Berdych, the 2013 runner-up, will be first up during the night session as he faces Italian qualifier Stefano Travaglia. The Czech, who also reached the semifinals during his most recent Marseille appearance in 2016, will attempt to make his third quarter-final of the year. Travaglia moved into the second round of an ATP World Tour event for the third time this year via a firstround victory over 17-year-old wild card Hugo Gaston, who was the youngest player in the field. Later in the evening, Wawrinka will also meet a qualifier, Ilya Ivashka of Belarus. The three-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland is still searching for his first final since reaching the Roland Garros championship match last year, before undergoing two knee surgeries which kept him out for most of the second half of Ivashka, meanwhile, is putting together a bit of a breakthrough season on the ATP World Tour. The Belarusian claimed his second career win in the main draw of an ATP World Tour event in the first round over Laslo Djere, having just recently notched the first one of his career at Pune in January. Earlier matches on Thursday feature Frenchmen with storied histories in Marseille meeting up with seeded players. Two-time champion Gilles Simon will try to upset No. 8 seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in their second-round encounter. The 34-year-old from France eked past Maximilian Marterer in two tiebreak sets in the first round, extending his career win/loss record here to 24-9, and keeping alive his hopes to win a second title of the year in as many months, after triumphing at Pune in January. Simon s compatriot Nicolas Mahut will then battle 6th-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Mahut is making his 12th appearance at Marseille, having twice reached the quarter-finals in his career. The day kicks off with a tilt between No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia and Mischa Zverev from Germany. Zverev reached the semi-finals here in 2010, while Khachanov clinched his first main-draw victory in Marseille with a win over qualifier Ruben Bemelmans on Tuesday. This will be the first meeting between the Russian and the German at Tour level, but they did play in the first round of the qualifying event here two years ago, with Zverev emerging victorious in three sets. No. 5 seed Roberto Bautista Agut took his spot in the draw. 3) Wawrinka s Recovery: After undergoing two left knee surgeries in August, Wawrinka returned last month at the Australian Open with a first-round win over Ricardas Berankis.
