On Friday, Sept. 23, the Bruins entertain Washington State in their home opener at Pauley Pavilion at 7 p.m. Free audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com. BRUINS IN THE POLLS UCLA fell four spots from seventh to 11th in this week s AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Bruins lost 248 points. Seven UCLA opponents are in the Top 25 (#5 Washington, #10 San Diego, #12 Stanford, #15 Hawai i, #18 Colorado, #21 USC and #24 Oregon). In addition, four other schools (#27 Missouri State, #32 Washington State, #35 Long Beach State and #36 Loyola Marymount) are receiving votes. CLIMBING THE CHARTS Senior Taylor Formico continues to move up the UCLA all-time digs list. Entering the campaign with 1,026, she has added 119 over the fi rst three weekends to give her 1,145 as a Bruin. Formico is 11th all-time and just nine away from reaching the Top 10 and surpassing current assistant coach Kaitlin (Sather) Nielsen (1,153). She could also this week pass Kelly Reeves, who is ninth with 1,186 digs. Along with moving up the UCLA charts, Formico is also just 63 digs away from 2,000 for her career (792 at UCSB in 2012). NEWS AND NOTES UCLA started its season at 7-0, its best start since 2006 when it began with 20 consecutive victories. The previous two times the Bruins opened a year with at least six straight wins, they have reached the third weekend of the NCAA Tournament ( National Semifi nals; National Champions)... in all of its seven victories, UCLA has held its opponent to a.151 hitting percentage or less... senior Jordan Anderson has double fi gures in kills in six in a row. She equaled a season high in kills at #15 San Diego on Sept. 10 with 17, also posting that total against Pacifi c on Sept the team leader in kills per set is junior Reily Buechler, who has six double-fi gure kills matches, including four in a row. She is also tied for the team lead with four double-doubles. Buechler s season- and career-best in digs didn t come in a double-double performance when she had 15 versus Pacifi c... freshman Torrey Van Winden, who was injured for the fi rst two weekends of the season, made her collegiate debut last weekend. She had six kills and fi ve digs against UC Irvine (Sept. 9) and 11 kills at #15 San Diego... sophomore Zana Muno has fi ve double-fi gure digs matches, including a seasonhigh 15 against Missouri State on Sept. 2. The only contest in which she has had two errors came in a match where she also had a season-best 11 kills and a.474 hitting percentage against Missouri State... senior Jennie Frager has at least six kills in every match this season, posting career bests in kills (14) and hitting percentage (.737) against Illinois State on Aug. 27. She also has four matches with at least fi ve blocks, including a career-best 10 at LMU on Aug senior Taylor Formico has double fi gures in digs in all eight matches after posting at least 10 digs in 30 of 33 contests a year ago. Her season high is 19 at LMU... junior Ryann Chandler posted double-doubles in back-to-back matches against Pacifi c and Missouri State, including 15 digs versus MSU, which was a UCLA career high for the setter. She posted 40-plus assists in three in a row (Aug. 27-Sept. 2)... freshman Savvy Simo has at least nine digs in six of eight contests. She has a pair of 13-dig contests against Pacifi c and Hawai i (Sept. 3). FRAGER NAMED PAC-12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior Jennie Frager was named Pac-12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fi rst time in her career on Aug. 29 after helping the Bruins to a 3-0 record at the LMU Invitational. Frager had 28 kills and just one error in 48 attempts in the three victories for a.562 hitting percentage, adding 16 blocks. She set career highs in kills and hitting on Aug. 27 against Illinois State, recording 14 kills and no errors in 19 attempts for a.737 hitting percentage. It was Frager s fi rst of two error-free matches on that day, as she also tallied eight kills and no miscues in 19 swings (.421 percentage) at #21 Loyola Marymount. Along with all of her offensive plaudits, of Frager s 16 blocks, 10 came against LMU, which was a personal best. It marked the fi rst time a Bruin reached double fi gures in blocks in a match since Since 2011, when the conference started handing out Offensive, Defensive and Freshman of the Week honors, UCLA has won 10 Offensive, fi ve Defensive and four Freshman awards. BRUINS IN THE NATIONAL AND PAC-12 RANKINGS UCLA is in the Top 35 nationally in six statistical categories (through Sept. 11 matches), ranking fi fth in digs per set (18.21), 11th in opponent hitting percentage (.128), 16th in assists per set (13.43), 21st in blocks per set (2.82), 24th in kills per set (14.14) and 34th in hitting percentage (.264). Individually, senior Jennie Frager is 21st in hitting (.418) and 32nd in bps (1.39). As far as conference teams go, the Bruins are fi rst among Pac-12 foes in aps (13.43) and dps (18.21). UCLA is also second in opponent hitting (.128) and fourth in bps (2.82). Frager is fi fth in bps and tied for fi fth in hitting, while junior Reily Buechler is seventh in kps (3.61) and points per set (4.27). Junior Ryann Chandler ranks third in aps (10.00), senior Taylor Formico is fourth in dps (4.25) and senior Jordan Anderson is 10th in kps (3.37). SCOUTING THE PEPPERDINE WAVES Pepperdine is 6-3 on the season, having defeated Rhode Island, CSUN, SMU, Alabama State, Arizona State and Harvard, while falling to Lipscomb, Arizona and Long Beach State. The Waves are averaging kills, 1.22 aces, digs and 2.16 blocks per set, hitting.194 as a team. Defensively, freshman Hana Lishman is posting 4.03 dps, while freshman Jasmine Gross is tops with 1.06 bps. THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. WAVES UCLA leads the all-time series with Pepperdine The Bruins and the Waves will renew acquaintances for the fi rst time since 2012 when UCLA won at home in a sweep. The Bruins are 14-7 all-time versus Pepperdine in Malibu, but dropped the last meeting at Firestone Fieldhouse in 2011 in fi ve sets. SCOUTING THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS Long Beach State comes into Wednesday s match at 5-4, having defeated Texas Tech, California, Loyola Marymount, Duke and Pepperdine, while losing to Portland State, Colorado, Washington State and Arizona State. The 49ers are averaging kills, 1.03 aces, digs and 2.77 blocks per set, hitting.240 as a team. Senior Nele Barber leads the squad with both 3.80 kps and 3.03 dps, while junior Ashley Murray (2.34) and sophomore Peyton Grahovac (2.00) are also at 2.00 kps. Sophomore Missy Owens quarterbacks the offense and is posting aps. Freshman YiZhi Xue is tops on the squad with 1.26 bps. THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. 49ERS UCLA leads the series with Long Beach State by a tally of The Bruins have won fi ve straight, including a four-set victory at the Walter Pyramid last Sept. 18. LBSU s most recent win in the series was on Sept. 19, 2009 in Fullerton (3-0). #7 BRUINS DROP FIRST MATCH OF TO #15 USD The seventh-ranked Bruins fell for the fi rst time this season, dropping a four-set decision to #15 San Diego on Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 16-25, Senior Jordan Anderson led UCLA with 17 kills. Junior Reily Buechler had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Torrey Van Winden was also in double fi gures in kills with 11. Senior Jennie Frager tallied eight kills and a personal-best six digs, while senior Claire Felix added six kills in an error-free 17 attempts with four blocks. Defensively, senior Taylor Formico posted 15 digs, sophomore Zana Muno added 14 and freshman Savvy Simo notched 12 digs. Junior Ryann Chandler (36 assists, eight digs) and freshman Kylie Miller (13 assists, four digs) set the Bruins to a.228 hitting percentage. The Bruins trailed just once in the opening set. After UCLA scored the fi rst three points of the match, San Diego netted the next four. But an Anderson kill and a Torero attack error gave the Bruins the lead for good. At 8-7, the Bruins scored fi ve of six on two kills by Van Winden, a combo block by Chandler and Felix, a Muno ace and a USD attack error to go ahead UCLA s lead stayed between three and fi ve for the rest of the set. On the Bruins second set point, Buechler s third kill of the opener fi nished up a victory. Anderson led UCLA with four kills, while Frager and Van Winden posted three apiece. UCLA, which added three aces, out-hit San Diego.270 to.237. Formico and Simo both had four digs. The Bruins biggest lead of the second set was two points at 3-1 and 4-2. At 5-4 Bruins, San Diego scored four straight to go up 8-5. The home team wouldn t trail for the rest of the set. Down 18-14, a USD attack error and back-to-back kills by Anderson cut the defi cit to one at 18-17, but the Bruins were unable to get all square, dropping the set Anderson had six kills in the second, Van Winden added four and Buechler and Frager each posted three. Defensively, Chandler had fi ve digs, while Buechler and Formico each notched four. UCLA was out-hit.372 to.255. San Diego (5-2) led from start to fi nish in the third. The only tie was at one apiece, which was followed by six straight Torero points. At 10-3, the Bruins went on a 7-2 run to get to within a pair at Buechler had two kills and a block during the run, Van Winden recorded a kill and a solo stuff and Felix had a pair of roofs. However, the Toreros would win the fourth set to send the Bruins to their fi rst loss. Buechler had six kills, Anderson added four and Formico notched four digs. The Bruins were out-hit.390 to.353. #7 BRUINS KEEP IT GOING WITH SWEEP OF IRVINE Senior Jordan Anderson had 12 kills with a.417 hitting percentage, while junior Reily Buechler recorded 12 kills and seven digs, as the seventh-ranked Bruins improved to 7-0 for the fi rst time since 2006 with a sweep of UC Irvine on Friday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Set scores were 25-15, 25-10, The Bruins hit.368 for the match, with junior Ryann Chandler (21 assists in two sets) and freshman Kylie Miller (16 assists and six digs in two sets) splitting the setting duties. Senior Jennie Frager notched seven kills and just one error in 13 attempts (.462) with four blocks, while freshman Torrey Van Winden, in her fi rst collegiate match, posted six kills, fi ve digs and three blocks. Senior Taylor Formico had 11 digs, while sophomore Zana Muno and freshman Savvy Simo added nine apiece. The Bruins trailed just once in the opening set at 3-2, scoring seven of the next eight to eventually run away with the fi rst. During the 7-1 run, Anderson had two kills, Buechler and senior Claire Felix each posted one and UC Irvine committed three attack errors to put UCLA ahead 9-4. The Anteaters netted the next two, but a 7-2 spurt for the Bruins extended the lead to UCLA s lead didn t dip below six for the rest of the set. The fi rst and only lead of double fi gures in the opening stanza came when Buechler recorded her team-best fi fth kill to fi nish off a victory. Buechler was error-free in nine swings, Anderson added four kills and Frager posted three. The Bruins out-hit the Anteaters.448 to.139. Simo added four digs. The Bruins never trailed in winning the second set. Even at four, UCLA scored seven of eight to go ahead Anderson and Buechler each recorded two kills during the run. At 11-7, UCLA scored nine in a row to bust it open. The run began with backto-back kills by Anderson and a combo block from Frager and Chandler. Five of the next six points came on UCI attack errors, with the other coming on an Anderson/Frager roof. Leading 23-10, the Bruins scored the fi nal two of the set on a Buechler kill and an ace by freshman Jamie Robbins to give UCLA the victory. Anderson led UCLA with four kills in the second, while Buechler added three. The Bruins, who had four blocks in the set, out-hit the Anteaters.310 to Formico added fi ve digs, while Muno and Simo each had four. UCLA s only defi cits in the third were at 1-0 and 2-1, as a 5-2 run on two Buechler kills, an Anderson kill and two Irvine errors put the Bruins ahead 6-4. The Anteaters evened things at six, but a Frager kill, a Frager/Van Winden combo block and a bad set by UCI gave UCLA the lead for good at 9-6. With the score 14-12, a 6-2 Bruin run thanks to three Anderson kills, a Van Winden kill and a Van Winden/Frager roof got UCLA to 20. On the Bruins second match point, an Anteater service error closed out the victory. Buechler was error-free again with four kills in 10 attempts, as was Anderson, who had four kills in eight swings. Last season, the Bruins posted a record of 25-8 and a second-straight trip to the Regional Semifi nals of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA placed fourth in the Pac-12 Conference with a 14-6 league mark. Three Bruins were named AVCA All-Americans, tying for the most awards in a single season in school history. Taylor Formico earned Third Team honors, while Jordan Anderson and Claire Felix picked up Honorable Mention nods. All three players were also named AVCA Pacifi c South All-Region First Team, and a total of six Bruins were on the All-Pac-12 squads. Formico was the league Libero of the Year and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, Anderson was named First Team and Felix, Reily Buechler, Jennie Frager and Zana Muno each notched Honorable Mention plaudits. UCLA ranked 28th in the country in assists per set (13.22), 37th in digs per set (16.71) and 45th in kills per set (13.93). The Bruins were also second among Pac-12 teams in dps. In the summer of, Sealy was the head coach of the Pac-12 All-Star volleyball team which traveled to China in June. In 2014, the Bruins fi nished and in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 (11-9), reaching the NCAA Regional Semifi nals. Five Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams, as Karsta Lowe earned All-Pac-12, All-Region and AVCA All-America First Team accolades, while Buechler, Formico and Julie Consani were All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. UCLA led the country in kills (15.10) and assists (14.26) per set in 2014, the fi rst time the Bruins led the nation in a stat category since 1997, while Lowe was tops in the country in kills and points per set. A trio of Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams in 2013, as Lowe earned First Team to go with her AVCA All-Region First Team and All-America Honorable Mention accolades. Kelly Reeves was named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and Claire Felix was recognized on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. UCLA went 15-15, recording a 6-14 mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins were fi fth in the league in hitting percentage and kills per set and sixth in assists per set. In 2012, the Bruins posted a 23-8 record, fi nishing in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark and advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Two Bruins, Rachael Kidder and Tabi Love, were named All-American, All-Region and All-Pac-12, while Zoë Nightingale earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades. UCLA was second in the nation in kills per set (14.76) in 2012, third in assists per set (13.84) and fi fth in hitting percentage (.295), which was also the secondbest, single-season total in program history. The Bruins led all Pac-12 teams in hitting and were second in kps and aps. In 2011, Sealy led the Bruins to the program s fourth NCAA title and seventh National Championship. The Bruins posted a 30-6 record and defeated four-time defending champion Penn State, #1-overall seed Texas, Florida State and Illinois en route to the championship. Sealy was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year. The Bruins fi nished second in the Pac-12 with a 17-5 record. Six players were honored on the All-Conference teams, while Kidder, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, was a First Team All-American and All-Region selection. UCLA fi nished fi fth in the nation in assists per set (13.71) and eighth in kills per set (14.52). Among Pac-12 teams, the Bruins ranked fi rst in aps, second in kps and opponent hitting percentage (.160) and third in digs per set (15.95). In his fi rst campaign, Sealy guided the Bruins to a 22-9 record, a fourth-place fi nish in the Pacifi c-10 Conference (11-7) and a Second Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Three Bruins were named to the All-Pac-10 team in 2010, Dicey McGraw (First Team), Lainey Gera (Honorable Mention) and Kidder (Honorable Mention), while McGraw also earned AVCA All-Pacifi c Region Honorable Mention accolades, UCLA fi nished in the top half of the Pac-10 in digs (2nd, 15.41), assists (4th, 13.46), kills (4th, 14.26) and aces (5th, 1.20) per set along with opponent hitting percentage (4th,.187). Sealy spent part of the summer of 2012 in London at the Olympic Games, serving as a scout coach for the U.S. men s volleyball team. UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced on Feb. 10, 2010 the hiring of Sealy as head coach of the Bruin women s volleyball program. Sealy returned to his alma mater after spending four seasons ( ) as an associate head coach at the University of Hawai i. He was a three-time All-American and an assistant coach for four years with the UCLA men s volleyball team and was an assistant with the Bruin women s volleyball program in We are excited to welcome back Michael Sealy to lead the women s volleyball program, Guerrero said. Michael clearly possesses the necessary credentials to allow UCLA to compete at the highest level. He is well-respected in the volleyball community and has an enthusiastic and passionate approach towards the game. Sealy helped Hawai i to a berth in the National Semifi nals in The Rainbow Wahine recorded their second-straight, 30-win season last year, going 32-3 overall. They also posted a 16-0 mark in conference play to earn their 14th-straight Western Athletic Conference title and went on to claim their 10th-consecutive WAC Tournament championship. Sealy s record during his tenure at Hawai i was (.862 winning percentage). Prior to his stint at Hawai i, Sealy coached for four seasons at UCLA, where he was an assistant on the men s side from and an assistant for the women s volleyball team in In his lone season on the women s side, the Bruins posted a record and advanced to the Regional Semifi nals. With the UCLA men, Sealy was (.705) during his four campaigns, helping the Bruins to an NCAA Championship in 2006 and an NCAA Runner-Up fi nish in Sealy was also a volunteer assistant with the CSUN men s volleyball team in 2000 before working in the same capacity with the UCLA men in One of the top setters in UCLA history, Sealy was a four-year letterwinner with the Bruins from and ranks fourth in Bruin annals in assists (4,749). In his senior season, Sealy and the Bruins won the program s 14th National Championship, going The team captain was named the co-most Outstanding Player of the 1993 NCAA Tournament and also earned ASICS/Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year and AVCA All-American fi rst-team honors. In addition, Sealy was named an All-American in 1991 (fi rst-team) and 1992 (third-team), as well as All-Conference three times. The Bruins won three conference titles during Sealy s playing days, going (.769) during his four years. Following his playing career in Westwood, Sealy went on to play professionally in Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Puerto Rico. He also played with the U.S. National Team in 1994 and Sealy graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a degree in physiological science.
