MURPHY 20TH BRUIN TO RECORD 1,000 CAREER KILLS Senior Brynn Murphy became the 20th player in UCLA women s volleyball history to reach the 1,000 career kill plateau on Sept. 24, when she recorded the milestone kill in the second game of UCLA s four-game loss to Washington. Murphy currently has 1,160 career kills, ranking her 19th on UCLA s all-time list and 71st in Pac-10 history. Murphy was named to the All-Tournament Team at the McDonald s/texas A&M Invitational over Labor Day Weekend, turning in a team-high 35 kills and 10 blocks as UCLA posted sweeps over Southern Mississippi, Samford and No. 15 Texas A&M. One of two Bruins recording at least one block per-game this season, Murphy matched her career-high total of 23 kills in UCLA s fivegame loss to Hawai i. MCFARLAND MOST VALUABLE IN TEXAS; REACHES 3K ASSISTS On Oct. 15 at USC, senior setter Krystal McFarland became the sixth player in UCLA women s volleyball history to reach the 3,000 career assist milestone. McFarland recorded just 11 assists as a true freshman in 2000, playing primarily as a situational substitute as an outside hitter. During her sophomore year in 2002, McFarland set in a 6/2 system, recording an even 1,000 assists for the year. Taking over the full reins at the setting position last season, McFarland tallied 1,309 assists and is averaging a career best assists per game this season. She is currently the Pac-10 s active career assist leader with 3,363 career assists, ranking fifth in UCLA women s volleyball history. McFarland opened the 2004 season in style, piloting the Bruins to a 6-0 start, the team s best since the 1993 season. McFarland was also honored as the Most Valuable Player of the McDonald s/texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas, over the Labor Day weekend. McFarland set her team to a trio of three-game victories. In Texas, McFarland averaged assists per game while directing the Bruin offense to 16 kills per game and a.270 team attack percentage in victories over Cal State Northridge, Southern Mississippi, Samford and Texas A&M. McFarland is averaging assists per game for the 2004 season. 3 ZARTMAN DIGS RECORDS; EARNS POW HONOR Senior libero Chrissie Zartman made history twice in a 72-hour span in mid-october, recording her 1,703rd career dig during UCLA s five-game win at Oregon State on Oct. 22, then becoming the first libero in Pac-10 history to be named the Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 25. Zartman averaged 6.12 digs/game in UCLA s matches at Oregon and Oregon State en route to topping the Pac-10 career digs mark, previously held by USC s Katie Haller (1,702 digs from ). Zartman is currently averaging 5.59 digs/game, more than a full dig better than last year s average and well over her career average of 4.31/game, which would shatter Haller s Pac-10 career record and rank 10th in NCAA history. During the third and final game of UCLA s three-game victory over Texas A&M on Sept. 4, senior Zartman recorded the 1,406th dig of her Bruin career, passing Samantha Shaver (1,405 from ) for the UCLA career record. Zartman this weekend s play with 1,899 career digs. She ranks 18th in NCAA history for career digs entering the Washington State/Washington series. In UCLA s five-game loss to then-no. 11 Hawai i, Zartman became just the sixth player in UCLA women s volleyball history to record a then-career-high 30-dig match. She followed with a 29- dig performance in UCLA s five-game loss to Utah on Sept. 17, and on Nov. 5 at California, Zartman became the first Bruin ever to have two matches with 30+ digs, recording a new career high of 31 digs in UCLA s five-game defeat of the Golden Bears. Zartman stepped up once again in UCLA s five-game loss to USC on Nov. 12, recording a UCLA-record 36 digs to set a new career high against the Women of Troy. GREEN TOPS BRUIN ACE LEADERS, RANKS 1ST IN PAC-10 ACES A role player off the bench as a freshman, Becky Green started UCLA s first seven matches of the 2004 season but struggled with a back injury from mid-september into early November. She has recently returned to the lineup full time and is making an impact for the Bruins at the service line and in the kill column. Despite sitting out nearly two full weekends of play after injuring her back at Utah on Sept. 17, Green holds UCLA s highest ace per-game mark at 0.36, downing 25 aces over her 69 games played this season. Her per-game ace average is fourth-best in the Pac-10. In Pac-10 matches only, Green leads the conference with an average of 0.47 aces/game. Green has led the Bruins in kills on six occasions. She also posted a then-career-high 20.5 points at both Stanford and California in early November before setting a new career mark of 21.0 points against USC on Nov. 12. In UCLA s Oct. 30 loss to Arizona, Green became the first Bruin other than Chrissie Zartman and Colby Lyman to lead the team in digs, posting 15 in that contest. BARBA BREAKS CAREER HIGHS Junior middle blocker Nancy Barba set new career-high totals in kills and points in early November at Stanford and California. In UCLA s five-game loss at Stanford, Barba posted careerhighs of 14 kills and 15 points and followed that performance with a 15-kill, 19-point match the following night in UCLA s five-game win at California. Barba also posted a career-high seven blocks (1 BS/6 BA) against the Golden Bears. Against USC on Nov. 12, Barba contributed with 10 kills and five blocks (1 BS/4 BA) in the five-game contest. Barba has started nine matches this season, including all three of UCLA s matches in the month of November. She has played in 69 of a possible 97 games this season, averaging 1.79 kills and 0.46 blocks per game this season. 4 LYMAN BOASTS ALL-AROUND GAME As an integral part of UCLA s 2003 squad, Colby Lyman has continued her solid all-around play into the 2004 season. Lyman is averaging just under two kills per game as part of the Bruins balanced attack, although her performance was limited to back-row play for much of the Oregon/ Oregon State series last weekend. Lyman is also among the team s dig leaders, trailing only libero Chrissie Zartman with a 2.53 digs per-game average, and is third on the squad with a 0.60 blocks per-game average on the season. Lyman has been UCLA s dig leader three times this season, the only player other than Chrissie Zartman to do that more than once this year (Becky Green led the Bruins in digs on 10/30 vs. Arizona). Lyman has played in 89 of a possible 97 games over 21 matches so far this season, including 57 of 59 in Pac-10 play. Against Stanford and Cal in early November, Lyman played in a primarily defensive role after missing two games of the Oct. 30 Arizona match with a shoulder impingement. Lyman had a cortisone shot in her left shoulder following that match and practiced sparingly in the first week of November. RINGEL DEADLY FROM THE OUTSIDE After an All-Tournament performance at UCLA s NCAA Regional to finish out the 2003 season, senior outside hitter Brittany Ringel has continued as a strong performer for the Bruins this season. Ringel is third on the team in kills per game, checking in at 2.84, while contributing 41 blocks and 12 service aces this season. Ringel had a season-high 21 kills against BYU on Sept. 18, just one kill shy of her career high set against Arizona as a sophomore. The team s leader in kills on five occasions this season, Ringel has posted double-figure kills in 10 of her 22 matches played this season. On senior night in Pauley Pavilion (Nov. 20 vs. Oregon), Ringel led the Bruins with 12 kills, hitting.346 for the match. TAMMY JACKSON STEPS IN TO SET Prior to October 21, 2004, redshirt sophomore Tammy Jackson had played in just eight games over six matches during nearly two and a half years of practicing with the Bruins. Jackson redshirted her true freshman year in 2002, then played in four games over three matches as a redshirt freshman last season. During the early portions of UCLA s season, Jackson came off of the bench to play in four games over three matches, recording 17 assists and three digs. When senior setter Krystal McFarland went down with a sprained right ankle late in the third game of UCLA s win at Oregon on Oct. 22, Jackson entered the game and helped UCLA record its final four points of the match, recording three assists in the process. The next night, at Oregon State s Gill Coliseum, Jackson set the Bruins to their first fivegame win of the 2004 season, recording 64 assists and 14 digs in the process. Jackson now has 85 career assists and 18 digs. On Oct. 26 in UCLA s five-game loss to Pepperdine, Jackson set another career high with 21 digs and three block assists, paired with 59 aces, two kills and 3.5 points. She split time with McFarland during the Arizona State and Arizona matches last weekend at Pauley Pavilion as McFarland continued her recovery from a sprained ankle. Jackson has continued to contribute as a role player since McFarland returned to the starting role at setter. CULLEN CONTRIBUTES ON THE COURT Senior outside hitter Heather Cullen has overcome early-season limitations due to knee problems and is currently battling back problems that kept her out of the lineup between the Oct. 15 match at USC and UCLA s Senior Night against Oregon on Nov. 20. When she has been able to play, Cullen has been a vital part of UCLA s offensive attack. Cullen led the Bruins with 16 kills against Stanford on Oct. 9, the second time this season she led UCLA in kills. The senior outside hitter had off-season knee surgery related to the ACL repair she had as a senior in high school, keeping her from playing at full strength during the early weeks of the season. In 2004, Cullen is averaging 2.41 kills, 1.72 digs and 0.49 blocks per game over 39 games played this season. NEED AN ANTHEM SINGER? Redshirt freshman Rachell Johnson has become a regular singer of the National Anthem for the UCLA Athletic Department. Last season, she performed the Star Spangled Banner prior to the start of three women s volleyball home matches and sang the anthem for UCLA s women s basketball home opener on Nov. 23. Her largest vocal stage came on April 17, 2004, when she sang the National Anthem prior to the team final at the NCAA Division I Women s Gymnastics Championship at Pauley Pavilion, an event won in record-setting fashion by UCLA. BRUINS SIGN FOUR TO NLIS IN NOVEMBER UCLA head women s volleyball coach Andy Banachowski has signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Elise Carstensen, Kelsey Hall, Kaitlin Sather and Nellie Spicer will be freshmen for the 2005 Bruins. Elise Carstensen is a 6-4 middle blocker from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Ga. Carstensen is a three-time All-State selection and was named Georgia s State MVP last season. The Westminster School has won three consecutive Championships, with Carstensen putting down match point in last year s final. Elise has a great arm and is eager to learn the middle blocker position, said Banachowski. She will be able to help us right away. Kelsey Hall is a 6-1 outside hitter from Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, Calif. Hall is not playing volleyball during her senior season due to a torn ACL suffered during tournament play last summer. An All- CIF performer as a junior, Hall was the 2004 Open 16 Division MVP in 2003, leading her Mavericks club team to the tournament championship. Kelsey has an uncanny knack for the game, said Banachowski. Defensively, she is a solid passer and can put the ball away. Kaitlin Sather is a 6-1 outside hitter from Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, Calif. A versatile player who is ranked in the national top-20 by PrepVolleyball.com. Kaitlin has played every position and is as complete a player as any freshman we have had, said Banachowski. Kaitlin plays with an intensity and excitement that is infectious. She s a great competitor who will relish the challenges of the Pac-10. Nellie Spicer is a 5-9 setter from Barrington High School in Barrington, Ill. Spicer is ranked as the nation s top senior setter by PrepVolleyball.com, and as the No. 9 recruit in the nation. Spicer played for the USA Junior Team as a libero during the summer of 2004, and is expected to contend for UCLA s starting setter position in Nellie is a dynamic setter with a deceptive delivery, said Banachowski. Her teammates will love hitting her sets and playing with her. We needed to stay big in the middle and replenish our outside hitting corps, said Banachowski. Plus, we picked up the best setter in the country, so I am extremely pleased with this recruiting class. INJURY UPDATE Senior outside hitter Heather Cullen missed over a month of the season due to back problems and did not play between the Oct. 15 match at USC and the Nov. 20 match against Oregon at Pauley Pavilion.
