of Switzerland and Jenny Byrne of Australia before losing to Natasha Zvereva. 46 TIE-BREAK MATCHES ACTIVITIES HISTORY The tie-break made its US Open and Grand Slam debut in 1970 as a nine-point tie-break, with the first player to 5 winning the tie-break and a winner-take-all point played at 4-4. The tie-break switched to its current form (known as the 12-point tie-break) in 1975, with the winner needing 7 points to secure the tie-break but having to win by at least two points. Since the introduction of the tie-break system in 1970, a maximum of 65 games is possible in a fiveset match (13 games per set including the tie-break) and a maximum of 39 games is possible in a three-setter. Three men s matches (two singles, one doubles) have approached the 65-game maximum and seven matches (two women s singles, three men s doubles, one women s doubles and one mixed doubles) have reached the 39-game, three-set maximum. (Note: Men s doubles switched to a bestof-three sets format in 1993, giving men s doubles a 39-game maximum from that point forward.) Men s Singles (63 games) Novak Djokovic d. Radek Stepanek, 67(4) 76(5) (2), second round, 2007, in a match lasting 4 hours 44 minutes. John Lloyd d. Paul McNamee, , second round, 1979, in a match lasting 3 hours 56 minutes; the two also played 35 tie-break points. Women s Singles (39 games) Gigi Fernandez d. 57 SEEDING Seeding began at the Championships in 1922 as 16 American and seven international entrants were placed in the draw as seeds in the men s tournament. Eight women were seeded in the 1922 women s singles draw. Men s seeding at the Championships comprised both American and international seeds, no more than eight in each category, until 1956, when separate seeding was eliminated. From 1956 until the start of the Open Era in 1968, only eight men were seeded in the 128-player draw. In 1968, 16 men were seeded in the singles draw, a number that expanded to 32 seeds in The exceptions during this time were in 1970, when 20 players were seeded in a field of 108, and in 1971, when only eight players were seeded in a field of 128. Women s seeding at the Championships also consisted of American and international seeds until From 1956 until 1963, the women s singles draw consisted of eight seeds, while the 1964 event featured 12 seeded women. From 1968 until 1975, eight women were seeded in a singles draw of 64 participants. In 1976, the women s singles draw expanded to 96 players and the number of seeds increased to 16 for the first time. The US Open seeded 16 women from 1976 to 2000 with the lone exception of 1977, when there were only 12 seeds. The women s draw increased uniformly to 128 players in In 2001, the number of seeds expanded to 32. Jimmy Connors Martina Navratilova 225
