7 ALL-AMERICANS A HISTORY OPPONENTS LISA BAUGHN AIAW FIRST TEAM 5-10 MB Mountlake Terrace, Wash. Washington volleyball s first All-American, Lisa Baughn helped lead the Huskies to the Regional 9 title and 10th place national finish in She was a four-year starter and led the Northwest Volleyball League with a.395 hitting percentage as a sophomore. Baughn was also an All-NWL selection in 1980 and MELINDA BECKENHAUER AVCA FIRST TEAM AVCA SECOND TEAM 5-8 S Los Altos, Calif. Melinda Beckenhauer is UW s only two-time All-American after earning second team honors in 1988 and first team honors in A two-time Pac-10 All-Conferece pick, Beckenhauer still holds the school record for career assists with 3,707 (over three years). She also ranks among UW s top 10 in aces and digs. PAIGE BENJAMIN AVCA FIRST TEAM 5-10 OH Redmond, Wash. Paige Benjamin was a first team All-American and second team Academic All-American in An All-Region and All-Conference selection, Benjamin set the Washington single-season records for kills (573), kills per game (5.31) and attacks (1,371). Benjamin ranks among the top 10 UW charts in kills, attacks, hitting percentage and total blocks. REVIEW PLAYERS COACHES/STAFF ANGELA BRANSOM AVCA FIRST TEAM 6-4 OH Eugene, Ore. MAKARE DESILETS AVCA FIRST TEAM 6-2 OH Vancouver, B.C. CANDACE LEE AVCA HONORABLE MENTION 5-7 L Eugene, Ore. PREVIEW Angela Bransom became just the fourth All-American in Husky history after earning first team honors in Branson is the only three-time All-Pac-10 honoree in Washington history and was named to the All-Freshman Team in She holds school records for career kills and attacks and ranks among UW s top 10 in seven categories. Makare Desilets earned first team All-America honors after leading the nation in blocks (2.04 bpg) in Her 2.04 bpg average also set a Pac-10 record. A twotime All-Pac-10 pick, Desilets graduated ranking second all-time on the Pac-10 career charts in blocks, block assists and block average. She holds six UW singleseason and career block records and was a two-year member of the U.S. National Team (1998, 99). Candace Lee earned All-America honors after leading the Pac-10 and setting a school record with 5.95 dpg, which ranked 13th nationally. She set a single-season UW record with 666 digs to extend her school record to 1,508 career digs. Lee is just the fourth Husky to tally 1,000 career digs. Christal Morrison became UW s first freshman to earn All-America honors after leading the Huskies to the 2004 Final Four. Morrison, the Pacific Region and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, ranked second in the conference with 4.10 kills per game and 4.67 points per game. LAURIE WETZEL AVCA FIRST TEAM 5-11 OH Puyallup, Wash. Laurie Wetzel earned first team All-America honors after leading the Pac-10 in kills per game in A twotime All-Conference selection, Wetzel set season and career records in kills and attacks. Her 41 kills in a match continues to be a Washington record and she ranks among the UW s top 10 in seven categories. SANJA TOMASEVIC AVCA SECOND TEAM 6-1 OH Uzice, Serbia-Montenegro Sanja Tomasevic was named a second team All-American after leading the Huskies to the Elite Eight in She finished the season with 571 kills to rank second on the UW all-time season chart and tallied double figure kills in all 32 matches. COURTNEY THOMPSON AVCA FIRST TEAM 5-8 S Kent, Wash. Courtney Thompson became the seventh UW player to earn first team All-America honors as she ranked third in the country with assists per game to set a Husky record in She dished 1,643 assists on the season to set a school record and is just the second player in UW history to amass 3,000 career assists. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS PAIGE BENJAMIN Paige Benjamin became Washington s first Academic All-American when she earned second team honors in She led the Huskies with a 3.84 grade-point average in Accounting and was a three-time member of the Academic All-District and Pac-10 All-Academic teams. CANDACE LEE Candace Lee was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women s Volleyball third team. She boasted a 3.78 gradepoint average in English with a minor in Italian and was an Academic All-District VIII University Division first team pick and Pac-10 All-Academic first team selection. COURTNEY THOMPSON Courtney Thompson was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women s Volleyball third team.
