UCLA faces #4 USC on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then heads to Boulder for a Friday matchup with Colorado at 6 p.m. PT. Both contests will be televised, with the USC match on ESPNU and the Colorado tilt on Pac-12 Networks. WHAT S NEXT After a 12-match road trip to start the season, the Bruins are home next week for a pair of televised matches on the Pac-12 Networks. UCLA hosts #7 Stanford on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. before entertaining California on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. BRUINS IN THE POLLS The Bruins remained at 11th for the third straight week in the latest AVCA Coaches poll. UCLA earned two additional points to stay at 11th. The next Volleyball Magazine Top 20 poll, in which the Bruins were 11th last week, will be released on Tuesday. REEVES NAMED A FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Kelly Reeves has been named one of 30 women s volleyball fi nalists for the Senior CLASS Award, given to the top student-athlete who excels both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classifi ed as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total studentathlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the NCAA Division I Women s Volleyball Championship in December. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 fi nalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the offi cial ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifi es excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. LOWE NAMED PAC-12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior Karsta Lowe was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 after helping the Bruins to a perfect 3-0 record at the season-opening Doubletree Los Angeles Westside Invitational. Lowe recorded double fi gures in kills in all three matches, posting 52 kills in 10 sets (5.20 kps) and an outstanding.557 hitting percentage, more than 250 points above her career clip. Even more amazing with those lofty numbers is that Lowe accomplished it mostly playing only three rotations every trip around the fl oor. In the season opener against fi ve-time defending America East regular-season champion Albany, Lowe paced the Bruins with 11 kills in a three-set victory, making only one error in 22 attacks (.455) to go with six digs. After going 3-for-3 in the opening set and posting two kills in the second, Lowe had six digs and no errors in the third with fi ve digs. In Aug. 31 s early matinee sweep against North Texas, Lowe was the lone Bruin in double fi gures in kills, setting a career high with 18. She had only two errors in 22 swings for a personal-best.727 hitting percentage. The junior was a perfect 8-for-8 in kill attempts in the fi rst set with three digs and two blocks. She added six kills in the second and four more in the third. In the tournament championship match later that evening against Loyola Marymount, a team which advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, Lowe led the Bruins in kills for the third straight contest, setting another career high with 23. She hit.514 and added four blocks. Lowe paced UCLA in kills in all four sets, going for three in the fi rst, fi ve in the second, seven in the third and eight in the fourth. Lowe earned her second Pac-12 weekly honor, a day shy of the year anniversary of her fi rst award last Sept. 3 when she was named conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance at the UCSB Invitational. NEWS AND NOTES The Bruins have won 42 straight matches when hitting.300 or better, including four times this season... UCLA is fi fth among all Pac-12 teams in hitting (.288) and sixth in kills per set (14.11). Nationally, the Bruins are 15th and 30th, respectively, in those standings... the Bruins are 10 wins away from 1,200 for the program s history... UCLA has won all nine of its contests when leading a match in hitting percentage... senior Kelly Reeves is 68 digs away from becoming the 22nd Bruin to post 1,000 career digs. Reeves has three straight double-doubles to give her 14 for her career... freshman Jordan Robbins has started each of the last four matches and is averaging 6.76 assists per set during that span. She registered her fi rst double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs at Long Beach State last Wednesday... redshirt freshman Haley Lawless has at least four kills and four digs in each of her last three contests, producing highs of seven kills against Cal State Northridge (Sept. 13) and nine digs at Long Beach... junior Monica Stauber earned her fi rst career double-double at Long Beach State with a career-high 28 assists and 11 digs. She has at least 23 assists in three straight contests... sophomore Karly Drolson set a career high with 20 digs at Long Beach. Three of her fi ve double-fi gure digs contests have come this season, including 18 against Cal State Northridge and 17 versus Santa Clara (Sept. 5)... one match after posting her fi rst career double-fi gure kills match, sophomore Maddy Klineman recorded her fi rst contest with double fi gures in digs, producing 10 at Long Beach. Against Creighton on Sept. 24, she had 19 kills... freshman Claire Felix has seven kills in back-to-back matches and has surpassed the fi ve-kill mark fi ve times this season... senior Mariana Aquino, who is fi fth among Pac-12 players in hitting percentage at.434, has six matches this season with at least fi ve kills and one or zero hitting errors. SCOUTING THE USC TROJANS USC (10-1) brings a four-match winning streak into Wednesday s contest with its crosstown rival, having defeated UC Santa Barbara, Eastern Washington, UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton since dropping its only match of the season, a four-set loss at current #8 San Diego on Sept. 13. The Trojans opened the year with a pair of victories over teams that started the season in the Top 25, Purdue and Western Kentucky. USC is averaging kills, 1.53 aces, digs and 2.82 blocks per set, hitting.286 as a team. Four players are averaging at least 2.00 kps, led by freshman Elise Ruddins, who had 3.41 kps and a.361 hitting percentage. Sophomore Samantha Bricio is second with 3.14 kps, fi rst with 26 aces and third with 2.32 dps, freshman Ebony Nwanebu is third with 2.82 kps and 0.85 bps and senior Sara Shaw is fourth with 2.17 kps and second with 2.49 dps. Like the Bruins, the Trojans employ a 6-2 offense, with junior Hayley Crone posting 5.97 assists per set and freshman Alice Pizzasegola averaging 5.21 aps. Senior Natalie Hagglund handles the libero duties and is averaging 4.55 dps. Senior Alexis Olgard (1.17) and junior Hannah Schraer (1.13) are each posting at least a block per set. Mick Haley is in his 13th year at USC and has a record of to go with a 1, mark in 36-plus seasons of coaching. THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. TROJANS UCLA leads the all-time series with USC 58-53, with each team winning on its home fl oor a year ago. The Bruins closed out the regular season with a four-set victory over the Trojans (Nov. 23) at Pauley Pavilion. Zoë Nightingale had a career-high 14 blocks, while Kelly Reeves added 18 digs. USC defeated UCLA in four in the Pac-12 season opener on Sept. 19 at the Galen Center. Karsta Lowe had 13 kills and seven digs. The Bruins are all-time at USC and most recently won at the Galen Center on Sept. 9, 2011, sweeping the Trojans. UCLA has alternated losses and wins over its last fi ve trips to the Galen Center, dropping the most recent contest. SCOUTING THE COLORADO BUFFALOES Colorado (8-1) travels to Utah on Tuesday to open up Pac-12 play before hosting UCLA on Friday. Since dropping their season opener at home against Saint Mary s, the Buffaloes have won eight straight, including a three-set sweep at Baylor on Sept. 14. Colorado is averaging kills, 1.41 aces, digs and 2.30 blocks per set, hitting.281 as a team. Junior Taylor Simpson leads the team with 3.33 kps, followed closely by sophomore Alexis Austin s 3.20 kps. Sophomore Nicole Edelman handles the setting duties and is posting assists per set. Freshman Cierra Simpson is tops on the team in dps (3.40) and senior Nikki Lindow is fi rst in bps (1.38). Liz Kritza is in her fi fth season at Colorado and has a record of and a mark in eightplus years of head coaching. THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. BUFFALOES The Bruins have never lost to the Buffaloes in seven previous meetings, including four victories since Colorado became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Last year, both UCLA wins were sweeps (Oct. 19 at UCLA, Nov. 9 at Colorado). The Bruins only two appearances in Boulder have both been sweeps in 2011 and. Colorado has won just two of 21 sets all-time against UCLA. #11 BRUINS COME BACK TO BOUNCE LONG BEACH IN FIVE Senior Kelly Reeves had 13 of her career-high 21 kills in the last two sets, adding 15 digs to lead a group of three Bruins who had double-doubles, as #11 UCLA came back from 2-1 down to beat Long Beach State in fi ve on Wednesday at the Walter Pyramid. Reeves, who added three aces, posted her third straight doubledouble. Junior Karsta Lowe had 20 kills and tied a career high with six blocks. Senior Mariana Aquino recorded 10 kills and seven blocks, freshman Claire Felix had seven kills, redshirt freshman Haley Lawless posted a personal-best nine digs and four kills and junior Zoë Nightingale tallied six blocks and four kills. Junior Monica Stauber and freshman Jordan Robbins each had double-doubles, as Stauber went for 28 assists and a career-high 11 digs and Robbins posted 28 assists and a personal-best 13 digs. Defensively, sophomores Karly Drolson (20) and Maddy Klineman (10) each had career highs in digs. The Bruins hit.196 as a team. The fi rst set featured 13 ties and fi ve lead changes. Trailing 10-8, the Bruins scored six of the next eight to go ahead Aquino had two kills and teamed up with Reeves on a block during the run, Lowe added a kill and the 49ers recorded service and attack errors, forcing Long Beach State into a timeout. It was a great breather for the host team, which scored the next fi ve out of the break to take a edge. Long Beach s largest lead of the set was four at UCLA scored four of the next fi ve on two Nightingale kills and kills from Felix and Reeves to get to within one at 20-19, but a er run put their advantage back up to four at A 3-0 Bruin run on kills by Robbins and Lowe and an Aquino solo block made it 23-22, but a sideout gave the 49ers two set points. The fi rst was saved on an Aquino kill and an Aquino/Klineman combo block equaled the score at 24. The 49ers scored next to earn a third set point, but a Felix kill and a Klineman ace gave the Bruins their fi rst set point. However, Long Beach State recorded the next three points to close out a victory. Lowe led the Bruins with fi ve kills in the fi rst, while Aquino, Felix and Nightingale added three apiece. Klineman tallied seven digs, while Robbins had six. The Bruins were out-hit.205 to.188. UCLA (9-1) had an early 3-1 lead in set two on a Reeves kill and ace and a 49er attack error, but Long Beach State came back with an 8-2 run to go ahead 9-5. The 49ers largest advantage was fi ve at 18-13, but UCLA scored fi ve of the next six to get to within one at Lowe, Felix, Aquino and Reeves had kills, while Aquino added a solo block. Long Beach State would get its lead back up to three at 23-20, but UCLA came back to save six set points to win the second and even the match heading into intermission. A LBSU (5-5) attack error and a Robbins kill made it 23-22, but the 49ers sided out to earn two set points. However, a Lowe kill and an Aquino/Lowe combo block tied things up at 24. The teams traded the next eight points, with a Lowe kill, a 49er service error, a Reeves kill and a LBSU attack error saving the next four set points. A combo block by Lowe and Nightingale gave the Bruins their fi rst set point and Lowe fi nished the second with her teambest seventh kill to wrap up a thrilling victory. Lowe had no errors in eight attempts, while Reeves added four kills. Lowe and Nightingale each had three blocks. UCLA out-hit Long Beach State.242 to.200. The Bruins were in front at the start of set three 3-1 on a Nightingale/Reeves combo block, a Reeves ace and a Klineman kill, but a 5-2 Long Beach run put the home team up by one at 6-5. A Felix kill and 49er attack error put the Bruins ahead again by one at 7-6, but Long Beach State countered with a 6-1 run to take a 12-8 edge. The 49ers would build their lead to as many as fi ve at before the Bruins closed the gap. Trailing 18-14, a 4-1 UCLA run on two Reeves kills, an Aquino kill and a solo block by freshman Jennie Frager trimmed the defi cit to one at However, the 49ers scored six of the last seven points of the set to take the third Seven different Bruins had kills in the set, led by Reeves three. Sealy has a threeyear record of for a.765 winning percentage and guided the Bruins to a National Championship in Last season, the Bruins posted a 23-8 record, fi nishing in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark and advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Two Bruins, Rachael Kidder and Tabi Love, were named All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-12, while Zoë Nightingale earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades. For the 14th-straight season, the Bruins surpassed the 20- win mark in. UCLA was second in the nation in kills per set (14.76), third in assists per set (13.84) and fi fth in hitting percentage (.295), which was also the second-best, singleseason total in program history. The Bruins led all Pac-12 teams in hitting and were second in kps and aps. In 2011, Sealy led the Bruins to the program s fourth NCAA title and seventh National Championship. The Bruins posted a 30-6 record and defeated four-time defending champion Penn State, #1-overall seed Texas, Florida State and Illinois en route to the championship. Sealy was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year. The Bruins fi nished second in the Pac-12 with a 17-5 record. Six players were honored on the All-Conference teams, while Kidder, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, was a First Team All-America and All-Region selection. UCLA fi nished fi fth in the nation in assists per set (13.71) and eighth in kills per set (14.52). Among Pac- 12 teams, the Bruins ranked fi rst in aps, second in kps and opponent hitting percentage (.160) and third in digs per set (15.95). In his fi rst campaign, Sealy guided the Bruins to a 22-9 record, a fourth-place fi nish in the Pacifi c-10 Conference (11-7) and a Second-Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Three Bruins were named to the All-Pac-10 team in 2010, Dicey McGraw (First Team), Lainey Gera (Honorable Mention) and Kidder (Honorable Mention), while McGraw also earned AVCA All-Pacifi c Region Honorable Mention accolades. UCLA fi nished in the top half of the Pac-10 in digs (2nd, 15.41), assists (4th, 13.46), kills (4th, 14.26) and aces (5th, 1.20) per set along with opponent hitting percentage (4th,.187). Sealy spent part of the summer of in London at the Olympic Games, serving as a scout coach for the U.S. men s volleyball team. UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced on Feb. 10, 2010 that Sealy was named head coach of the Bruin women s volleyball program. Sealy returned to his alma mater after spending four seasons ( ) as an associate head coach at the University of Hawai i. He was a three-time All-American and an assistant coach for four years with the UCLA men s volleyball team and was an assistant with the Bruin women s volleyball program in We are excited to welcome back Michael Sealy to lead the women s volleyball program, Guerrero said. Michael clearly possesses the necessary credentials to allow UCLA to compete at the highest level. He is well-respected in the volleyball community and has an enthusiastic and passionate approach towards the game. Furthermore, as a former Bruin player and coach, he understands the tradition of excellence that has defi ned the volleyball programs at UCLA and I am confi dent that he will continue that legacy of success with ambition and integrity. Sealy helped Hawai i to a berth in the National Semifi nals in The Rainbow Wahine recorded their second-straight, 30-win season last year, going 32-3 overall. They also posted a 16-0 mark in conference play to earn their 14th-straight Western Athletic Conference title and went on to claim their 10th-consecutive WAC Tournament championship. Sealy s record during his tenure at Hawai i was (.862 winning percentage). Prior to his stint at Hawai i, Sealy coached for four seasons at UCLA, where he was an assistant on the men s side from and an assistant for the women s volleyball team in In his lone season on the women s side, the Bruins posted a record and advanced to the Regional Semifi nals. With the UCLA men, Sealy was (.705) during his four campaigns, helping the Bruins to an NCAA Championship in 2006 and an NCAA Runner-Up fi nish in Sealy was also a volunteer assistant with the Cal State Northridge men s volleyball team in 2000 before working in the same capacity with the UCLA men in One of the top setters in UCLA history, Sealy was a four-year letterwinner with the Bruins from and ranks fourth in Bruin annals in assists (4,749). In his senior season, Sealy and the Bruins won the program s 14th National Championship, going The team captain was named the co-most Outstanding Player of the 1993 NCAA Tournament and also earned ASICS/Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year and AVCA All-American fi r st-team honors. In addition, Sealy was named an All-American in 1991 (fi rst-team) and 1992 (third-team), as well as All-Conference three times. The Bruins won three conference titles during Sealy s playing days, going (.769) during his four years. Following his playing career in Westwood, Sealy went on to play professionally in Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Puerto Rico. He also played with the U.S. National Team in 1994 and Sealy graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a degree in physiological science.
