With a win in Rome over No. 15 seed Tomas Berdych on Tuesday, Shapovalov would pass Milos Raonic in the ATP Rankings on 21 May and become the No. 1 Canadian. Shapovalov, now ranked a career-high No. 29, is trying to join five fellow #NextGenATP players as the No. 1 player from his respective country: No. 3 Alexander Zverev (Germany), No. 32 Andrey Rublev (Russia), No. 43 Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), No. 154 Casper Ruud (Norway) and No. 180 Hubert Hurkacz (Poland). Tsitsipas, 19, faces former #NextGenATP star Borna Coric in the first round on Tuesday. He is already the highest-ranked Greek player in ATP World Tour history. Djokovic has a 42-7 win-loss record in Rome, claiming titles in 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2015, as well as runner-up finishes the last two years. Dolgopolov will have to turn around a daunting head-to-head deficit if he hopes to claim an upset win, as Djokovic has won all five of their previous meetings on the ATP World Tour. This is only Dolgopolov s second match since the Australian Open, as he has struggled with a persistent wrist injury this year. Japan s Kei Nishikori has had a solid season since returning from his own wrist injury woes, and will meet Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the opening round on Monday. Nishikori kicked off the claycourt season with a bang, reaching the fourth ATP Masters 1000 final of his career in Monte-Carlo, before falling to 11-time champion Rafael Nadal. Nishikori has dropped his two matches since then, though, retiring against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Barcelona, and falling to Djokovic in Madrid. Meanwhile, Lopez will try to grasp a victory in Rome, which has been rare for him of late. Lopez made the quarter-finals in 2010 but has achieved only one match win at Rome in the last six years. The night match on Centrale sees Italian No. 1 Fabio Fognini taking on Frenchman Gael Monfils in an intriguing opening-round encounter. Monfils made the semi-finals in his debut appearance in 2006, but has won only one main draw match in Rome since then, and has played the event only once in the last five years. As for Fognini, he is still trying to make the first Rome quarter-final of his career; he shocked defending champion and then-world No. 1 Andy Murray last year to reach the third round, but dropped his next match to Alexander Zverev, who would go on to win the title. Two Top 10 seeds are in action on Next Gen Arena on Monday, as No. 9 seed David Goffin of Belgium faces Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, and No. 10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain battles American Jared Donaldson. Additionally, Great Britain s Kyle Edmund, who has made his Top 20 debut this week at a new career-high ranking of World No. 19, meets Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri. Both Edmund and Jaziri experienced their first-ever ATP World Tour singles finals at clay-court tournaments earlier this year Edmund at Marrakech, and Jaziri at Istanbul.
