Thiem is an excellent 26-6 on clay this season, with titles at Buenos Aires and Lyon and a runner-up showing at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid to go alongside his first Grand Slam final in Paris. As for Moutet, the 19-year-old qualifier is currently in 15th place on the Race to Milan to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals. This will be Moutet s second match against a Top 10 player: he lost to David Goffin in the second round of Roland Garros this year. Another 2018 Roland Garros achiever, No. 6 seed Marco Cecchinato, will play his first match on Tuesday after adding to his clay-court exploits last week, when he picked up a second clay-court title at Umag. After winning his maiden ATP World Tour singles title at Budapest on clay as a lucky loser, Cecchinato upset Pablo Carreno Busta, Goffin, and former champion Novak Djokovic en route to the semi-finals at Roland Garros, becoming the first Italian Grand Slam semi-finalist in 40 years. Cecchinato will be immediately tested in Hamburg by former Top 10 player Gael Monfils. Two Germans also take to the center court on Tuesday. Roland Garros runner-up Dominic Thiem headlines the German Tennis Championships ) Dominant Thiem: If Rafael Nadal is the king of clay, the 24-year-old Thiem is heir to the throne. Nadal is 50-2 on clay since April 2017 with losses to Thiem at 2017 Rome and 2018 Madrid. For his career, Thiem is with eight titles on clay (.752) and with two titles elsewhere (.538). 3) Big Strides: No. 2 seed Diego Schwartzman has achieved a new career-high ranking 17 times since 2017 began, peaking at No. 11 on 11 June The Roland Garros quarter-finalist is the highest-ranked player to stand 5-foot-7 or shorter since 5-foot-6 Harold Solomon was No. 10 on 27 July Schwartzman did not drop a set en route to the Rio de Janeiro title in February. 4) On the Surface: Like Schwartzman, No. 3 seed Pablo Carreno Busta is playing his 10th claycourt tournament of But the Spaniard is adept on other surfaces as well. His first two titles, maiden Grand Slam semi-final and only two ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals all came on hard courts. 5) Turning Point: No. 4 seed Damir Dzumhur ended 2017 on a 24-7 run, highlighted by his first two ATP World Tour titles at St. Petersburg and Moscow. But the 26-year-old Bosnian was this season entering Antalya on 24 June. Dzumhur went on to win the third championship of his career. 6) No Place Like Home: Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany has earned 30+ wins and enjoyed Top 50 finishes in each of the last 11 seasons. The key to Kohlschreiber s success has come at home. The two-time Hamburg semi-finalist is in Germany (.654) and elsewhere (.538). 7) Sicilian Sensation: Marco Cecchinato broke through at Roland Garros to become Italy s first Grand Slam semi-finalist in 40 years. The Budapest champion trailed Marius Copil by two sets in the first round before upsetting Carreno Busta, David Goffin and 2016 champion Novak Djokovic. 8) Back to the Breakthrough: Richard Gasquet bids for the biggest title of his career this week. The Frenchman reached his first of three ATP Masters 1000 finals as an 18-year-old at 2005 Hamburg. Gasquet returns for the first time since Hamburg became an ATP World Tour 500 event in ) Tale of Two Mayers: Two rarities occurred at once when a pair of players ranked outside of the Top 100 and with the same last name reached the 2017 Hamburg final. Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, a 138th-ranked lucky loser, beat 101st-ranked Florian Mayer of Germany for his second Hamburg title. Both Mayers are back, with Florian set to make his final tournament appearance. 10) Dream Team: The greatest Austrian players of the 21st century will join forces for just the second time at the German Tennis Championships Thiem and former World No. 8 Jurgen Melzer received a wild card in doubles.
