Nadal, Federer, Djokovic or Murray has been No. 1 in the ATP Rankings for 762 consecutive weeks (2 February 2004 through 9 September 2018). Though the Big Four own 49 of the last 54 Grand Slam titles, Juan Martin del Potro, Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka have also won the US Open. Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka return to New York after missing the 2017 US Open due to injuries. ALL HE DOES IS WIN: No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal has lost three matches in the same number he lost in 2013 entering the US Open. Nadal is 40-3 this season and was 53-3 at the start of the 2013 US Open, where he won his 13th Grand Slam title. The Spaniard has won six Grand Slam titles as the top seed, including the US Open in 2010 and NEVER IN OPEN ERA: Roger Federer did it at the Australian Open in 2007 and Wimbledon in Rafael Nadal did it at Roland Garros in 2008, 2010 and But no man in the Open Era has ever won the US Open title without dropping a set. Neale Fraser is the last player overall to do so, sweeping 21 sets for the 1960 US National Championships title. GRAPPLE IN THE APPLE: Legendary boxing promoter Don King billed it the Grapple in the Apple in 2008, but Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have still never played at the US Open. On six occasions, they were only one match away. WHAT A WAIT: Juan Martin del Potro is playing his 22nd Grand Slam and Marin Cilic is playing his 15th since winning US Open titles respectively. Either could set an Open Era record for most attempts before winning a second Grand Slam. SASCHA SEEKS SEMI: Alexander Zverev has won three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles and nine titles overall, yet he s still seeking his first Grand Slam semi-final. Zverev earned three wins from two-sets-to-one down to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at 2018 Roland Garros. However, he has suffered four losses at Grand Slams from two-sets-toone up, including third-round matches against Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open and Ernests Gulbis at Wimbledon. GREEK FREAK: It took Stefanos Tsitsipas nine tries to earn his first ATP World Tour win last October. Less than a year later, the #NextGenATP Greek became the youngest player to defeat four Top 10 opponents at a single event since the ATP World Tour was established in Tsitsipas defeated Dominic Thiem, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson before No. 1 Rafael Nadal spoiled his 20th birthday in the ATP Masters 1000 Toronto final on 12 August. MASTERING THE OPEN: Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic won ATP Masters 1000 titles in Toronto and Cincinnati respectively. The Canada champion has won the US Open title twice in the last 10 years (Nadal in 2013, Djokovic in 2011). The Cincinnati champion has won the US Open title once in the last 10 years (Nadal in 2013). Nadal also attempts to become the first player to repeat as US Open champion since Roger Federer won five straight titles from MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN: American men are suffering the longest Grand Slam title drought in their nation s history. The 2018 US Open marks the 15th anniversary of Andy Roddick s sole Grand Slam championship. Roddick and Andre Agassi are the only American men s singles finalists of the last 59 Grand Slam tournaments. They lost to Roger Federer in all five of their Grand Slam finals following the 2003 US Open. Roddick was runner-up to Federer at the 2006 US Open and at Wimbledon in 2004, 2005 and Federer defeated a 35-year-old Agassi in four sets for the 2005 US Open title. NO NEED FOR SEED: There has not been an unseeded US Open semi-finalist since Mikhail Youzhny in 2006, finalist since Mark Philippoussis in 1998 and champion since Andre Agassi in Gilles Muller (2008) and Nicolas Escude (1999) reached the quarter-finals for the best finish by a US Open qualifier in the Open Era. Jimmy Connors advanced to the 1991 semi-finals for the best finish by a US Open wild card. Leonardo Mayer (2017), Flavio Cipolla (2008), Fernando Verdasco (2003) and Laurence Tieleman (1999) are tied for the best finish by a lucky loser, each reaching the third round.
