If the pressure of competing in his first ATP match on home soil is not enough, Quiroz is facing an opponent he is very familiar with, former USC teammate and roommate Yannick Hanfmann of Germany. Quiroz and Hanfmann were teammates on the Trojans' NCAA Championship teams in 2012 and 2014, and together they captured the ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship in New York in 2014 before graduating in Hanfmann seeks his first win of 2018 after a breakthrough 2017 that saw him reach his first ATP World Tour SF and final at Gstaad as a qualifier. Three seeded players will vie for a berth in the Round of 16. No. 5 Horacio Zeballos of Argentina faces Thiago Monteiro of Brazil on Center Court Tuesday afternoon. In the evening session, No. 8 Nicolas Jarry of Chile takes on Argentine qualifier Facundo Bagnis, followed by No. 7 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, the oldest player in the draw, meeting American Ernesto Escobedo. Last year, the 38-year-old Karlovic squandered three match points and lost to eventual champion Victor Estrella Burgos in a third-set tiebreak in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter. In other first-round action, two Quito quarter-finalists from last year will square off when Roberto Carballes Baena faces fellow qualifier Federico Gaio of Italy. Carballes Baena fell to countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets last year, while Gaio lost to Estrella Burgos in the QF. The other opening-round matchup will feature Gerard Melzer of Austria taking on Marco Cecchinato of Italy. Melzer will seek his third R16 berth in Quito in four years, while Cecchinato vies for his first match win in Quito after failing to get out of qualifying last year.
