The player responsible for the biggest upset of the tournament was #NextGenATP teen and lucky loser Andrey Rublev of Russia, who scored a three-set victory over defending champion Fabio Fognini to reach his first Emirates ATP World Tour semi-final. His challenges will only continue on Saturday, as Rublev faces wild card Ivan Dodig, who will certainly carry a home-court advantage on Stadium Goran Ivanisevic. Playing in his native country has certainly been an advantage for the 32-year-old Dodig. After an eightmatch tour-level losing streak this year, the Croat has turned his luck around for a three-match win streak in Umag, where he dismissed top seed David Goffin en route to reaching the semi-finals for the first time. The second semi-final will feature an all-italian battle as Alessandro Giannessi takes on No. 4 seed Paolo Lorenzi. The two are separated by 70 ranking spots on the Emirates ATP Tour, with Giannessi at No. 104 and Lorenzi at No. 34. In his debut in Umag, Giannessi has gone the distance in all three of his matches this week, needing three sets to secure his victories and advance to this stage. Lorenzi, on the other hand, earned a bye in the first round and has played only five sets thus far. Both men are seeking their first final in Umag. In doubles action, the championship match will feature the Croatian wild card team of Tomislav and Marin Draganja, who took out the No. 2 seed team of Dodig and Franko Skugor, against the Argentine No. 3 seeds Guillermo Duran and Andres Molteni, who defeated the top seed team of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor. Both are seeking their first tour-level title this year, and both teams are playing in their first Emirates ATP Tour final together.
