Nadal will hit the court for only his second event this season when he takes on fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The No. 1 seed s only prior match play this year was his run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, where he retired due to a hip injury while trailing in the fifth set to eventual finalist Marin Cilic. Nadal, the champion here in 2005 and 2013, has a long history with Lopez, not only as compatriots and erstwhile doubles partners. The two have battled on Tour 13 times over the last 15 years. Nadal has won nine of the 13 matches; Lopez has emerged victorious in the most recent two, but they have not played each other since Matches featuring Top 10 stars will precede and succeed Nadal and Lopez on Cancha Central. The first ATP World Tour match on the main court will pit No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina against Germany s Mischa Zverev. Del Potro is enjoying a rankings renaissance, having returned to the Top 10 last month for the first time in well over three years. Then, following the Nadal/Lopez tilt, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, the younger Zverev brother, will kick off his Acapulco campaign with a meeting against American Steve Johnson. The 20-year-old World No. 5 from Germany picked up two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles during a breakthrough 2017, but it is Johnson who won their only prior meeting, at Miami in Two former champions will play their opening rounds on Grand Stand Caliente. First, title holder Sam Querrey of the United States will start his championship defense against Australian Matthew Ebden. The 7th-seeded American comes into the event with a brand-new career-high singles ranking of No. 11, and has won both of his previous matches with Ebden. Later on the same court, No. 3 seed and 2016 champion Dominic Thiem of Austria opens his event by facing British qualifier Cameron Norrie. Thiem fell to Querrey in the quarter-finals last year, having beaten the American en route to the title the year before. 4th-seeded American Jack Sock is yet another Top 10 player who will be on court, as he plays his first-round match on Cancha 2 against qualifier Ernesto Escobedo. The compatriots have yet to play each other on the ATP World Tour. On that same court, play opens for the day when Japan s Kei Nishikori, on the comeback trail this season after a lengthy injury break, faces off against #NextGenATP player Denis Shapovalov of Canada, the youngest player in the draw at age 18. Then, in a surprising twist of the draw, Argentina s Diego Schwartzman and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco will square off in the first round just two days after Schwartzman defeated Verdasco in the final of the ATP World Tour 500 event in Rio de Janeiro. Among the remaining matches, Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung of South Korea will make his Acapulco main draw debut against American Donald Young on Cancha 4. Also on that court, Frenchman Adrian Mannarino will take on Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis, and qualifier Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan will meet Australian wild card Thanasi Kokkinakis. Finally, the last match on Cancha 2 will see Mexican wild card Lucas Gomez, in the main draw for the third straight year, play German Peter Gojowczyk, fresh off a run to the Delray Beach final last week.
