This is the first all- French final in tournament history (since 1974) and the second this season on the ATP World Tour. In February, Tsonga defeated Pouille in Marseille. The last Vienna final with two countrymen was in 2010 when Jurgen Melzer defeated Andreas Haider-Maurer in an all-austrian title match. This is the third meeting between the Frenchmen and Tsonga won both matches in the 3R of 2016 ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo and in the final of 2017 Marseille. Both players have accounted for all six French titles on the ATP World Tour this season with Tsonga winning four titles and Pouille two. France is 6-6 in finals in Tsonga is appearing in his fifth ATP World Tour final of the season (4-0) and he s trying to become the first Frenchman to win at least five singles titles during the year since Guy Forget won six in The 32-year-old Frenchman is appearing in his third Vienna final, having won the 2011 title (d. del Potro) and reaching the final last year (l. to Murray). Tsonga leads the tournament with 48 aces and comes in with an ATP World Tour-best 20-2 indoor record this season. Three of his titles have come indoor (Rotterdam, Marseille, Antwerp). If Tsonga wins, he would pick up 200 points and improve to 2,510 in the Emirates ATP Race to London standings, leaving him 95 points behind Pablo Carreno Busta, who holds the final spot going into Sunday. Juan Martin del Potro is in the Basel final and he would move to the final spot with a title. If Tsonga wins, it would also be the 13th time this season a player has won an ATP World Tour title saving match point(s). He saved one MP in his 2R win over Damir Dzumhur. Tsonga is 6-1 vs. Frenchmen this season with his only loss to Mannarino in the 2R at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo in April. Pouille is making his career-best fourth ATP World Tour final (2-1) showing of the season and he s trying to become the first player this season to win ATP titles on three different surfaces. He won on clay in Budapest (d. Bedene) in April and on grass in Stuttgart (d. Lopez) in June. This is his sixth career ATP World Tour final (3-2). The 23-year-old Frenchman leads the tournament in service games won (41 of 45, 91%) and is No. 2 in aces (37) and break points saved (16 of 20, 80%). Thiem and Novak, both 24, were born in Wiener Neustadt just six days apart. Though they reached the 2016 Kitzbuehel doubles final together, their careers have taken different paths. Thiem seeks the 169th singles win of his career against Andrey Rublev, while Novak goes for his third against Thomas Fabbiano. Novak defeated Fabbiano to qualify on Sunday, but the Italian still made it into the main draw when No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov withdrew. Ofner is playing in just his third tour-level event after spectacular showings at Wimbledon and Kitzbuehel. The 21-year-old qualified and reached the third round at the All England Club, then edged No. 1 seed Pablo Cuevas en route to the Kitzbuehel semi-finals. His opponent on Tuesday is Lucas Pouille, who is 1-5 since winning his third-round match at the US Open on September 1. The Emirates ATP Race to London heats up Tuesday with No. 4 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, No. 6 seed Sam Querrey and No. 7 seed Kevin Anderson all in action. Two of Carreno Busta s countrymen could help his quest to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain clashes with Querrey, while Spanish veteran Guillermo Garcia-Lopez takes on Anderson. Another Spaniard, 2015 Vienna champion David Ferrer, begins play at 1 pm against Kyle Edmund. 32 ERSTE BANK OPEN 500: PREVIEW & DAY 1 MEDIA NOTES Monday, October 23, 2017 Wiener Stadthalle Vienna, Austria October 23-29, 2017 Draw: S-32, D-16 Prize Money: 2,035,415 Surface: Indoor Hard ATP World Tour Info Tournament Info ATP PR & Marketing ATPWorldTour.com ErsteBank-Open.com Martin Dagahs: Press Room: THINGS TO WATCH IN VIENNA 1) 500 Finales: The last of 13 ATP World Tour 500 events take place this week in Vienna and Basel, where pivotal points are the prize in the Emirates ATP Races to London and Milan. The Nitto ATP Finals qualification cut-off is November 6 and the Next Gen ATP Finals cut-off is October 30. 2) Two Races Won: Erste Bank Open 500 No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev has qualified for both the Nitto ATP Finals and Next Gen ATP Finals. The 20-year-old German counts ATP Masters 1000s at Rome and Montreal among his five titles in Zverev is the youngest player to win an ATP Masters 1000, break into the Top 5 and earn five titles in a season since Novak Djokovic in ) Thiem s Travails: No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem is up to a career-high No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. But the Austrian is just 5-6 on home soil at the Erste Bank Open 500. His struggles in Vienna may have less to do with location and more to do with timing. Thiem is throughout his career during the months of October and November, never reaching a semi-final after September. 4) London Calling: While Thiem and Zverev have already booked their tickets to London, No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov is next in line for Nitto ATP Finals qualification. Dimitrov accepted a wild card and will make his Vienna debut this week. He started the season 16-1 and is 14-4 since August 14. 5) Down to the Wire: No. 4 seed Pablo Carreno Busta would be the last Nitto ATP Finals qualifier if the season ended today. But the Spaniard is in the midst of a four-match losing streak. Carreno Busta leads No. 6 seed Sam Querrey by 80 points and No. 7 seed Kevin Anderson by 135 points. 6) American Pride: Querrey is attempting to qualify for his first Nitto ATP Finals and finish a season as the No. 1 American for the first time. The 6-foot-6 Californian is 620 race points ahead of No. 5 seed John Isner, who has ended each of the last five seasons as the top player from the USA. 7) Comeback Kev: Since the start of 2016, Anderson has endured injuries to his ankle, elbow, groin, hip, knee and shoulder. He fell to No. 80 on January 16, 2017 and was No. 32 when he became the lowest-ranked US Open finalist in history. Anderson returned to the Top 15 on September 11. 8) Hit or Miss: No. 8 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has won more than 30 matches in 10 straight seasons. But 2017 has been an up-and-down year for the Frenchman. On one hand, he has captured a career-high four titles. On the other, he has lost his opening match at five tournaments. 9) Milan Bound: All three men who have already qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals are competing in Vienna this week: Zverev, Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov. Wild card Sebastian Ofner, a 21-year-old Austrian, must win the Erste Bank Open 500 championship for a chance at qualifying. 10) Double the Pressure: Unseeded teams Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez, and Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas are battling with three teams competing in Basel for the last-remaining Nitto ATP Finals spot in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race to London.
