ZVEREV BATTLE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP The Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open championship on Saturday features reigning champ and wild card top seed Stan Wawrinka against German qualifier Mischa Zverev, who is attempting to capture his first career ATP World Tour title. This is the third meeting between the two (tied 1-1) and Zverev won the last contest in the Basel quarter-finals last October. Wawrinka s win came in the 3R at 2008 Wimbledon. Coming into Geneva both players combined for three wins on clay this season. Wawrinka was 2-3 and Zverev was 1-6. Now they have combined for seven main draw wins this week. Both have served well under pressure to get to the final with Wawrinka saving 11 of 13 break points (85%) and Zverev 21 of 27 break points (78%). Zverev is looking to duplicate the performance of younger brother Alexander, who won his maiden ATP World Tour title in St. Petersburg on Sept. 25, 2016, defeating Wawrinka Wawrinka is appearing in his second final of the season (ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells, l. to Federer) and 27 th overall in his career (15-11). He is 6-5 in clay court finals. His last title came at the US Open last September (d. Djokovic). He has held serve 28 of 30 games this week (93%). Although he only has a 49% first serve pct. mark in his three matches, Wawrinka is winning 80% of first serve pts. and 61% of second serve pts. Zverev is putting together his best week of the season and he is appearing in his second career ATP World Tour final as qualifier. His previous final was in Metz on Sept. 26, 2010 (l. to Simon). The 29-year-old German is looking to defeat the fourth seed he s faced this week. He beat No. 4 John Isner in the 2R, No. 5 Steve Johnson in the QFs and No. 2 Kei Nishikori in the SFs. Zverev is attempting to become the first qualifier to win an ATP World Tour title since Nicolas Mahut in 2015 s-hertogenbosch (d. Goffin). He is the third qualifier to reach a final in the past month. Aljaz Bedene was runner-up in Budapest (l. to Pouille) and Guido Pella was a finalist in Munich (l. to A. Zverev). There have been three first-time champions this year (see below). Of the remaining players, Johnson and Querrey have won ATP World Tour titles this year. In the opening singles match on Court Central, Johnson and German qualifier Mischa Zverev meet for the first time. Johnson, who captured his second career ATP World Tour title in Houston last month, comes in on a six-match winning streak. He has not dropped a set en route to his first quarter-final in Geneva. Zverev defeated No. 4 seed John Isner on Wednesday to reach his first quarter-final since the Australian Open in January. The 29-year-old German is attempting to reach his first semi-final since Basel last October. In the second match on, Kevin Anderson of South Africa and wild card Nishikori square off for the fifth time. Nishikori has won three of the previous four hard court meetings, including the 2015 Memphis final. Anderson is trying to reach his second ATP World Tour semi-final of the season after getting to the semis in Estoril earlier this month. Anderson is trying to break a five-match losing streak vs. Top 10 opponents and also collect his first career Top 10 win on clay (0-10). Nishikori is making his sixth appearance in a quarter-final this season and when he s advanced past this round, he s reached the final twice, in Brisbane and Buenos Aires. The Japanese star s last ATP World Tour title came in February 2016 in Memphis (d. Fritz). He has been a finalist six times since then. In the evening session, Wawrinka brings a 4-1 head-to-head advantage against Querrey. This will be their first meeting on clay. Wawrinka won the last meeting on grass in the 3R at 2014 London/Queen s Club. Wawrinka is looking for his first ATP World Tour title of the season while Querrey is trying to earn his second title of the year. In March, he defeated Nadal to win the Acapulco title. Querrey is also the last American to capture an European clay title in 2010 Belgrade. In the final match on, Russian Andrey Kuznetsov and German lucky loser Cedrik-Marcel Stebe meet for the first time in an ATP World Tour main draw. In their previous meeting at 2010 Zagreb qualifying, Kuznetsov won Kuznetsov is coming off an impressive win over No. 3 seed and No. 20-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Wednesday to reach the Geneva quarter-finals for the second year in a row.
