The three-time defending champion from Uruguay has won 13 straight matches in Sao Paulo. He captured his first Sao Paulo title in 2015 (d. Vanni) and followed that up with successful title defenses in 2016 (d. Carreno Busta) and 2017 (d. Ramos-Vinolas). Overall, Cuevas is 16-5 lifetime at this tournament. Cuevas arrived in Sao Paulo fresh off his best showing of 2018, also in Brazil, reaching the QF last week in Rio de Janeiro (l. to Jarry). In fact, the last four ATP World Tour titles that Cuevas has won have come on Brazilian soil (2016 Rio de Janeiro, d. Pella). Ofner set up the R16 encounter with Cuevas by defeating Marco Cecchinato in straight sets on Tuesday. The Austrian won their only previous meeting last year in a third-set tie-break in the 2R at Kitzbuehel en route to his first career ATP World Tour SF (l. to Sousa). No. 5 seed Leonardo Mayer kicks off the action on Centre Court Wednesday afternoon when he meets fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq for a spot in the QF. This will be the first ATP World Tour meeting between the two compatriots since 2013 Nice, with Berlocq winning their R32 match in straight sets. Mayer saved two match points against Gastao Elias on Monday and needed three hours to get past his Portuguese opponent in a third-set tie-break. He is a two-time quarter-finalist in Sao Paulo (2012, l. to Bellucci; 2015, l. to Souza) and is seeking his second ATP World Tour QF of the year (Buenos Aires, d. Fognini, l. to Monfils). Berlocq also rallied from a set down to defeat Brazilian teenager Thiago Seyboth Wild on Monday. A victory would move Berlocq into his fourth career QF at Sao Paulo (2010, l. to Ferrero); 2012 (l. to Almagro); and 2013 (l. to eventual champion Nadal). The last player other than Cuevas to win the Sao Paulo title, 2014 champion Federico Delbonis (d. Lorenzi), is next up on Centre Court as the Argentine takes on Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain for a berth in the QF. This will be the second meeting this month between the two, with Delbonis winning their QF encounter in Buenos Aires, 6-3, 7-5, two weeks ago. Delbonis defeated Quito champion Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on Monday, while Garcia-Lopez won his first match in San Paulo since 2005 by defeating Gerard Melzer in three sets. In the third afternoon singles match on Centre Court, No. 2 seed Fabio Fognini takes on Portuguese qualifier Joao Domingues for the first time on the ATP World Tour. Fognini advanced to his second ATP World Tour SF of the year last week in Rio de Janeiro (l. to Verdasco), matching his showing in Sydney earlier this year (l. to eventual champion Medvedev). The Italian No. 1 reached the Sao Paulo SF in 2008 (l. to eventual champion Almagro) and is a three-time quarter-finalist here (2010, l. to Kubot; 2015, l. to Giraldo; 2017, l. to Carreno Busta). Domingues notched his first ATP World Tour match win of the year on Monday, rallying past qualifier Renzo Olivo in three sets. Ranked No. 194 in the world, Domingues has struggled in the early part of 2018, failing to get out of the qualifying rounds at the Australian Open (l. to Polansky in Q1); Buenos Aires (l. to Ruud in Q1); and Rio de Janeiro (l. to Cecchinato in Q1) before breaking through this week.
