The victor will claim his second ATP World Tour singles title of Additionally, a win for Pouille is projected to put him into the Top 10 of the ATP World Tour singles rankings for the first time in his career. Pouille has now reached his second final in as many weeks, and, indeed, he was only a couple of games away from coming into Dubai with two titles on the season already in hand. However, Pouille fell to Karen Khachanov in the Marseille final last week, with the Russian prevailing 7-5 in the final set. The arduous final did not end well for the Frenchman, but he still came to Dubai undeterred. This week, after eliminating former Top 10 player Ernests Gulbis in the first round, Pouille exacted revenge on Khachanov in the second round with a three-set win over the Russian. A come-from-behind win over No. 8 seed Yuichi Sugita in the quarter-finals was followed by a two-hour and 19-minute semi-final win over Filip Krajinovic. Pouille defeated Krajinovic for the second time in two weeks, this time in a final-set tiebreak. The Frenchman served 16 of his tournamentleading 44 aces to nudge him over the line in the semi-final, which was the second-longest match of the event. Pouille is now into his third final of the year, looking for his sixth career title, and his second of 2018 after triumphing at Montpellier. Moreover, if Pouille does win the title, he is projected to make his Top 10 debut, one week after turning 24 years old. Bautista Agut is also attempting to clinch a second ATP World Tour singles title of the year, after winning at Auckland in January. Between Auckland and Dubai, however, Bautista Agut hit a rough patch, and went winless in three matches. After 20 straight Grand Slam events where he won at least one match, the Spaniard fell in the first round of the Australian Open to compatriot Fernando Verdasco in straight sets. Bautista Agut then dropped a Davis Cup match against Great Britain s Cameron Norrie despite leading two sets to none, and then fell in his opening match at Marseille to Julien Benneteau. But the World No. 23 is back in fine form this week, surviving the longest match of the tournament against Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round (2 hours and 21 minutes), and using that momentum to claim straight-set wins over Borna Coric in the quarter-finals and Malek Jaziri in the semi-finals. Bautista Agut is now going for the eighth ATP World Tour singles title of his career, hoping to bookend that minor losing streak with a pair of trophies. Defending champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau have returned to the Dubai final, aiming for their 17th doubles title as a pairing. They will square off against the wild card team of Jamie Cerretani and Leander Paes, who are making their ATP World Tour debut as a team. Although Rojer and Tecau have achieved tremendous results as partners over the last five years, Cerretani and Paes have also already served notice that they can succeed together, backing up their ATP Challenger Tour title at Newport Beach, CA, USA from last month with their first Tour-level final in only their second event as a duo. 44-year-old Paes has also proven that he can win this event, having claimed the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title 20 years ago, in 1998 (with Mahesh Bhupathi), and 15 years ago, in 2003 (with David Rikl). They are joined by a wild card who is a veteran of the event, playing the main draw for the sixth straight year and posting a career-best result at Dubai in Singles play kicks off on Friday with the first semi-final, between No. 2 seed Lucas Pouille of France and No. 7 seed Filip Krajinovic from Serbia. The two will face off for the second time in as many weeks, following Pouille s tough three-set victory over the Serb in the Marseille quarter-finals last Friday. Pouille has made it into the Dubai semi-finals for the second straight year after some challenging victories: he exacted revenge over Karen Khachanov in the second round after the Russian had beaten him just days before in the Marseille final, and then was pushed to three sets for the second straight match in his comeback quarter-final win over 8thseeded Yuichi Sugita. Krajinovic was initially tested in his opening round, dropping his first set of the event 0-6 to Thomas Fabbiano, but then reeled off six sets in a row to reach the final four in his tournament debut. The second singles semi-final will feature 3rd-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut taking on wild card Malek Jaziri of Tunisia. The 34-year-old Tunisian has been the sensation of the event since he stunned No. 1 seed Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round to claim the first Top 10 win of his career. Having backed up that victory with triumphs over Robin Haase and Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jaziri finds himself in the Dubai semi-finals for the first time, in his sixth straight appearance in the main draw. Bautista Agut, however, appears to have rounded back into form after suffering a three-match losing streak between his title in Auckland and this week. The Spaniard survived the longest match of the event so far, a two-hour and 21-minute victory over Pierre- Hugues Herbert, but he won that match 6-1 in the third, and has not dropped a set in his other two wins here. The Dubai event will see new names added to its roll of honor, as none of the eight remaining competitors have previously made it to the championship match. The first match on Centre Court will see No. 3 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain take on Croatia s Borna Coric. Bautista Agut, now a two-time quarter-finalist in Dubai, is into the final eight of a tournament for the first time since his title run in Auckland in the second week of the season. The Spaniard has won three of his four meetings with Coric, but the Croatian has had success in Dubai since his first appearance at the event, when he ousted Andy Murray as a lucky loser in Coric picked up another upset this year, eliminating No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet in the first round. Second up on Centre Court is a matchup between two wild cards at differing ends of the experience spectrum, 34-year-old Malek Jaziri of Tunisia and 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece. Jaziri claimed the first Top 10 win of his career in the first round, when he shocked World No. 4 and top seed Grigor Dimitrov en route to his second Dubai quarter-final. Meanwhile, Tsitsipas, the youngest player in the draw, outlasted No. 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber yesterday to advance to the first ATP World Tour 500 quarter-final of his career. Following that match, No. 2 seed Lucas Pouille from France will square off against 8th-seeded Yuichi Sugita of Japan. Pouille defeated Karen Khachanov in the previous round, exacting revenge for the Russian s win over Pouille in the Marseille final last week. While Pouille is hoping to make Dubai his second title of the season, after winning at Montpellier, Sugita would like to claim the second title of his career, to go with his championship trophy from Antalya last year. Rounding out singles play on Thursday will be the match between No. 7 seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia and Russia s Evgeny Donskoy. Both the Serb and the Russian had surprising runs at ATP World Tour events last season which made headlines. Krajinovic raced to the first and heretofore only singles final of his career at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Paris, as a qualifier ranked No. 77 in the world. Donskoy s moment of notoriety during 2017 came right here in Dubai, when he earned the biggest win of his career in the second round over Roger Federer, coming back from deficits in the second set, the third set, and the decisive tiebreak. The top two seeds remaining, Lucas Pouille of France and Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, are each looking to maneuver their way through a difficult field, in hopes of claiming a second ATP World Tour singles title of No. 2 seed Pouille has a stern test in the second round, as he will face the man who defeated him in the Marseille final three days prior: Russian Karen Khachanov, who outlasted Pouille in three grueling sets to claim the second singles title of his career. Pouille had a 7-0 win-loss record in France this month before running into Khachanov in the Marseille championship match, and the 21-year-old Russian, like Pouille, will view the Dubai draw as an opportunity to clinch a second title of the season. 3rd-seeded Bautista Agut, the Auckland champion in January, will have to defeat France s Pierre-Hugues Herbert if he hopes to reach his first quarter-final since his triumph in New Zealand. Bautista Agut has a 2-0 win-loss record against Herbert at Tour level. The Frenchman just barely made it into the second round, having to stave off multiple match points in a final-set tiebreak against Joao Sousa in his opening round. Two matches featuring wild cards round out the day on Centre Court, after the Bautista Agut-Herbert and Pouille-Khachanov matches. First, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus will square off against No. 7-seeded Serbian Filip Krajinovic. The Cypriot, who reached the final here in 2016, put his wild card to use with a first-round win over another Serbian, Viktor Troicki. Another wild card, Tunisia s Malek Jaziri, will play Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the final match on Centre Court. Jaziri is one day removed from his stunning opening-round upset of top seed Grigor Dimitrov, which was the Tunisian s first win over a Top 10 opponent in 11 tries. In a battle between two of last year s quarter-finalists, 4th-seeded Bosnian Damir Dzumhur faces Russia s Evgeny Donskoy on Court 1. Of course, Donskoy s path to the final eight last year contained the biggest win of his career: a massive comeback victory over Roger Federer in the second round. Another of last year s quarterfinalists, No. 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, follows them on Court 1 when he plays Greek wild card Stefanos Tsitsipas, the youngest player in the draw at age 19. Kohlschreiber has had solid success in Dubai recently, reaching the quarter-finals in the last two years, as well as the semi-finals in Earlier in the day on Court 1, No. 8 seed Yuichi Sugita of Japan takes on Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, and France s Benoit Paire plays Croatian Borna Coric. Coric upset No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet in the opening round.
